I went to this restaurant for my daugther's 3rd b'day, so 13 people came and I had pre-booked the tables. I ordered the seafood tapas platter, which was great and tasty. I also ordered the Paella, the seafood in the Paella was fresh and cooked well, although the rice in the paella was quite bland, but it was still edible.
The negative thing I only had to say about this restaurant was it was under staff with only 3 waiters waiting on about 50 -60 people, so not very organised or professional but as for value wise, it was great the price was not too expensive and the food was great and pleasing!!
Went here to share tapas and paella... was really looking forward to tasting their chorizo but they were all out, strange for a Spanish restaurant. The jamon was great, as were the artichokes and the tortilla. The paella was average and there were loads of mussels. Not many prawns, fatty chicken full of bones, a heap of calamari and a crab on top.
Highlight of the night was the sangria! There was only one waiter working on this very quiet night, however, we had to wait a long time for plates to be cleared. He was as cold and personable as a wet fish. The decor was dated and the female toilets were hideous, reeked of sewerage and mould. Will not be back.
Have eaten here many times and the only thing that lets the place down is the ambience. It's a little too dark and can get too hot at times. They sometimes have a guitarist or Flamenco dancers but on the amateur side. The food however is great Spanish fare and the staff are friendly and helpful. The seafood and chicken Paella is delicious, great value for money and the best I have had outside of Spain (they also have a vegetarian version).
The tapas are tasty, with the patatas bravas a family favourite (potatoes cooked in a spicy tomato based sauce - best eaten with the complimentary crusty bread rolls). I have taken different groups of friends there and we have always had a great time due to the food, the service and the value for money so they are forgiven the ambience.
We had dinner at El Porron, the food was not fantastic but it was other incidents that concerned us. We received the bill which was 200, there were 4 of us, our friend used his credit card. When the docket came back it was 300.
We spoke to the staff who basically said let her be the judge of that like we were trying to not pay our bill. Once this was sorted out (the bill was 200). We had a bottle of wine in the fridge unopened, my husband asked the staff for it when we were leaving, she pulled the bottle out, they had been serving our wine to customers !!!!
We have eaten in thousands of restaurants in Sydney and this has never happened.
We live around the corner and had always seen this place, but never ventured inside. So we booked a table for 8.15 and had a go.
El Porron isn't strictly Tapas restaurant as they do a lot of mains too. The variety of tapas dishes number about 10 and no meatballs! The food we had (Whitebait, Eggs w/ tomato, sausage & Capsicum, garlic prawns, tortilla and bravas) was good though. The Eggs were the highlight.
This is a family run place and the feel and service was good - friendly and prompt. All in all we BYOd and it was reasonable ($70).
Decor's not much to shout about - it does however answer the age old question of who buys those heavy iron chandeliers from electrical stores... When you go you'll see what I mean.
Overall, I think the lack of variety of tapas was a little disappointing, but what was on the menu was well done.
This has a lovely local family-run restaurant feel to it and the food is very good, but not outstanding. The tapas platter is brilliant and you should definitely order it! The tomato bread is really good too. The paella was good but a little on the bland side. Overall a nice place to try out.
A very good Spanish restaurant. The food is excellent, the service is fast and the staff friendly. The entree was a mix of ham and other cold meats, that were surprisingly delicious and we try the "tapas" without hesitation. I particularly enjoy getting early, at 6:30 pm, and having the entire place for us. Around 1 hr later they started to play some nice music.
El Porron is the type of place you go to for the food and the food alone. The food is delicious. And we're so pleased there's a Spanish place a 3 minute walk from home.
Ambience here is pretty sad. Mind you, we didn't dine late enough to enjoy any live music that we saw advertised, but we did dine early enough to not enjoy mismatched furniture with the paint peeling and harsh lighting and a horrid smell emanating from the ladies. It almost put me off my food but not quite.
Delicious garlic/chilli prawn entrees - hard to miss with that one I guess, but the traditional dish with the egg, chorizo and vegetables in the Spanish salsa type sauce was so moorish, we could have just had three of those and been happy. But we tried a few more dishes. My veal in cream with mushroom was not traditionally Spanish but delicious nonetheless and my hubby's beef beautifully cooked and thoroughly tasty too.
Though we'd brought our own we decided at the last minute (and noticed the raised eyebrows from the waitstaff) to order a half litre of the house sangria. Was more cordial in taste, definitely a mix of tequilla and perhaps a strawberry liquor. Too potent, too much like an RSL attempt to make a sangria right down to just dropping bits of fruit in before you serve. So disappointing. Keep it simple people, the traditional way is best.
Great value in all too, we used our entertainment card which was welcome. Disappointing sangria and ambience aside, we'll be back, though perhaps we'll not be so well dressed next time, and perhaps we'll bring our daughter, it's family friendly and not too pretentious and when you're serving as tasty food as this those sorts of things are forgiven.
