Had dinner on Saturday night with 4 friends. The only empty place in the Forum...now I know why. Barrumundi fillets were the size of baby carrots, absolutely tasteless (my friend who had this was still hungry after), Veal Parmigana tasted like it came out of a box, Linguine with prawns tasted like nothing at all. I had the Vegetarian Risotto, all I tasted was rice and butter, no matter how much Parmesan Cheese place on it, it tasted no better, also we needed loads of salt.
The host was very arrogant and after much complaining we didn't pay for 1 meal. I will never go there again. Please there are better Italian places to eat than this.!
Went there to eat with a few friends, took a punt to eat at the empty restaurant in the forum... bad decision. The restaurant was pretty empty which rang warning bells but we tried to stay optimistic. Very disapointed in the food to say the least.
1 friend ordered the gnocchi which wasn't a very large portion and looked like it had been slapped on the plate, my other friend ordered a steak that was very very small, my boyfriend ordered a veal, which was also very very small and didn't look too flesh.
Myself and my other friend ordered a risotto with mussels. We could smell the mussels approaching our table, and it wasn't a good mussel smell. They smelt off and it was hard to justify whether to eat it and not waste money. The risotto wasn't anything special either, watery tomato flavoured rice. Not impressed with this place at all!
Ordered Gnocchi and other pastas and was disgusted with the portion size. I am a big boy and portions were the size of a small fist. Had Maccas afterwards just to satisfy my hunger. Had I know portions for a main were that small I would have never eaten there. Can get much bigger portions for less the price elsewhere.
Wow I am a little shocked by the number of bad reviews below for Dante's. I am a Leichhardt local and have been to this restaurant twice. I have always been welcomed and seated instantly. On one occasion when there was no room available, they found a table then relocated us to an even better one as soon as it came available.
We had exceptional service and never had to ask for anything even though it was a busy Saturday night.
I love the menu and it's authentic Italian cuisine which had changed from the first visit to the second (only 2 months). And for a meal at only $20 or so, the portions were just right and we left completely satisfied.
Service was extremely bad, we asked 3 different people for drinks which we had to keep asking for an hour until they arrived. The main meals took 2 hrs to arrive only after much persistence in asking the waiters. We had two very young children who were starving and didn't eat their dinner until 10:30 pm!
Once the mains had been received we were extremely disappointed with the quality and blandness of the food and had to send a steak back which was ordered as a medium-well done and received as a very rare dish. This meal never came back out by the time we finished so we decided to leave. The only consolation is that we received a 50% discount off our bill because we complained.
What's not to like about sitting out in the warm sun enjoying a plate of pasta for Saturday lunch? I enjoyed the penne with slow cooked octopus even if it was fairly basic and unremarkable. Service was friendly, albeit a little confused at times. The menu is curiously short, but that isn't always a bad thing (I'll take a restaurant offering 10 varied dishes over one offering 80 similar dishes).
I was appalled by the service I received at Dante this evening. Contrary to the seemingly rather good reviews this restaurant gets, I would never recommend it.
My waiter was remarkably cocky and bragged that their chef was one of the top ten Italian chefs in Australia. I beg to differ.. I'm all for spending top dollar on well-deserving talent, but both prices and portions at Dante are ridiculous. I could have made better at home. Thank you for an awful experience.
We went to Dante on 1/3/08. Service was awful; waiters went by for 45 minutes without taking any orders. We had to stop one of the waiters to get our orders. After orders taken, some orders never arrived (we asked for caeser salad that never arrived but charged on our bill), we had to keep asking for our drinks which ended up coming towards the end of meal. We had to ask several times for a piece of cutlery and eventually gave up. Pasta arrived cold and half uncooked.
Our bill had items that belong to another table. When we tried to mention these to the manager, his excuse was "I cannot be everywhere". No apologies whatsoever. Rude people. Very disappointed. I felt so bad about the whole experience that first time in my life I googled restaurant reviews to write about it. I will never go back.
Disappointing. Menu is quite limited and the food was pretty ordinary. We normally go to La Vigna (it is closed for renovation) and sapore by the fountain had too many noisy kids in it. Waitress was professional and courteous but the owner/waiter was very pushy and familiar. Won't go back again. At least it was quiet there.
Our meal at Dante's was a total disaster. The person at the entrance was over eager then took 10 minutes to find our table. Entrees were nice enough (although how can you go wrong with bruschetta) but our mains were delivered 2 minutes after our entrees. By the time we started eating our mains, the food was lukewarm and also very bland. I hate to think how a kitchen can cook a pesto gnocchi and a lamb dish in 5 minutes!
We passed on dessert after the disaster of our mains. We elected to use our entertainment card and were shocked to see the senior staff scratch the appropriate number off the back of our card with the knife used to cut up fruit and garnishes in the bar. We would not recommend this restaurant and will not be returning.
