Original review, June 2008: We had a Saturday lunch yum cha at Crystal for a table of 12. My best recommendation for you yum-cha lovers out there is to arrive early!! We arrived at 11:45 and nabbed the last big table.
Being of Chinese descent, I feel qualified to say that all dishes were authentically Chinese. However, having consumed so many different dishes, I can't really recommend or not recommend anything, they all have a same-ness about them. The dan tart (egg tart) was good though, and so was the bill - less than $15 per person.
Unfortunately, the ambience only gets rated 6/10 due to the renovations in the front room (bit weird to sit in a room which is blacked out by large posters sticky-taped to the wall...). But I'm sure the ambience of this place will improve once the renovations are done.
Updated review, August 2008: We came here for yum cha for 7 people. Let's start with the dessert - The dan tart was absolutely scrumptious and my sister raves about the "tofu-fa", a silken smooth tofu dessert. The rest of the meal was fairly ordinary (perhaps that's just the way I find yum cha). I revised the ambience up to 7/10 because sitting in the main part of the restaurant is actually quite nice (better than sitting in that strange part undergoing renovations). 7 people were happily satisfied for $95, which I consider fairly good value for money.
Great food and service, a bit of criticise about the place and that it is very hard to find and signage is very poor of restaurant, entry also no where near the map that is provided on the web, walked 4 times around the shopping plaza before finding the restaurant.
I have to agree with the other reviews here, this is, in my humble opinion, the best yum cha to be had in the inner west. The variety is impressive and the food is always fresh and steaming hot. I was particularly struck by the fact that they offer not one but two kinds of custard tart! (They have both flaky and shortcrust pastry.)
I find the service particularly smiley, attentive and helpful here. Tea is promptly refilled, and our waiter was more than happy to pack away our leftovers into some takeaway boxes for us.
Ambience could be improved a little. Perhaps, it's the renovations happening outside but the door was wide open, bringing in quite a cool draft on what was itself a very cool day. We had to keep eating to keep warm... although I guess that's not such a bad thing!
I had take away for Yum Cha, food is freshly prepared. Service is better than some other Chinese Restaurants. At least, I was greeted and thank you from a staff, which they should do more often.
This restaurant has come along way in the last 2 years. We had the Coral Trout with ginger and shallots, the fish is basted/cooked in extremely hot oil, a member of our party "doesnt like fish" and was literally a fish convert. This is a very traditional dish, the flesh was firm and juicy, the flavour was enhanced and not hidden by the ginger and shallots, superb.
I've been here a few times with people from work. We work at Burwood and make our way up during our lunch breaks for yum cha. The place is always full of happy Asian families with lots of buzzing conversation all around. Food is great with heaps of variety. Love all those steamed dumplings. I've noticed more desserts here than at most other places.
I love having Yum Cha here because I'm a local... The Yum Cha here is actually better than the one in Burwood as Crystal Seafood has more varieties. The service was great, as I find that some Chinese restaurants don't treat their Asian customers as nice! The food for dinner are great too, and prices are reasonable.
Excellent food, fantastic service (yum cha waitresses who actually smile). We were charged for tea we didn't have which was annoying but will be back and often.
My wife and I tried the Blacktown restaurant first and loved that so after being told by the manager there that there was another place in Strathfield, we just had to try! The service was excellent with plenty of jolly Chinese families. Have to agree, the more Chinese families you see, the better the food!
