Fantastic food and exceptional service. Can be a little rough around the edges at 3am but then again, who isn't?!?! Eclectic mix of people, always an experience. You will not find your 20 years old girls who are allergic to food here, more like real people and all!
From my apartment balcony, I watch all the people crowd into this area on the weekend because they think that there is actually something going on around here (Darlinghurst). If they think the area is good, I'd hate to see the suburb these people come from. The Courthouse is nothing special, either. The venue is only for getting drunk in. Zero atmosphere and charm.
We've visited here many times over the years- and, yes, it can sometimes be a little over the top- but the staff makes up for any shortcomings. Where else can you find a schooner of New for $3.20 (as of March 2004, anyway)- Most of the friends we've made in Sydney are made here- it's still the bar we consider our local when we're in Sydney!
Courthouse, what can I say. Many late nights end up at this venue. Sort of place you would meet people that you probably won't meet anywhere else let alone in a city pub. Can be really rough and you might find yourself engaged in a conversation with an extremely intoxicated person the second to garb your drink off the bar. A melting pot of drunk, out of luck, hardened individuals from all walks of life. Don't like drinking alone? This might be your place.....
The Courthouse is the only pub in Sydney that I absolutely refuse to go to. It supposedly has some degree of hipness, presumably due to its Taylor Square address, but the clientele here do nothing to recommend the place. I avoid it.
The pub's decor is utterly characterless. The use of legal-oriented names (The Courthouse, The Judgment Bar, etc ) could have prompted the owners to decorate the place with a 'legal eagle' theme (judges wigs, hammers, quills, and other prop-shop stuff) but, instead, the place has not changed its bland, boring look in more than a decade.
The downstairs bar is totally crap, filled with pensioners during the daytime and an absolute absence of atmosphere by night - weekends included. The upstairs bar is no better. You wouldn't even go there because it's like a comfortable old shoe or because you know what to expect.
You also have to tolerate abuse by drunk smart-alecs and fashion try-hards. The clientele are vaguely hip, vaguely fashionable inner-city types or, worse, people from the suburbs trying to have a hip time in a hip part of town. (Get a life, dudes.)
As I said at the top of the review, the Courthouse is the only pub in Sydney I refuse to go to. My comments are based on many visits over quite a few years. I went back once recently and absolutely nothing had changed in terms of the unappealing decor and the unappealing clientele. There are too many other pubs in the area to choose from for this appalling dive to rate a visit or an approval rating. Go elsewhere!
