Overview
Emmilou is a Modern European/ Melbourne Style Tapas Bar & Cocktail Lounge.
We offer the food and service of a fine dining restaurant however in a relaxed and funky bar setting with wonderful cocktails, wine and tapas. Very Melbourne/ Barcelona....
I had been to Emmilou a few times previously, and liked what I remembered, so went back for dinner. I was not disappointed in the slightest. The service was wonderful, especially considering I had changed my booking about 3 times, once on the day! All the staff were really friendly and accommodating.
We loved the look of the place, really cool, with fantastic music playing all night. A really good mix of tunes! My partner and I had the veggie degustation with cocktails, and it was fantastic. We are normally v. carnivorous but my partners enviro company was challenging the employees to go veg for a month, and with food like this I'd be happy to do so every night of the week!
Highlights included the capsicum stuffed with goats cheese, these incredible almonds in some sort of sweet sauce, and the amazing polenta with mushroom foam which will be hard to forget. The delicious gingerbread with coffee ice cream was a great way to end, especially if you have a raging sweet tooth like my boyfriend! My favourite cocktails were the vote for pedro and the port and brandy fizz, and my partner loved the mai tai.
Given the price we won't be back every night, but for a special occasion it was wonderful. Definitely recommended if you want a wonderful, memorable dining experience.
I loved the yummy chorizo with mussels and octopus, give me more! The food wasn't what I expected, not your 'normal' tapas, but everything was really nice!
Cocktails too! Really cool funky space, the unisex toilets were a bit strange I thought.
Love the very late opening hours too. Likelihood to return: 100%. Exceptional value for money (if you can restrain yourself from trying everything on the menu that is), including too many yummy cocktails!
Emmilou's food was a bit disappointing. We tried about 7 things from the menu and none of them really excited. My boyfriend who'd been here previously on two occasions thought the quality had very much dwindled and was really disappointed with it. Even with the extensive cocktail menu, it's quite forgettable.
I was really looking forward to the food I read about in these reviews. However, I only have luke warm feelings about the food, maybe because I was expecting something out of this world. The complimentary amous bouche was very good.
The salted cod was certainly salted. The accompanying few crisp garlic bread were not seasoned and the sauces weren't either but they hardly counter acted the shear amount of saltiness of the dish. Maybe because of this, I didn't really enjoy the (expected salty) chorizo, mussel and squid dish. I was so parched for the rest of the night and downed so many glasses of water at my next destination.
"The place is really funky" was my first thought when I walked in. It had a retro club vibe with cool music from everything from Old Blue Eyes classics to house-funk. The staff were really friendly, gave us choice and time. They were helpful, warm and professional.
I'm simply amazed by this place! The food is the best I've tasted in Sydney ever. I had the duck liver parfait, if I didn't care about eating a balanced diet, I could eat that stuff by the truckload. Also the braised beef cheek! An explosion of amazing taste!
With the bill that came at the end, I couldn't go every day, but I will certainly be saving for another visit. Cocktails were wonderful too and the service, fantastic. Our waitress was lovely. Go!
Chris Cranswick-Smith. Now that's a guy I'd like to meet, he's a culinary genius!
I was casually going about my daily business at work yesterday, when I received a text from my boyfriend. "Happy Anniversary". I'd completely forgotten and so a frantic internet search ensued. I stumbled upon Emmilou which I'd never heard of before, checked out the website, liked what I saw, and booked.
We got there at about 8 pm, the front heated terraced area looked cosy and inviting, the dim lighting gave a romantic and intimate feel. I automatically congratulated myself on a chance star find! We ordered 5 tapas dishes between the two of us, two off the smaller menu and 3 off the main. Wow. Salt cod to die for, capsicum with goats curd and almonds in truffle honey (as I said, this man is a genius), blackened salmon in oyster sauce, duck parfait with crispy betroot (OMG that was good), and pork cheek with chickpeas in a caramelised onion and tomato sauce.
It was truly mouth watering and by far the best dining experience I've had, probably ever. It was perfect. What really stumps me, is the fact that the Sydney Good Food Guide rates this as a 12.5 out of 20, yet rates other far inferior restaurants as 17 or 18 adorned with chef hats? It's truly crazy.
If you want top notch food, cracking cocktails but in a warm and inviting setting, then you really mustn't look beyond Emmilou. It's absolutely by far my new favourite, and I just can't wait to go back.
I had a small gathering of 12 people back in December and I've been meaning to rate this place since then. The service was excellent - the food was great and we generally had a very enjoyable night. It was reasonably priced for a night of nibbles and drinks. Will definitely return.
We went there last month on a Friday for degustation, $65 per person. The food was nice and elegantly decorated in small white plate. It was not what I thought about Spanish Tapas, I am thinking of the little clay pot dish with a lot of sauce to go with bread. Cause I tried one in Crows Nest, the garlic prawn tapas really tasted strong, nice and satisfying.
So it is totally different modern style tapas here. Service is good, ambience is good. A little bit pricey probably because of the food presentation and the name. Maybe we should have ordered 1 or 2 tapas with other dish instead of the degustation, cause hubby kept saying he was still hungry.
I really love tapas, but this one is just 11 plus. The ambience had a great, pleasant vibe that matches for my partner and me. We enjoyed the cocktails which made us go back for thirds. We will back very soon.
