Overview
This is one of the newer restaurants in the Crows Nest area situated just off Willoughby Rd in what used to be known as Piars Indian Restaurant. The Indian theme continues but the food, service and atmosphere has been elevated to a higher level with new owner / chef Ravi Gandhi. He is one of India's top 20 master chefs and just one taste of his specialty dish Murg Peshwari will send your tastebuds into instant understanding as to why. Ravi Gandhi is a third generation restaurateur / chef who brings to Sydney the tradition of Punjabi North Indian cuisine that is in his genes as well as extensive experience in the discerning London market.
Cumin serves up authentic North Indian Cuisine in a stylish and relaxed atmosphere. Your opinion of Indian food will never be the same after experiencing a wonderful lunch or dinner here and it is great value.
Raavi's Cumin was my first experience dining Indian and what a pleasant experience it was. A warm greeting and friendly staff made initial skepticism fade instantly. We were a table of three and when we inquired whether we could have the banquet (which is otherwise made for a minimum of four), the staff were happy to accomodate.
Now I do not know the finer details of Indian cuisine, however, all that was had was delightful on the tastebuds. What particularly stood out for me was the Balti Gosht, the lamb was tender and the juices watered in your mouth. Naan bread was soft and fluffy and was perfect to clean up the delicious curry sauces.
We continued onto dessert where we indulged in the Mango Kulfi, Anjeer (fig) Kaulfi and Gulab Jamun. Both the mango and fig were perfect sweets to cleanse our palate, however, I won't be rushing back to Gulab Jamun.
Overall the experience was refreshing. Raavi's is definitely somewhere I would visit again.
Best Indian in Sydney. Food is so fresh and tasty, must try the Palak paneer which is awesome. We have been there about 4 times and it's never failed. It's quite dear for Indian, but you really do get what you pay for. Usually we order 2 main courses, some roti, some rice and it's too much food. Expect to pay about $30 pp for food. They also deliver through cuisine courier, or you can pick up with a discount. Restaurant is usually always full and great service.
As a lover of Indian food, I tend to stick to my few favorite restaurants and didn't think it could get better than these till I dined at Raavis Cumin. The most flovoursome Vindaloos (lamb and beef) I've ever tasted. Every part of the meal was superb. Staff were extremely pleasant. Went back 2 weeks in a row. 2nd visit was every bit as good as the 1st. I can highly recommend!
A very solid experience last Friday, place was pumping, service was immaculate, better than most so called fine dining establishments. I went there with an English friend who complained there was not any decent curry in Sydney, he was most impressed. Try Murg Peshwari, it's yum and authentic, not the Aussified version of an Indian dish.
Raavi's cumin alright! My favourite kind of seeds are the cumin ones and boy did they use a lot of cumin in the foods! I want to be smothered in Cumin's dishes such as Murg Peshwari. You must go before you die.
We arrived 45 minutes early, hungry, we’d never been to Cumin before and hadn’t experienced the take away selection either. We were eagerly welcomed, seated and promptly served with water without having to ask for it. Our drink and food order was taken quickly, the service was impeccable and friendly but not intrusive. Our starter arrived (Chicken Tikka), succulent and full of flavour, as soon as we finished our dirty plates were taken away promptly and replaced with clean.
There was a gap between starters and main which was perfect, we don’t like to be rushed into the next course and feel as though we’re being pushed out the door. Our main courses of Chicken Madras and Beef Vindaloo arrived along with our choice of rice. We decided we’d like to add naan bread to our meal, our order was taken immediately and without confusion and we received it, fresh, just before we tucked into our mains.
The Madras is sensational, aromatic and the meat tender, a really excellent dish which I would recommend to anyone. The Vindaloo was equally fantastic, very hot, mouth watering and a real delight. We’ve had Vindaloo at other Indian restaurants and it hasn’t been hot, that certainly isn’t an issue for Cumin, they’re on the money with their recipe! We had plenty left over and asked if we could take it away, our request was met with a smile and before we even had a chance to pay our bill we had our doggy bag.
As we were leaving all our waiters thanked us and said goodbye. We can’t wait to go back.
We ordered two entree's two mains and bread. So here is the review. The entree's did not live upto the expectation nor to what was written in the menu. The fish was too overpowering and when asked staff which fish it is they had no idea and never even bothered to get back with an answer. The chicken entree we tried was like a piece of rubber and looked as if coming out straight from the microwave, for the mains we had butter chicken which was as bland and very sweet.
Have been to this restaurant at least 10 times and we order take away frequently. We have had everything on the vegetarian menu and all items are great! The Dal Makahni, is great and the staff is always great especially Ravi himself.
I have been to this restaurant twice, and on both occasions the food was very good. The vegetarian paneer makhani was divine, and dishes are good value for money. The atmosphere is clean, simple and colourful, and the service from staff was friendly and attentive. While I don't eat meat, our friend said the butter chicken was one of the best he had eaten.
Update: Returned here a year later with the same group of friends. The food is still good, however, I decided to rate the food down to 8 from 9 as the palak paneer wasn't as nice as last time (I could taste raw garlic). I also think the prices for some dishes have increased. Despite this small criticism, the dhal makhani and paneer makhani were still really tasty. : )
I can't praise Raavi and the staff enough. They know how to just be there at the right time and then disappear and not dominate the conversation. I know a bit about Indian food and love all the dishes here. The value is excellent, if you want cheaper ....."you'll pay the price for that"
Murg Peshwari - Succulent pieces of chicken marinated overnight in our "secret marinade", simmered to perfection in a medium spicy gravy. Ravi Gandhi has won various awards for this dish in Mumbai and around the world.
