Doytoa is a local for us, we love it. Not for Saturday night or a special occasion but a great cheap eat. Service is the fastest I have come across and the bill has never been a bad surprise. It is always busy and a bit noisy, very thailand'ish. Dinner for 2 less than $30.
Absolutely terrible experience. I ordered Pad Thai Tofu, and they forgot to put any tofu in it. There were hardly 3 vegetable pieces in it, and it was very bland. And this cost me $10. Not very happy.
Food consistently good, the duck salad is a must-try! Have really enjoyed every dish I've tried here, particularly the mussels, which I had for the first time this week, just delicious. Ambience pretty disappointing, always feel squished-in and crowded, and certainly very noisy. Service good, polite and efficient. Perhaps, a little too efficient, mains often brought about 5 minutes after entrees! Great prices, too. Overall, I really do recommend this place. Not for an intimate dinner, though!
Previous Review, December 2007: I've visited Doytao numerous times (go at night for the volcanic chicken!) Last visited on Saturday afternoon, luckily it wasn't too packed (otherwise you have to shout to make yourself heard). My $7.50 lunch special (red curry, lamb) was awesome. I've never quite had red curry like this before, sweet, moreish, delish! The portion of rice was too small though and swimming in too much sauce. (My friend's seafood laksa ($14.50), according to him, was nice, but they used vermicelli noodles instead of hokkien.
Service was very friendly, a bit basic as is the case at most King St Thai eateries. Atmosphere = 5/10 because we were seated rather close to King St and were treated to buses going up and down the main road. Good value but I think Thai La Ong's $6 lunch special is a better deal. Bigger portions and cheaper. Then again, there isn't as much competition on South King Street.
Update July 08: We revisited Doytao with a group of 7 people. Despite having booked a table for 7 people at 12pm, my only gribe is that they gave us an extremely small table that we had to cram ourselves around. This is despite the restaurant being less than half full at the time. I understand that the place does fill up rapidly but surely they should treat valued customers, those who book ahead of time, with a bit more generosity! The meal consisted of much juggling of plates due to the lack of table space. However the food is still delicious and the staff fairly attentive considering how busy it gets.
Update Dec 08: Revisited Doytao early in the evening on Monday night - but was surprised when they questioned us about whether we had a booking (we hadn't). We were then grudgingly given a seat in the smoky kitchen area. The restaurant was nowhere near full and didn't get too busy during the evening, so I am surprised they treat their regulars this way. Perhaps you should book ahead when coming to Doytao in order to get a better seat (well, read my June 08 review for a caveat...) We had volcanic chicken, Penang curry and octopus, and it was all delicious.
Update Feb 09: Booked for 5 on a Saturday night. All food was delicious (spring rolls, volcanic chicken, BBQ lamb, cashew nut chicken was rather syrupy and sweet if you like it that way) but the absolute standout was the RED CURRY. I can't believe how good it is here!
Update May 09: have been coming to Doytao often, mostly for their BBQ pork and Pad Thai. The food is consistently good here, and well worth a visit.
Great range of vegetarian entrees and mains with great tastes. Have always found the service to be friendly and quick. Noisy at night due to be packed.
We arrived for lunch, the restaurant was empty but for some reason the waitress sat us in a squishy corner right beside an entrance ramp. Obviously so passing trade would see us through the window and think the place was a popular haunt. Anyways, we moved our plates and glasses over to another table down the back which was roomier and out of the glaring sunlight.
Ordered from the lunch menu, King prawn pad thai serving was huge, but came with only one prawn. Penang chicken curry was served on a large flat dish which made it hard to scoop up the sauce onto our plates. However, flavours were delicious and the vegies served with the curry were fresh and plentiful.
I had a pretty bad experience at the Doytao Thai in Newtown, the service was really poor we waited to be served for 15 minutes, they wouldn't let me move my chair away from the door as I had a cool breeze on my back, we waited another 15 minutes to receive our bill. The food was very average have definitely had better thai, I won't be back.
Another solid Thai joint. Like most places in Sydney, you get value for money and a decent feed. My only complaint about this place is that sometimes you feel cramped due to the lack of space/amount people. We suggest as a great place to meet some mates and smash a couple of cheeky bottles of vino (bottle shop across the road if 2 bottles not enough...).
I've had better. Food is decent. Nothing different to any other thai place. The place is extremely crammed and the staff can tend to be rather rude at times. Parking is a shocker (not the restaurants fault, but hey.. it's part of the experience). Wish this place did something different/better than all the other million thai places on the same street.
