I have been going to the Courty for years and really enjoy this pub. It has been slowly fixing itself up and is looking a lot better. I do agree that there is a bit of a wait at the bar, which can be annoying, but you get that when you go to a busy bar. I guess if you don't like that, you could always stay at the Carlise.
The atmosphere is always buzzing and the musics great. Good vibe all round, with most of the jerks keeping to King Street. The food can be a little over priced, but there is enough of it to fill you up.
We have been coming to the Courty for years. The food has always been good pub grub that filled you up for a bargain price. The prices have risen, but the food is still good. The only downside is the staff! The locals who drink there everyday are slowly disappearing. They are sick of having the bar staff serve their friends standing 3 people back at the bar, instead of the people standing at the bar. And if I am kind enough to let someone who was at the bar before me, then the logical thing is to serve me next, not the person behind me!
To make a point recently, I walked to the Carlise around the corner, bought 3 long necks and then returned to the Courty, to drink them, with no question from the staff. My friends and I had almost finished drinking them when our other friend returned to our table with his shout. If they keep this up then they will loose some more of their bread and butter customers. But at least the bar dosen't smell anymore!!
I went to the courthouse yesterday for the first time since the renovation and found that the bar absolutely stank!!! I had to hold my breath while ordering my drink. Service was really bad. Staff have attitude and obviously think a lot of themselves. Then while using the ladies toilets, I was appalled to find out that 2 of the ladies cubicle are clearly visible from the outside. No frosted glass there!! no no, you can see right into it! yes not kidding. I informed the senior staff on duty and he didn't seem to care for a second. Not happy and I don't think I will go back there.
Have been coming here for years, but seems like the kitchen has changed hands as my vegie burger tasted like a bun with a hocky puck in between! Barely luke warm and disappointedly un-edible. This joint used to have such great schnitzels that would spill off the plate, but since they've renovated the court yard, and slicked it up, it's dropped off a little which is such a bummer. I look forward to going there again soon to what was, and hope still is, an awesome and authentic Newtown pub experience!
The food is really bloody ordinary and slow, overcooked steak and mushy vegies, come guys how hard can it be??? I pity the girls on the counter if this is the norm! The service from the bar staff is good and the drinks are good too, the pub is great though and the courtyard is the best around hands down, shame about the food.
When I saw this place on the eatability listings my brain said "oh my god YESSS" because I just love it so dang much. After one beer I was in love, it feels like I have been going there for years. Ok its definitely not for the poncy yuppies who have taken the area over like the plague. I fancy it as more of a wild west saloon of the naughties, with clientele from all backgrounds- tradesmen, builders, designers, artists and bohemians. I was there on the eve of Earth Hour where the place was literally lit by candlelight! It was a night I will never forget. Oh yeah and the food's very decent too.
We've been coming to the Courthouse for years and think the reno's been great for the courtyard where we hang out -usually for lunch on a weekend. I usually get seafood and it's always good - other meals are generally pretty good too. Drinks were always affordable especially if you buy bottles of wine from the fridge as we do. However, on our last visit we picked up 2 or 3 bottles out of the fridge and took to counter for opening, glasses, etc and were charged not what was shown on the fridge but nearly double. They added on a massive surcharge for drinking it there. Now average quaffing $10 - $12 bottles are closer to $20. Sorry - we love the couryard and could cope with the meal prices taking a hike, but not the grog too.
I'm happy to pay more if we aim for a decent bottle which we sometimes do, but there's no excuse to pay any more than $10 - $12 for basic quaffing whites in a pub.
I like coming to the Courty for its retro decor, big sunny courtyard, unpretentious service, relaxed crowd, and its extensive bistro menu. I have to agree with lordy that the quality of the bistro food has declined. Also has the service -my friend and I both ordered nacho's (average at best) which took 50 minutes to arrive, on a quiet Saturday afternoon.
However I like the fact that the Courty is tucked away from the hussle and bussle of King St and I thoroughly enjoy the relaxed vibe of this quirky and interesting pub.
Great eclectic little local pub... skip the bistro, in summer they do seafood platters, no cooking required... pretty hard to stuff up..agree with pitprop.. watch the kiddies.
Beer tastes good, nice place to eat, plenty of room. If you order the $10 lunch specials, be aware that the steaks are usually burnt (asked for medium, got a hard, burnt steak with blood running out? Don't know how they did it) and the chicken shnitzel is nothing more than a large, processed, tasteless chicken nugget.
