Dined out tonight with my family. Front of house greeting was a bit over the top and the service for the rest of the night was beyond a joke. Nothing we ordered came as ordered. A pasta ordered for a main arrived as an entree size. Our desserts took more than forty minutes despite having told the staff that we were a bit pressed for time.
Apparently they have exploding souffles and ours had to be made again. Our bill was full of errors-all over charging. It's a shame the service was so appalling, when the food was really pretty decent. Also the dinner for 5 people exceeded $300 which was pretty steep when some of us only had entrees. We won't be back, which is a shame, as we are local and love Italian cuisine.
Dinner on a thursday and neither of us could understand the comment about serving size, we could not finish our main courses and we both have good appetites. The mushrooms were great and my friend enjoyed his salad, while both main course (lamb and skate) were good. Able to take BYO on thursday night so that is a bonus. Will return.
Good atmosphere. Service was very good, warm greeting at the door, then efficient and friendly for the rest of the evening. Can recommend the grilled mushrooms with garlic as a starter. Wine list not extensive, adequate for the style of restaurant and food. Had an excellent Pinot Noir from Central Otago. Good local Italian restaurant. Would visit again.
Should have gone somewhere else. The byo price of $15 on a licenced night was not explained to us, the 3 slices of proscuitto for $19 was ridiculous, the lamb that is a signature dish and was recommended was salty, over priced and was tasting a little bit like mutton, the $15 corkage bottle was always kept way from us, somewhere we could not get to?
My wife and I had a lovely meal here last night. The food was very good though not excellent, the service excellent and the vibe very nice. Good quality Italian restaurant for meal with partner or few friends. Maybe a tad on the expensive side but I wouldn't certainly return.
I am one of the diners that cannot understand the bad reviews this place gets, I can only think they are comparing the portion size to a generic Norton St 'Italian' restaurant and can't comprehend that anyone would get poor service here.
This restaurant is definitely a cut above and worth every cent. Beautiful food (best duck I've had, bug pasta is divine, special of grilled scampi mouth-watering etc...), attentive and friendly knowledgeable service, good selection of wines by the glass, lovely ambience.....
The desserts looked amazing too but we couldn't fit them in after two courses and we are healthy eaters (what was that about portion size??). Looking forward to coming back again and again....
Overall a nice place for dinner, key word is nice. Two entrees and mains, a bottle of pinot gris, coffee and dessert wines for a tad over $200, didn't leave us with a WOW experience. The Blue Swimmer Crab risotto for starter was enjoyable although it would have been good to have more crab meat in it than the 5 or 6 crumbs of meat. The Grilled Smoked Motzerella and Parma Ham was gorgeous which saved the entree.
Don't go here for service!! Portion control is wonderful (you get very little), waitress was rude and forever fulling up our water glasses with the wrong water, some had still some sparkling, problem could have been solved by using a lemon.
I send my meal back as it was cold, everyone had finished by the time I got mine back. I regrettably walked out then came back, it was a family birthday, would have loved to walk to the servo and get them some milk.. These people have lost the art of service with a smile!! I would never go back to the Trattori.
Hubby and I had a blissful dinner here on the weekend, the kind of restaurant experience that makes you feel like all is right with the world. Food and ambience exquisite, yes the booths aren't huge but if I can fit in them at 29 weeks pregnant they can't be that narrow, and they offer a fantastic view of everyone else from young couples having a romantic date to family groups celebrating dad's birthday, having a terrific time.
This place has all the little touches to make it a bit special occasion-ish- juicy olives and parmesan wafers served on arrival, warm diffuse lighting, crisp white tablecloths and waiters aprons but also a welcoming, down to earth quality thanks to the lovely woman maitre d', the italian 'greatest hits' soundtrack (think fellini films and better known operas) and unpretentious but spectacularly tasty food based on top produce.
And no dishes over $30, which in the inner city post GST, is about the price you expect for pub grub, rather than something this special.
Not sure why there are negative reviews, but the service was fantastic, the food was really good, I enjoyed a special of scampi, simply done in oil, garlic, parsley (italian at its simplest and best). Followed with a fantastic pork belly on a bed of lentils and cavelo nero. My wife shared my scampi and had an equally impresive duck leg and breast on a bed of cabbage, chestnuts and other yummy herbs.
We also ordered some sides (which we could have skipped based on the filling mains) of spinach and garlic and a rocket, radichio, parmesan salad which were also simple and good. We're quite fussy and this place matched/exceed expectations we would go back for sure.
Hoping the early negatives were a result of teething problems, they derserve higher that an average of 6 based on our experience.
