Overview of Emmilou- Lounge & Tapas Bar
Since opening in 2007, Emmilou has earned a reputation for exceptional tapas and cocktails, wonderful music and a distinctly European atmosphere.
Emmilou is a unique modern European/ Melbourne style tapas bar and cocktail lounge in the heart of Surry Hills.
With a en equal focus on wine, cocktails, music and creating an over all dining experience as well as of course the innovative, attractive, sexy and sulty modern Spanish tapas, it is no wonder Emmilou is one of the hottest little spots in Sydney at the moment.
From house cured wild boar to wagyu beef brisket with salsa verde and almond cream and not to forget dazzling desserts such as their signature lime cheese cake with tequila the food at Surry Hills favourite tapas bar is just divine!
Oh and a little bonus is that the whole thing is run by celebrity chef Chris Cranswick-Smith from Ready Steady Cook. You'll find him running around chatting to guests and monitoring the tone and ambience of the whole place on a nightly basis. He's a very friendly guy and he won't bite.....unless he's hungry ;-)
Last night had dinner at Emmilou. Service was outstanding, attentive and informative. Chef Chris had a shot of Tequila with us, loved that! Food absolutely delicious. All in our party serious foodies and we all loved the flavours and the freshness. What a treat. Will definitely go back. ps. Music sensational!
Finally made it to this place after walking by it for years. I am sorry I did, we popped in on a Friday night and asked if they could squeeze 3 in, the maitre d' had a hard look around (it was already 9 pm and the place was half empty) and said yes we can squeeze you in.
The wine list was terribly over priced with no real value, we ordered from the menu, oysters first and they were the most embarrassing things I have ever seen on a plate, tiny poor things on a huge bed of ice, it was almost laughable, it didn't get much better. The food was average, very forgettable, 3 people two jugs of average sangria $240 and no we did not leave a tip.
Oh and it was still half empty when we left but my physios was off there last friday I will be curious to see what they think.
We went here for a quiet and found Emmilou to be a great modern tapas bar with some fantastic cocktails. We ordered some sangria and finger food, of which the Duck parfait was absolutely scrumptious, very light and airy. The seared scallop concha was also a delectable morsel.
The main tapas dishes were also really good, with highlights being the Brisket (which we were served because they ran out of the goat sausage). Portion sizes were good for tapas plates and the combination of flavours and the presentation were both superb. For the both of us we ordered 3 plates (plus the finger foods) and this was more than enough for both of us to walk out with a full belly.
The prices of the dishes reflect the quality of the food and ingredients, and we found these to be fair, however, for a good meal a person would expect to pay $50-70 per head and as such, means this place is generally a place to go for a fancier dinner on the weekend. The weeknight we were there, Emmilou was really quiet, but it worked out for us because food came quickly and the service was great.
The only downside was maybe the food that came out wasn't piping hot, but rather luke warm, it didn't really bother us though. Overall the food was great and the menu options were good for all tastes. I would thoroughly recommend Emmilou, and am sure to revisit to try more of the tapas plates in the near future.
I love this place, the vibe is exactly what a lot of places lack these days, and the food is amazing.
On a recent Saturday night, five girlfriends and I were struggling to find somewhere to eat, everywhere had a huge wait list. I'd been to Emmilou on a number of occasions and have always had a great experience, so I suggested it. Without a booking we tried our luck. Upon arrival, the place was full but the staff showed us to the bar whilst they could see what they could do and suggested a number of amazing cocktails.
We were pleasantly surprised when shown to our table soon after. Big fans of sharing food, and trying everything plus we had a vegetarian in the mix, we ordered a number of tapas to share. We weren't disappointed, the goat sausage, duck liver parfait and pork belly were definitely crowd pleasers. Not to mention the lime cheesecake with tequila, amazing.
We stayed on a for a while after dinner for some more cocktails, chatted with the friendly staff and other guests at the bar, the vibe really permits for this. All in all another great night at Emmilou. We will definitely be back.
What a shocking evening. We went to Emmilou for a friend's birthday and had booked a table as we were such a large group. Firstly they couldn't put us on one table as promised. Once we complained, we were told to wait for another party to finish their meal so we could take their spot. This meant they were rushed to finish their meal as we hung around waiting.
Once we were seated, we were treated with condescension and generally icy service. The senior staff were rude and did not bother with our table at all. Considering the run around we received when we first arrived, there was no attempt to improve the evening through the service. It was actually quite appalling.
As for the food, our entire table was disbelieving at what was served. We kept waiting and waiting, thinking more would be coming, but it never did! Thing is, the food itself was bland and unsatisfying. It was ridiculously overpriced for what it was.
Overall, we left with empty tummies, empty wallets and cranky dispositions. Definitely will not be returning here, as there are many other restaurants in Sydney far better.
I agree with below, best to go when you're not hungry. 4 people cost $300 but was still hungry so we left and went had some takeaway from down the road and then went to a cafe and had coffee and dessert (have never done that after a meal). The prawn skewer ($5) was one small prawn on a tooth pick.
Food was good but serves were too small. Menu was small so we feel we tried everything we wanted and only reordered one dish. Also very cold and had to leave jackets and scarfs on for enitre meal.
Response from Management:
Hi Saraa
Thanks very much for the feedback, we take all of customers comments seriously. We have adjusted MANY of our portion sizes and costs in light of two such reviews so as to offer better value to our customers.
The offending prawn dish has been replaced by our signature Scallop Ceviche with Toasted Corn Salsa dish at just $3. We are also proud to offer some fantastic deals including $10 cocktails nightly until 7pm, $15 Sangria jugs every Thursday night and group booking menu's starting at $45per person.
Four of us arrived for lunch last Saturday, 29 May. It was a celebration for my mother's birthday. We knew of the chef through Ready Steady Cook, but did not expect that he would be there. Chris is such a lovely guy. He was very attentive and chatty without being invasive. The menu is lovely and the suggested portions (1.5 - 2 per person) was on the money. It was great value and tasted wonderful. We would not hesitate to dine there again.
This place is best to go when you're not hungry. The food is mediocre compared to other Sydney restaurants and definitely isn't value for money. Drinks are also super expensive. I left poor and hungry.
My partner and I have eaten here a number of times and love the fact we are always remembered and shown to our usual table. The goat sausage and brisket are our favourite dishes but saying that we've tried majority of the dishes and have never failed to be impressed.
Our only disappointment is that the the degustation menu is very similar to the main menu as it would be nice to try some new dishes. We will, however, keep returning as we always enjoy ourselves.
I went to Emmilou with a group of 8 so we got to sample a lot of dishes and all of them were fantastic. My particular favourites were the Seared Scallops, Serrano Ham with Sourdough, Crispy Calamari and special mention must go to the Goat sausage. Oh and the olives were so tender and juicy. Yum, I'm getting hungry just thinking about it!
Chris, the owner, was a great guy and made us feel really welcome. The service from the staff was efficient and they were all knowledegeable about the dishes. The choice of music there was top notch, the tunes that were playing had just enough energy to create a cool vibe but not too over the top that you couldn't hold a conversation.
I was a big fan of the cocktail menu, in particular the Rum and Raisin. The jugs of Sangria were also a crowd pleaser with our table. It was a pity that we were too full to try the desserts! Will have to try to save some room next time. Emmilou definitely gets the tick of approval from me and I'll be back for sure.
