Overview
Efendy (effendi) literally means "Gentleman" in old Turkish. It is commonly used to describe people with traditional upbringing adopting modern views. No other name represents our style of cuisine better. Traditional Turkish recipes - accumulated from many cultures over the least five centuries - with a modern adaptation, using best of Sydney's produce.
Our style is also reflected in modern design and fitout in a traditional, old Victorian Mansion housing a leafy courtyard, main dining room, cozy Mey bar and function rooms.
You can enjoy cocktails with an oriental touch, aperitifs, digestives, cigars at the courtyard or on the balcony and variety of boutique European and Australian wines by the glass before or after your dinner in Mey bar.
Providing elegant rooms and surrounds for a Wedding, Birthday or other Special Occasions, Efendy is able to tailor a dining and venue experience to suit you.
We welcome business and corporate groups who wish to conduct functions in a private room. A menu can be designed to cater for individual group
This place started becoming my regular diner venue. I can give 10/10 for their mezes. Zucchini puffs and broad bean purees are hits! Fantastic service, and special mention to those Turkish delights that is served with your coffee, yummmmy! Highly recommend it.
My wife & I have been eager to try Efendy for some time, we finally got round to it recently when we went out for dinner with friends on a Sat night. The service upon arrival was very good, and the ambience of the restaurant is very inviting.
The meze entree list had some very appealing options and we weren't disappointed - superb, cooked to perfection especially the gozleme and zuchini entree. The only blips on our night was that our mains came out instantly after our table had been cleared after we finished entree, and the wait staff forgot our side dishes, but they apologise and were very good at turning the situation around - all-in-all.
I can't fault the service, and value for money is good based on the high quality. Mains were great and the selection of desserts also very impressive. My wife and I will definitely be back - a great night out at Efendy!
If this is what Istanbul cuisine is about I am moving there. Best food I had in Balmain for years and at a better price than places half as comfortable and half as hospitable.
Their meze plate is the best deal around at $15 for so many different varieties to choose from, you can fill yourself with mezes but that would be a great shame since their mains particularly beef cheeks on smoked eggplant puree is simply divine.
Service is very courteous and knowledgeable, our waiter patiently explained each meze that was offered that night, I will be back and this time without having any lunch to stuff myself on this indulgence.
Update: Still as good as previous experience only much cheaper hence the higher value rating. Went there on a Thursday night, pretty full probably due to the $42 meze and mains deal, if you thought mezes were can dips with two days old Lebanese bread try this and you'll know the difference.
Previous Review: If you ever wondered what happened to good, old genuine service that you felt cared and welcomed this is the place to go. Went there on a Tuesday, was surprisingly busy. It has a great ambience set in an old mansion.
The food and flavours are so different than the bandwagon restaurants of Sydney worrying so much about impressing the critics they forgot it is the creativity and variety that makes the food unique. It is refreshing to visit a restaurant that is not scared to be different. To start with there are no entrees just a meze journey that changes daily we have been told. You can choose six items from the daily variety and they land on your table by very informative wait staff and it is only $15 per person.
They have a small list of mains. I tried the confit of duck with Cheese baklava and it was divine. Partner had the vegetarian kofte, crunchy coating, eggplant and garlic yoghurt all blend very pleasantly. I think this restaurant will be one of the highlights of the year and won't be surprised if they get a hat. I certainly hope it does not give them the curse of the hat as did to many fine establishments in the past.
Oohh la la laaa. To a delicious Father's Day feast at Efendy. I consider it one of the best restaurants I have been in the city. Great combination of food, service and the whole ambience. (even with your 2 month old crying baby).
This place has a lot of potential, the building and decorative scheme are lovely and the food was not bad. However the service was haphazard and the staff were over worked and obviously inexperienced.
We waited way too long for our first drinks and were constantly interupted by several waiters asking us the same thing. When we asked the waiter some questions about the wine menu, it was embarrassingly obvious that he did not have a clue as he tried to arrogantly bluff his way through. All in all, I must say a bit of a let down.
It’s a great find both for Balmain and for Turkish cuisine. I never thought Turkish food would be this interesting, it definitely has a good blend of modern and traditional aspects and the service is up there with best restaurants in Sydney, very professional and informative, and not stuck-up at all like some fine dining experiences.
The beef cheek main was nice but the others were just okay (duck and lamb shank), we also ordered two desserts and while the chocolate baklava was different, it was nothing spectacular. Main portions are pretty small so make sure you order bread or starters. We used the entertainment card so value was good but probably would try other turkish restaurants in Sydney.
Our experience at Efendy was fairly average. The restaurant itself is breezy, spacious and nicely renovated. Service was reasonable. One of the waitresses hardly spoke and never smiled, but managed a joke towards the end of the meal so maybe she just got out of the wrong side of the bed that morning. Still ... Please don't bring your attitude to work. Your customers notice.
While I won't pretend I'm an expert on Turkish food, the food was mostly good. The various dips and cold appetizers on the meze plate were all fabulous. We weren't too into the lamb kofte as we found the very mutton-y flavour overwhelmingly strong (and this is coming from a guy who gets into his offal and game). Other mains were pleasant enough, though some portions were very small such as the stewed beef cheek. Desserts were very unusual and mostly delicious, special mention of course going to the chocolate baklava.
I think I need another visit to distill my opinion of Efendy, as currently it's not a place I'm particularly itching to come back to. I'd love to try their breakfast sometime though.
