My girlfriend lives in Newtown, right up the city end, but we always make the trek down to Corelli's on Sunday morning. I'm not very potetic so I'll keep this short: I just love it there. The food is great, love the smoothies and the atmosphere is probably even better. I'm surprised by some of the reviews about service because we have never had a problem.
The service is just right, nothing worse than an annoying server bothering you all the time. I think it's the best place to people watch in Newtown, and my girlfriend has used them for catering too for a party, well worth it, in fact too much food. Love it. Highly recommended.
My wife claims this place has the best Corn Fritters for breakfast in Newtown. The eggs benedict is okay too, however not the best in Newtown - that award belongs to the tapas restaurant at the city end of King Street.
The issue I have with this cafe, is predominantly the service or lack there of. The main lady behind the counter is flat out rude, and this is something I have experienced on many breakfast visits. The staff are never the same, and the service is just flat out non existent and the worst I have had in Newtown.
It is also an absolutely filthy restaurant. I know there are water restrictions but a bucket of soapy water is desperately needed particularly to the shop front. The food is pretty good here, everything else is average.
Grotty little café that needs a good scrub, laid back staff? I call it lazy and staff that just could care less. It took about 25 minutes to get served in that tiny little place half empty, the waitress was nice enough but that’s the last we saw of her, a “kitchen staff” plonked our meals down and boy did that put us off.
My meal had absolutely no taste whatsoever and was stale, a crouton flew across the table as I tried to pick it up with my fork. The best part was my partner’s salad with gravy – Yes, his salad was covered in gravy, not just a little accidental dribble from his main but absolutely drizzled in the stuff, it was the oddest thing I have ever seen.
People around us seemed to be enjoying the desserts and I think that’s what this place should stick to, they looked yummy but we decided not to hang around in case the waffles came smothered in gravy too. I can’t figure out if they are not paying attention or if they just don’t care.
I love this place and am surprised by some of the reviews here. The staff seem to change regularly but I've always received friendly, laid-back, attentive service.
Desserts are to die for and come in huge portions that can only be shared. Perhaps the best hot chocolates in Sydney. Meals are slightly more hit and miss. I've had some yummy bean-oriented vego meals and tasty, unusual salads. My last meal though was the fish of the day which was bland but then coated in a decidedly odd mango-fusion salsa.
Extremely inexpensive. In fact, I'd prefer they charged a bit more and cooked using free range chicken and eggs.
We walked into this place and sat down. After waiting for ages, I went to the counter, there were three staff members standing around chatting. I was rudely told that someone would take our order. We waited for another ten minutes before leaving. What a joke, needless to say we won't be back.
I admit it - I'm a Corell's addict. Have been going there for years and just love it. The food is great, the atmosphere jumps out at you, and the service is fast and efficient. Nothing better than breakfast in the sun on Saturday morning on one of the outside tables watching Newtown's weird and wonderful walk by. There may be newer and more modern, but this place just has that 'something else' quality about. Newtown bohemia at its best.
On first impressions, this place seems to have an old and welcoming cosy feel- somewhere to stop and have a casual coffee and simple dessert... the experience, however was fairly poor. The kitchen and food prep area looked awful with a stale smell that greeted us as we ordered.
To top it off, there seemed to be no sense of welcome from the raging waitress who took order in the middle of the main counter area.... the table we sat at was still dirty and the waffles were overly creamy to compensate for the stale texture. Will not be back!
I eat at Corelli's fairly regularly about once a month, rotating around various places in Newtown. It's not a big place, and the tables can appear crammed at times, but the staff are all down to earth, no-nonsense and pleasant.
The food is good, generally and their specials are often worthwhile (I had a generously portioned ham, spinach and mozzarella quesadilla with salad, sour cream and chilli for just $7. The coffee is not outstanding but is reasonable, and everything is good value, especially if you have an Entertainment card, as they offer the standard 20% off the total bill up to $25, making an entire meal with drinks for two less than $24 today. The menu has a range of burgers, good all-day breakfasts, and specialist things like Grilled Haloumi, but also Fish, Steaks, and interesting soups. Recommend trying the Specials - they're often quite original.
It's not one of the glitzy places, and it's not somewhere I would take someone if I was trying to impress them, but I routinely take friends here because it's good, honest food, with good honest people. I keep on coming back, and I don't live in the Newtown area!
I have eaten here a few times now. Every time I come to Sydney I try and have a meal here. Great food, cheap food and nice staff. Couldn't ask for a better cafe.
I just recently moved to Newtown and I had heard all about the funky little cafe, Corelli's, near the Performing Arts School. Let me say, I was not disappointed! From the moment you step into the cafe, you embark on a journey of taste - taste of great food, taste of authentic bohemian atmosphere, and taste of great value! I am now addicted. Sometimes I even eat breakfast, lunch and dinner here in the same day! The waffles are to die for, the mud cake is glorious, and the mains are so big yet so delicious that you need to eat every last morsel even though you are completely full! Top marks in my books! I will be back again and again!
