Overview
This is one of the newer restaurants in the Crows Nest area situated just off Willoughby Rd in what used to be known as Piars Indian Restaurant. The Indian theme continues but the food, service and atmosphere has been elevated to a higher level with new owner / chef Ravi Gandhi. He is one of India's top 20 master chefs and just one taste of his specialty dish Murg Peshwari will send your tastebuds into instant understanding as to why. Ravi Gandhi is a third generation restaurateur / chef who brings to Sydney the tradition of Punjabi North Indian cuisine that is in his genes as well as extensive experience in the discerning London market.
Cumin serves up authentic North Indian Cuisine in a stylish and relaxed atmosphere. Your opinion of Indian food will never be the same after experiencing a wonderful lunch or dinner here and it is great value.
I have been coming here with my partner for over 1 year now at least once a month. The great thing about this place is the service is always great. They are friendly and very welcoming unlike the thai restaurant up the road from them.
The food is always great and consistent you never get a cold meal or a burnt meal etc. I have been to every restaurant I could find in st leonards and would have to say this is by far the best one there.
We have been here often in the last two months. The food is quite consistent. There is a long menu and good vegetarian choices. Generally the food is very good and probably the best in the north shore. Staff very friendly. Pleasant surroundings. Reasonable wine list.
My partner and I went here for dinner on a Wednesday night. The Indian food was fabulous, tasty and different in flavour to 'run of the mill' Indian eateries. The service was a little slow - we waited a good 20 minutes from entree to main, and the bill was a tad pricey. $110 for two - no alcohol.
We went here last night for dinner - a group of 7. I booked it because I love the name but also the reviews are really good. The restaurant itself was lovely with a cosy feel to it and the food was fantastic - the flavours were so divine. The fish - I think it was called hari Maachi was to die for - even a non fish eater loved the sauce. The Cumin spiced prawns for entree were fantastic too - lovely and spicy. The chicken entree - Kesar Kastin (I wrote down the names when ordering) was so delicious. The Murg Peshwari mentioned is also divine.
The service was also fantastic - very efficient and friendly, timing was just right with the food, good with the water too. The other thing very much in its favour was the expresso machine. So many Asian restaurants only serve instant or badly brewed coffee and I love my coffee at the end of the night. The whole cost was $45 per person including a nice tip which we all felt was very reasonable - anything under $100 a couple these days is great.
I highly recommend this restaurant. My mouth is watering as I write this. The whole party I was with raved about it and I can't wait to go back.
The best Indian on the lower North Shore. Simple. Interesting specialty dishes, great service. The best lamb biryani I've had, not overloaded with garlic.
Have eaten here many time since Oct 07 and the food is always gorgeous, well I can only vouch for the vegetarian dishes but my carnivorous friends always seem happy, love the fact on many dishes you have the option of whether it's cooked in olive oil or ghee. e
If you order by phone takeout is always ready in under 30 mins for collection and Raavi himself is a gent who remembers you. (I am a westerner who has eaten in many Indian restaurants all over the world (happens a lot if you are vego) including 10 weeks in India), Raavi's Cumin: Ace.
Went there yesterday for dinner with 3 other friends and must say that we were all hesitant to enter as the restaurant had only 2 other people. After being seated, we were promptly handed the menu and water and soon one of the staff came to take our order. They recommended the Lamb Cutlets and the Kesari Murg as an entree.
For the mains we had the Chicken Peshwari, Malai Kofta and a Spinach with Prawns dish with their cumin rice and Kashmiri Naan (otherwise, known as the Peshawari Naan). Everything was absolutely beautiful! By the time we were done, the place was almost packed!! We were too full for dessert but did order the Cobra beer for the first time, must say I still prefer the KingFisher anyday!! Will definitely be back!
Beautiful people serving very good food. It does stand out in comparison to the other Crows Nest indian eateries. Recommended for a good meal with good value for dollars!
We were very disappointed with our experience. The food was overpriced (14 bucks for 1 piece of chicken thigh cut into 3 portions is outrageous!) and overcooked (said chicken was very dry). Don't bother with this restaurant, better to go to the other Nepali and Indian restaurants down the road in the shopping centre.
I have been to this restaurant twice, and on both occasions the food was very good. The vegetarian paneer makhani was divine, and dishes are good value for money. The atmosphere is clean, simple and colourful, and the service from staff was friendly and attentive. While I don't eat meat, our friend said the butter chicken was one of the best he had eaten.
