This has become one of my favourite restaurants in Sydney. My family and I have been dining here for a number of years and the food never falls short of being fresh, delicious and just truly scrumptious. After a recent trip to Japan this food really stacks up to the mother land delights.
Pouring down rain so needed a place with undercover parking so remembered that this little shopping plaza has a number of restaurants. There are a couple of Japanese here but we decided on Dontack as it looked a little nicer than the others. Mind you, its not super flash, with hard uncovered wooden tables and chairs but still had a pleasantly oriental feel about it.
Started with an excellent entree of eggplant and chicken covered in tempura batter and served with a light dipping sauce. But then the mains let them down. My wife ordered a Pork Noodle dish. Most other noodle dishes were listed on the menu as a soup but as this one didn't mention soup she assumed it was noodles on a plate.
Of course, it turned up as a soup which was not what she had wanted. Likewise, I ordered the Kimuchi (Japanese Kimchi) Hotpot, which was described as a hotpot of pork and kimchi. It did have those but it also arrived with two large mussels on the shell in it, which was entirely unexpected. Many would be delighted but I don't like mussels and despite taking them out they had given the stock a decidely seafoody taste which severely dented my enjoyment.
I know its not always easy for small dining spots but I don't like places that, when asking for the bathroom, get given a key and lengthy directions e.g. down the corridor, across the carpark and at the far end, etc, etc. Amongst other things, its not always safe to expect a woman to walk through a dimly lit public carpark late at night in search of the plaza's communal loo.
The parking is easy, it's BYO, the prices are very reasonable and the service is okay. The staff stumble with a few language difficulties and the menu needs to be much better at explaining what each dish is.
The chef (looks like owner) kindly welcome us, staff are very friendly. The food was delicious and good price. Our family decide to be a regular customer.
Yes, not bad at all. We ordered a mix of sashimi, sushi, Agedashi tofu, mixed tempura, gyoza and a salad. All very nice, couldn't really fault anything at all. The gyoza especially were beautiful, crisp but not at all oily. The service we received was extremely friendly and very efficient. The only useful suggestion I could make would be to try and make the 'specials' board a little easier to read, I couldn't really make much sense of it but this is a minor thing.
Also, perhaps, adding some tuna to the sashimi selection might be worthwhile. I'll definitely come back here, they do offer quite a large selection of cooked dishes, some of which I must admit I'd never heard of, that I would be interested to try. All in all a nice, clean place offering great food, and good service at a reasonable price.
A very small restaurant in a corner on willoughby, however, excellent food. We love japanese and this little place is one of the best in the north shore. To try: udon, agedashi tofu, sashimi, donburi. Overall: very fresh authentic japanese.
nb: can be packed/booked out. Good idea to book beforehand.
Awesome place! if you're after truly authentic japanese food I recommend you to come here, I tried kimuchi hot pot and chicken teriyaki dinner box and they were both amazing. Also great price!
Since this restaurant was recommended by a friend, I tried it out with a friend of mine on a Monday night. I absolutely loved the food there, as it has the flavour of traditional Japanese food. We ate Yakitori and Agedashi tofu as entrees and Sushi and Sashimi Combination and Chicken teriyaki as mains. Great food, good service and a friendly, casual atmosphere. I'll definitely be going back!!
We went to this place after reading the good reviews and frankly it was a disappointment. We had agedashi tofu and shabu-katsu dinner set and katsu mains. The katsu was really oily and not much flavour at all. The miso soup and the clear noodle soup were nice and along with the agedashi tofu were probably the only good things. Service was polite. For the quality of food this place is overpriced.
