My boyfriend and I had dinner at Echoes and it was the best dining experience we have ever have. The night before we had dinner at a 5 star restaurant next door and it was nothing compared to Echoes.
The view that Echoes has is amazing. The food was delightful, well seasoned, well cooked, well presented and the menu had something for everyone. But what really made our night so fantastic was the staff and their service. They were so friendly and helpful and explained the menu so well. I will be recommending Echoes to all my family and friends.
We booked for lunch at 12 pm on Valentines Day and requested a window seat on the balcony. We figured that by booking for 12 noon we would have a good chance of success for this. When we arrived there was only one other couple seated and they were in the centre. There are seven tables around the windows and all were empty. After studying the booking list (which I could see had few bookings and was largely an empty page) the young waitress showed us to the back centre table.
When I mentioned we would like one of the spare window tables she was full of excuses, left me standing and eventually came back and showed us to one of the excellent empty tables. What was the point of putting in a request? We were there for two hours and interestingly some of the other window tables were never used.
Strange because we were well groomed, well dressed and polite (it intrigues me who would be thought as appropriate for priority). The complimentary sparkling wine that everyone was given was very nice. My lobster and prawn crepe was excellent. My husband opted for the rabbit and mushroom pie which had enjoyed last time and he was not disappointed. One of the waiters tried to take my plate, unfortunately, before I was finished. He did not know that if you leave your knife and fork angled together when there is still food on your plate then you are not finished.
However, the food saved the day as my passionfruit soufflé was superb and my husband was delighted with his Crème Brulèe. It is a pity that some the young staff let Echoes down, because the food is wonderful and in this type of establishment it was ridiculous for a booking at 12 noon not to place respectable patrons at a suitable table when requested, especially (at these prices) when there were so few bookings, and please don’t take my plate away until I am finished!
I have been to a number of Sydney's finest restaurants and still find myself returning to Echoes at least once a year. The restaurant never ceases to impress me.
Some of the best meals I have ever eaten have been from Echoes. The food always has great flavour, is always cooked perfectly and there is really something for everyone in most of the menu. Portions are generous too, and if you like eating your three courses you can expect to leave with a full stomach.
The waiting staff are always gracious and attentive and nothing is too much trouble.
Guests I have taken there time and time again are always thoroughly impressed, with all of them saying it was the best meal they had ever had. There were more photos taken of the food than the people that day. The venue itself is fantastic, a very impressive dining room with a stunning terrace with spectacular views. The fire in the bar area is certainly coveted in the cold, wintery months, and no doubtedly sets the atmosphere even more.
Try it, it's worth the drive and you shouldn't be disappointed.
We tried this restaurant recently when staying in Katoomba. We were blown away by the view at first, and the people were very nice. The entrees were lovely, but then things started to slide.
We waited and waited for our mains and watched the people around us being served. Those who arrived half an hour after us were served before us.
We asked about our mains and were told, "Oh sorry, there has been some confusion," which I guess means that they lost our order. So we'd finished the bottle of wine before our mains arrived, which we pointed out and they ignored.
The food here is very good. However the price is high and, given the status of this restaurant, we would expect them to make some gesture when they'd clearly made a mistake. Unfortunately we won't eat here again nor will we recommend it to friends and associates visiting the Blue Mountains.
Went for Sunday lunch with the family. Lucky to get table looking at the mountains. Food very good. Pleasure to be served by a nice bunch of people. Will be back. Worth a try, you won't be disappointed. And it was worth the drive from Sydney.
I had the souffle tartlet for entree, quite salty that diminished all the other flavours of this dish but this was not as disappointing as the main of slow braised pork belly.
The meat look liked it had been quickly cooked, was full of that white yukky fat just below the rind that I had to scrape off, very tasteless and very disappointing.
The only saving grace was dessert, the creme brulee which was quite good.
In all, its a couple of hours that I will never get back and I was better off going to the local take away restaurant. Went to somewhere else the next night, now that was an impeccable dining experience.
We should have checked the reviews here before booking, while the staff are friendly (but stressed out) the food and the value really lets Echoes down.
The lobster+prawn entrée just simply doesn't work, the fish main (Swordfish) was entirely over cooked and my rare steak was ice cold pretty much all the way through (sent back they appear to be able to cope with medium, essentially ruining a good eye fillet). The portion size was small, and sides were a considerable price extra (potato salad for $13.50!).
We really weren't concerned with how much the night was going to cost, but we get very angry when a restaurant which claims good food turns out to be such a rip off. Our plan was 3 courses but after the catastrophe of the first two decided against dessert (back to our apartment via the bottle shop for a wonderful Kalleske Shiraz Vintage Port).
The staff were apologetic and polite. The piano bar with live music is a nice touch (more jazz, less Pachalbel canon variations pls), they need some music over the howl of the wind outside.
It was clear that they were having a stressful night between a party in another room, smokers constantly trying to escape into the hurricane winds on the balcony (I was expecting the glass door to smash every time it slammed shut) and the stuff ups from the kitchen.
I can't imagine this place getting any of the above right without the replacement of the kitchen staff, who's best talent is writing a menu which sounds fantastic but which the kitchen fails to execute.
Chef made a mistake putting too much salt in the lobster dish which my friend ordered for the entree. It was extremely salty that she couldn't eat. I thought my friend was over reacting, I tried and realised that my friend was totally right, was just extremely salty. We complained to the waitress and returned the dish.
Waitress came back saying chef also acknowledged that they made a mistake. They brought the same entree in 10 minutes, tasted nice but it made us wonder why they couldn't get it right before? My main dish, blue eye cod was dry and I thought it was over cooked. On top of that Asian rice noodle in the salad (comes with fish) wasn't cooked at all.
Tasted like they just soaked the dry noodles in the hot water. Paying $75.00 for 2 course meal, you would expect that food is all delicious but it wasn't like that at all. I was very disappointed.
The view is what you paying for and I understand there is a price to it but $ 90 for 3 averages course. Service was very disappointed as very young student looking like were looking after us, they didn't know much of what was going on and couldn't give us answer to our question, meal were ok but very old fashioned, I ate in two or one (sometime 3 for lunch) hat restaurant in Sydney at least twice a month, for a lot less, a much better, sorry to say but you can't eat the view, won't be back, maybe just for coffee.
