Best thing you can say about Din Tai Fung is that the service is excellent. There are plenty of staff and they are quick to take your order, and the food arrives in a timely fashion. Unfortunately, the food itself is not of the same quality, while not 'bad', it just doesn't stand out, which is hardly a surprise given how quickly the kitchen seems to pump it out.
Waiting for a table to become free can take some time, especially during lunch. Also they do not seat individual tables for 2, so be warned that if you intend on going with just your partner or one friend, you will be sharing a table with others.
The dumplings were OK, nothing too special and half of them weren't available. We had a choice between pork ; pork and prawn; and vegetable ... very disappointing. We also ordered some soups which were just about inedible. Maybe I'm not a dumpling "expert" but I won't be going back.
The steam dumpling is absolutely fantastic, I love it!! Their side dishes also nice. Service is attentive. Their portions are small but the food it delicate. Maybe compare other Asian restaurant the price is more expensive, but I would like to spend more money on delicate food and nice service.
I thought it was fab, the staff are so switched on - my friend dropped a fork and two of the staff's ears pricked up and they dashed for the fork and replaced it. I felt like it was an SAS mission. Food was good - I am not a dumpling expert but everything we ordered was Y--uu---mm--mm--y.
Hardly any waiting, they only got a little confused at the end with the bill and a client survey but all in all a great meal in a busy place on a Monday night. I will be going back!
Excellent food and environment. You really can't fault the quality of their crab meat steamed buns. The vegetable wontons were also good and in a nice clear broth.
The windows leading to the kitchen remind me of places in China. It was all a bit expensive though and the service was so quick that you didn't really get a chance to sit down and soak up the atmosphere. Would come back here though.
I was so excited about going to this place, so many people hyped me up about the delicious dumplings etc. However, it was a big let down after I ordered my first set of pork dumplings. It was the steamed crab meat and pork and it tasted like bland meat processed together in little tiny dumpling portions. Every other pork dumpling tasted the same, there was excess water dripping from it and it was soggy.
I have to say the century egg and tofu with shredded pork and the hot & sour soup were quite nice. The only thing I enjoyed was their taro dumplings (delicious). The prices are way too expensive for undersized dumplings served in oversized plates and steam containers. Sorry it was a let down for me - most probably because I expected too much.
The service was terrific though and the decor very pretty. If you are willing to share a table, you will get seated pretty much straight away but be willing to wait 30-40 mins for a private table.
Today was my second visit to Din Tai Fung. The dumplings were so delicate and lovely. We had the pork dumplings and the pork and crab. Both were lovely and succulent. We also had the braised beef soup which is what they are known for.
You have to have the lychee and mint drink. It was fantastic. I think you have to come here not with YUM CHA in mind. Have a few dumplings and a bowl of soup and you won't be disappointed. On our way out we saw Tetsuya waiting in line with some friends... Got to be good.
4 of us visited mid week early evening and were able to get a table without queuing, though it really filled up by 7 pm. Service was prompt and polite. Our favourites were the pork and prawn wontons with tangy sauce, the pickled vegetable and shredded pork salad, and of course the xiao long bao, though they had apparently already sold out of the crab and pork ones.
Lychee and mint juice was great. We thought that the dumplings, though nicely cooked, not too soggy etc all pretty much tasted the same, though as we had plenty of the tangy sauce from the wonton dish, we didn't mind.
We have been here a few times now and we have to admit, the dumplings are pretty good! We've tried almost all the different types of dumplings on offer, the traditional pork and prawn dumplings are quiet good, however, the crab meat dumplings are probably not worth the price they charge you. The 2 worst things about this restaurant is probably the queue and the low value.
Din Tai Fung does not do bookings and therefore you would be lucky if you were seated in 20-30minutes. The prices for the small dumplings are also so over-priced it is probably worth a second thought about whether to come here on a regular basis or not.
Yeah the dumplings are good, but half the other things on the menu weren't available. Basic things like pork buns and mango pudding are pretty important when you go out for what is basically yum cha, a person can't live on dumplings alone! It's also a lot more experience than your average yum cha place, most of which probably goes towards the fancy decor. However, it's a cool idea having a window where you can look through at the chefs making the dumplings.
