Well, Faheem's!. We've all heard about it and you might be thinking about eating here. I did, for the first time for lunch on Saturday 26 July. I'm from Canberra and had heard about this place from the SMH and, of course, this site.
I was just about the only bloke in the place for a late lunch. The chicken vindaloo I chose was okay, but certainly not brilliant (or spicy for that matter), and it could have been a lot hotter in temperature. The Kashmiri naan was wonderful and I quite enjoyed it. Masala chai was just okay.
The young bloke at the front was friendly and welcoming so all this talk about surly staff is just not true. Actually I came armed with a clipping from the SMH and showed it to the young bloke who took it into the kitchen to presumably show the chefs. He brought it back and politely returned it, but I gave it to him. My reward was a free cup of masala chai.
This little place was okay, but just okay and I don't feel it really merits all the praise it has been given. But it's friendly and is fine for a quick lunch. Don't forget to grab your own lassi from the fridge.
If a naan is fluffy - it has gone wrong/ has got something in it that shouldn't be there/has been created for westerners. Place has no ambience/no service,
typical Indian food that you get in the west - 'throw in as many spices as you can - make sure you don't get the actual taste of whatever is in there - meat or vegies are burried deep in there somewhere, you can hardly make out what they are.
I have heard so many people rave about this place, I had to give it a go. White tiled walls and floor, reminded me more of a restroom than a restaurant.
Asked for an extra plate, the guy picked up a plate, wiped off whatever was on it with his BARE PALM, and proceeded to hand me a plate. The curries were bordering on mediocre, and the fried fish everyone was so impressed by did not live up to the hype by half.
Yes it's cheap, and for some this might really be all they need. If you want good food in a clean restaurant do not go here. If all you're after is a cheap eat after a big night out, then this might be the place for you, just remember NO DRINKS ALLOWED!
And for heavens sake do not go here on a first date... unless you really want to get rid of her quick.
Yum. Perfect fluffy naan... Tandoori that tastes like Tandoori should. Superb lamb and okra. OK, the lamb briyani was stock standard but still good. Going to visit again.
If you are a 5-star person, don't go there as the ambience is a bit low, but if you really are after excellent Indian/Paki food and a brilliant service, this is the place to go. Best value for money. One of the very few really delicious Indian/Paki restaurants in Sydney. (North Indians beware. Thankfully NOT the usual North Indian taste that you get in most other Indian restaurants around Sydney).
Single fella, experienced in Indian foods (often eats out in Harris Park and Surry Hills, also lots of travel to Malaysia and Singapore due to family ties). After reading the comments on here and hearing about Faheem's through a work colleague, thought I'd give it a go.
Beef Nihari - $12.00 - Received a bowl of oily curry sauce, 1 x wedge of lime, myriad slices of fresh cut chilli, and 3 x pieces of tough beef approximately 3cm x 4cm in size. Now yesterday when I went to the butcher at Eastlakes, diced yearling beef was $7.99/kg. Lots of profit in this dish I reckon!
Naan - $1.50 each - very nice and fluffy. Good for soaking up expensive curry sauce! Lamb Biryani - $11.00 - takeaway....taste test ok. Better value elsewhere.
I don't know what the fuss is about this place. From my personal experience, I honestly can't rate it as worth a return visit. Way overpriced and nothing spectacular regarding flavours. Not worth the effort if you're driving to Enmore just to try it out. You're better off saving your money or spending less at the local North Indian Diner.
I love the shami kebabs, the beef nihari and basically everything that I've ever ordered from here has been a taste sensation.
Update May 2008: Had a belated Mother's day lunch here with the family on Sunday and it was terrific. Service was fast and friendly. The food was sensational and what we all really loved about it is that it tasted so fresh!! We had tandoori chicken, shami and sheek kebabs, lamb biryani, dahl, palak paneer and garlic naans. We ate every single delicious morsel and we were all groaning with the weight of our full bellies - $100 for 5 people is very good value. Keep up the good work fellas!!
Been there few times but the quality varies. Sometimes good food but last time, it was too oily and taste less, tandoori chicken tikka was not cooked well.
We visited from Melbourne and tried Fahim's Fastfood. The lamb biryani was authentic and very tasty, Tandoori fish and Naan an excellent choice. Tandoori chicken was not too dry and karahi lamb was prepared very well. Highly recommended...
Food is cheap but restaurant is not too clean. Too spicy food, I not like only naan bread is good for me. This is the only place I don't come again to. No wine or beer here, also they say not bring your own.
