We had a light meal here a while ago. The shallot pancake is huge, even the small size, so please be aware of this when ordering. It can be a little on the greasy side. Northern meat buns were excellent and juicy, but could have used some dipping sauce. The salt and pepper crab was tender and spicy, though it could have used a tiny bit less salt so the crab flavour could come through more.
Service was fast and friendly. It was nice to be in a Newtown restaurant that was so packed with tables you were elbowing the person next to you. Well done.
Tried this restaurant for the first time a week ago and was pleasantly surprised.
We ordered the fried northern dumplings as an entree and they were very tasty and arrived quickly. We also ordered honey chicken, salt and pepper squid and sweet and sour pork. The squid was delicious and other mains were good also.
Not the best value chinese on King St, but good quality.
This place was really disappointing. I went there with two friends on a Sunday night, and after waiting a good 20 minutes after we decided what we would have, we finally ordered some dumplings and three mains. The dumplings were ok, which we finished quickly. After about half an hour, two of the mains came out. We politely waited for the third, and after enquiring of its whereabouts we were reassured it would come out "in a few minutes".
A few minutes turned out to about another 25 minutes. In the meantime, we started to peck on the two mains that had arrived, and while having some of the Szechuan chicken, one of us almost swallowed a piece of transparent plastic about three centimetres in length! Again, without causing a fuss, it was pointed it out to the waitress, who looked at it, and said "sorry". No offers of changing the dish, or a freebie, but then again we didn't demand it nor did we cause a scene.
Finally the third main came out, and instead of the beef that had been ordered, we received a plate of honey chicken! By that stage our movie down at road was almost starting so we figured its best not to return it, in fear that the proper main might take another half an hour to arrive. The dumplings were ok. The mains were muddled and way too salty, and the service was really, really bad.
The food was too salty but it was at the least better than the bland chinese food we get elsewhere. Overall it was better than others and great but a waiter was a bit clumsy.
Dumpling King is an excellent addition to King Street. I've eaten there numerous times, and it's never let me down. Their dumplings are fantastic, and their mains are as well. The fried Northern Style Dumplings are my favourite, but the steamed meat buns are awesome as well. The Mongolian beef, pepper steak udon noodles and crispy chicken are some of my favourites. Their spicier dishes (Chilli Crab, Szechuan Chicken) have been the only disappointments, and even those were not bad at all. If you like real Chinese food, check this place out.
This place is good. The fried northern dumplings are a must have, order the large size, you won't be disappointed. Also tried the hand made noodles with beef which were excellent, salt and pepper squid is also good, have visited twice now and ordered the same things each time so will have to try something new next time. There are plenty of interesting dishes on the menu besides the stock standard western dishes.
Prices are very reasonable and you can byo wine also even though it is licensed, the wine list is about the only disappointing thing about this place but with byo at $2 a person this not a problem.
Mmmmm I love dumplings and these are some of the best! Not a huge variety unfortunately but they are very very good. Also the other dishes we've tried so far (noodles with pork mince, chinese cabbage with vinegar and an eggplant dish) are equally delicious.
Not as good value as Chinatown but it's pretty, it's friendly and the staff are lovely. Don't go for the Western dishes (honey chicken etc.), just stick to Northern Chinese staples and you won't be disappointed!
