Overview
Set in the heart of Mosman village on the corner of Gouldsbury St. and Military Rd., the Cottage Mosman is a charming listed building offereing a comturn.
I went here for breakfast and really wish I hadn't!!! The service was excellent, really friendly & attentive staff. The food however was awful. I had the Cottage Breakfast which was eggs benedict with a mustard hollandaise. The white part of the egg was still runny & raw. It hung off my fork like white slime. The sourdough toast was soggy & only one piece for 2 eggs - not nearly enough considering how wet my meal was.
My friend had the Vege Breakfast. Her eggs were cooked but it wasn't what she was expecting - rather bland & again not enough toast. The prices aren't cheap so we were expecting much better. Save your money and go elsewhere for breakfast!
New Chef, New Food, New Attitude: that's what the sign outside says. And what a difference. There has been an almost complete change at The Cottage. Front and back of house staff have been replaced and as a result, the food and service standards are unrecognisable. If only you'd waited a few more weeks before returning gertcha. This is a new restaurant!
The "bland italian" food (thank you gertcha, I thought that too) has gone and has been replaced with a modern Australian menu that uses good quality fresh ingredients. The aged fillet with red wine jus is particularly good. There is a simple dessert menu with comfortable classics like sticky date with butterscotch sauce, and it's rather refreshing to see a cheese and fruit plate as an alternative. At $45 for 3 courses, this is a must.
Had not eaten here for a while so revisited. Immediately noticed customers sitting with menus or waiting for food. It took 20 minutes to place our order. Water and starter of garlic bread took 45 minutes to reach our table. One mains was incorrect, happening on other tables as well. Food bland Italian. Cross this one off our list.
Returned here for an evening meal. The service was excellent, but we went on a weeknight, when the restaurant was not busy. Meals were excellent and reasonably priced. BYO and licensed. You have a choice of eating inside or outside.
Having read the reviews here (after booking for lunch) we were expecting slow service which we got. We found the menu boring. The nachos was big, the lasagne was plain and warm, but the Ceasar salad was good.
I went here a few days ago for just some coffee and toast with my Dad. We sat at a table for 30 min waiting for the waitress to come over with some menus. I finally had to go inside to get some. I also went back inside to order. It then took another 15 minutes to get 2 coffees and a serve of raisin toast. During this time people that came in after us got service and food before us. Maybe she knew I wasn't a local and she didn't like my studded belt and black T-shirt.
We've been going to this cafe for many, many years and must say we preferred it under the Hawthorne Cottage banner. But, having said that, Cafe Plaza's Tuscan soup is unnmatched anywhere. I would put up with all the other disappointing aspects just to have a bowl. Still, I would have to agree with Nikkit re service. We've been IGNORED after waiting 20 mins to be given a menu on TWO occasions. And even ignored as we've stood up in a huff and left both times. That's a bit rough. Especially for regulars.
We're fans of supporting local establishments but only if that's reciprocated. Service from some is extremely dour - but from the younger staff, exceptional, which only underscores the need for improvement. The minute that soup's off the menu, we're gone for good. Ambience is terrific but the dodgy service detracts from the overall experience.
Nikkit obviously hasn't been lately. The staff at Cafe Plaza Mosman speak English very well and give good service. The food is great, both at the day time cafe and the Italian restaurant at night (Tuesday to Saturdays from 6pm). You can sit inside or in the large outdoor area. In cold weather protected by an awning and plastic protective tent with gas heaters. In warm weather, it's open, great atmosphere. Licensed or BYO.
The coffee shop by day is busy, good food, great to sit outside under an umbrella.
Italian restaurant at night has a casual elegant atmosphere, great ambience, a good varied choice of delicious Italian food, divine sweets and friendly fast service.
