The food was wonderful, I don't like eating red meat but the marinated lamb was so tender I ate all of it. Also the waiter was happy to give us a 1.5 serving because we weren't sure if we could finish two servings which was perfect.
I have always ducked in for a quick coffee and Turkish delight, and a salad here and there. Finally took the plunge and had brekkie here and what a good surprise. I had the Lebanese platter which is not only fresh and abundant, but value for money. They have really improved from a dingy little place. Well done guys. definitely worth a return trip!
I had the mixed plate here, eating in places like punchbowl, where it’s cheap and nice, it’s hard for me to eat something which is almost the same but costs almost double the price!! There is nothing wrong with their mixed plate, I loved the fried broccoli (or was it another veggie) but overall, I would stick eating in the west where its taste a little better and cost less.
This may not be the hippest looking cafe in Newtown, but hip looking joints come and go all to frequently. El Bahsa may not please the Uber style chasers, however, if you are after consistently tasty and good value meals you can't go wrong here. I cannot comment on the platters but I can say the breakfasts are fantastic (try the omelettes!) as is the coffee, the service is warm and prompt. In general this is an honest family run cafe that will be around for a long time to come.
Just walk away from this place. I am quite surprised at some of the complimentary reviews here, as we had an awful meal at El Bahsa. In summary, our main grievances were:
1. Portions were meagre. We ordered the Lebanese platter for two, and were served what could only be described as an entree. Barely enough for one hungry soul, let alone two.
2. Far too much salt. Everything from the eggplant, to the humous and the chicken were drenched in salt. We had to drink gallons of water afterwards...
3. Poor value. For what we were given this was poor. $30 for a couple of tiny scraps of chicken, lamb and a few bits of parsley, eggplant thrown in.
4. Service - very mediocre.
If you are looking for a quick snack when nothing else is open after a long drinking session, then this may suffice. Otherwise, get a better bite for your buck elsewhere.
The entertainment sure was interesting, Belly dancing and all... However the food, while not being unpleasant.. was rather bland... But it was only one dish out of many, perhaps i chose an uninteresting one... Overall, pretty fair.
The food is decent if your not looking for anything too spectacular, the service is good and they always have a free table. The coffees are sour and quite poor I have given them three chances to get their coffees right.
Have been coming to El Basha for close to twenty years. Decor has changed many times but style remains honest good food. I always have the Lebanese plate and make great coffee too.
I hadn't been here in over a year until last week, I used to be a regular. The food is still fantastic and portions are quite generous. I still preferred the setup before the renovation as I feel they made it look cheap. Only and first problem I had on this visit was that the service was terribly slow for a wednesday night.
