My first visit here is with 4 dining companions. We've heard great things, so go in with fairly high expectations. We are not let down. The waiters are very attentive, helpful choosing dishes that meet each of our spice tolerances. We ate sufficiently for about 30 dollars each, no dessert. BYO is always nice as I find most restaurants with very boring choices of very average wines. And finally the food was simply delicious.
This place has excellent food and service, and is definitely worth trying out. I'll not criticize it for absence of a garage/valet, it's just unfair to judge a restaurant by adding in the famous Newtown race for parking spots. The only negative for me is that the small restaurant is just too cramped, crowded and noisy on Friday and Saturday evenings.
Came to Delhi 'O' Delhi for a special occasion, based solely on the recommendation of Eatability... and we were not disappointed! Service was prompt and consistent, and not at all intrusive. Food was wonderful, we shared the Pani Puri Chaat as entree, it was indeed a "tongue teaser" but I'd probably wouldn't order it again.. the blast of chilli & yoghurt & mint sauce chutney was fine as a one-off experience for me!
As for the mains, we ordered butter chicken and lamb saag with delicious soft fluffy naan bread ($3 for a gigantic portion!!) Both dishes were delicious although I did think that the butter chicken dish was rather small.
To finish we had the Pistachio Kulfi ($5.90) and the Mango Kulfi ($5.90) - basically a plate of pistachio ice-cream and mango-icecream. I ordered the pistachio ice-cream with high expectations, based on a review below, but in the end it was the mango kulfi that blew me away, it tasted just like frozen mango lassi, absolutely delicious!!
All in all the staff were wonderful, the ambience is better than most other restaurants, and 2 people can be reasonably fed for about $30 pp. A great find - thanks to eatability!
I'm not the best person to comment in regards to Indian food but I enjoyed what I got at Delhi O Delhi.
The flavours in the food were just enough without being too strong or unbalanced. The service provided was very good. I was there with a big group on a Thursday night and all 10 of us had whatever requests we had filled and taken care of quickly even though the restaurant was busy. However, the ambience of the place was never compromised and it felt very comfortable whether you are there with a big or small group.
As it was a group dinner, it was hard to judge the value for money but we all left full and happy which is always a good sign. This is a very professional and enjoyable Indian restaurant.
Equally the best service my family have experienced in Sydney. The food is great and value is good. Wine list is also a fine addition. However, the service and attention to detail keeps us coming back again and again.
If you want a place with free parking at the door ... this is not your venue of choice. Newtown .. King Street ... pedestrian paced traffic, and no parking at all. Anyway, we arrived here on a cold night, and they left the door open all night. Not a good start. Luckily, we chose a table away from the door near the kitchen. Very (perfectly) cosy! The place is not big, and there was a large table set aside for a booking (thank goodness we got to order before they did). There are tables outside if you enjoy the weather and traffic noise.
The food was not too bad. We chose the biryani lamb and fish special. The fish was a little calmari-esque, but tasty. The lamb was a little on the dry side, as was the accompanying rice. On a positive note, the naan was very tasty - soft and yet crusty. Great for mopping up the fish dish juices. The mineral water was a little pricey, $4.90 a medium sized bottle (hint - buy in bulk from Harris Farm, you can get a case for this price!).
All in all, I am not sure if this restaurant rates an 8 or above. There are many that will compete on location, accessibility, taste/cooking. But if you live nearby, it would be a good standby. They offer 15% discount on takeaways and free delivery. I'll be looking into that service for sure.
Forget your bright orange and red takeaway places, this place rocks! Eat in or takeaway, this is the best Indian food in the Inner West by far. The service is superb. Try the Chettinand Chicken or Metti Murgh for a real treat.
I love Indian food and find it hard to dine somewhere that doesn't serve their curry swimming in gravy with too many potatoes... or so much spice that you can't actually taste anything else. Our group of 8 were greeted with a bowl of pappadums with some cumin spice in them, very tasty.
The meal was really well paced. We ordered a variety of different entrée’s to start with. The mixed entrée dish including some really tasty lamb and fish. Spinach, lentil patties and curry puffs. Each came out separately with enough time to enjoy.
We then ordered some garlic naan bread and rice to accompany our main meals. We ordered two prawn dishes, 2 butter chickens, vindaloo, a Rogan josh, three other beef dishes and another lamb dish. I can’t remember the names of them.
The food was very tasty and the right amount of spice and flavour. Our water was always topped up and byo was only $2 per person corkage. We were all really full and there was food left over but of course we had to order sweets. Half the group ordered the Indian pistachio ice-cream and we all tried it and decided it was so good that the rest of us ordered it.
The sweet milk dumplings were also fantastic. The girls enjoyed the Chai Marsala tea. The bill came to about $35 each for an enormous amount of quality food and great service. We took a takeaway menu with us on the way out and will definitely be back again. I’m not sure if it is because it is off the main strip of Newtown but the staff were very attentive and it didn’t have the usual Newtown cheap and cheery feel to it.
Wow! We eat a lot of curry so we like to think we know our stuff. This is the best curry we've had in Sydney. The goat aloo was fantastic, the saag paneer was creamy and delicious, and the naan was the lightest, fluffiest naan I've ever had.
Service was great, attentive but respectful. The restaurant itself is nice and comfy, modern and clean. We had two mains, a keema naan, rice and poppadoms for two. That plus the corkage for our wine and it still only came to 40 bucks. Fantastic value. It's just a shame we live so far away, otherwise I can see us eating here once a week at least, we liked it that much.
Food is consistently good, whether eat in or take away. Service is warm and professional and the ambience is relaxed and friendly. Particularly good meat dishes, the meat is very good quality here. We will keep coming back.
