‘Tiffin’ is an Indian and British term for a copper or stainless steel lunch box with 3 sections. The word became popular in British India, related to 'tiffing', a word defined in Francis Grose’s 1811 Dictionary meaning "light meal eaten during the day".

Copper Tiffin was recommended to me by a friend who used to live on Cleveland St. She loves it and used to go several times a week. It's now a favourite of mine as well.
The food is great, waiters are wonderful and it's extremely good value. I've eaten there on separate occasions with my sister, boyfriend and work friends. We always enjoy the experience.
Value superb, food sometimes fantastic sometimes some dishes arrive warm. Only bad thing is food delivery very slow. Waiters were always excellent. Speed up the kitchen output as it puts us of coming. The food has always been a long time coming on every single occasion we have been there. This is a pity as it takes the joy off the good food.
I've been to the Copper Tiffin 3 times now, and I have to say that each and every time has been an absolute delight. The waiters were always sweet, kind, profesional and ready with a smile so Kudos for you guys, keep up the good work.
The food was exquisite, and regardless what other reviewers say about the sizes of the portions, I think they are just perfect. Curry, naan, and rice it's about enough to stuff you like a chicken.
Restaurants are all about the surroundings, the aromas, the flavours, colours, how they make you feel. If you don't appreciate this and you happen to be more interested in the portions sizes, go to a foodcourt. This said, we absolutely recommend this restaurant and we are really looking foward to the next time. which coincidently it's tonight. See you guys there.
Great value during the week with the 50% off business with the mains, the service is great and the ambience is nice though a little bright as seems to be the way with Indian restaurants. Their curries were quiet good, really like the okra dishes and the paneer dishes. I am not a vego though and all the curries were good and we asked for extra spicy, my Mum who is anglo indian enjoyed the meal and it was BYO which is a bonus these days.. all in all an easy non- offensive dinner, much better food than the big one near by. I like the copper pans your curry comes in very nice touch! GOOD VALUE.
The name was quite weird the first time I heard it. I was in a second thought to give it a try cause it felt like fusion food place . But still I went ahead to give it a try
I would say that it is the only place that gives you the best value for money in Sydney.
The place is small but the food is excellent and the service is just great. The staff is very friendly and doesn't leave back any reasons why you should not appreciate . This is not my first visit to the place and I even did not know about this website till the time the staff from this restaurant informed me about it and asked me to give a genuine review. I really appreaciate the staff for this.
All I would say is the food is good, I and my family reallly love it and will be visiting the place very soon. The place gives you the value for money with the 50% disc I would say it always worth giving it a try.
It was a Sunday evening and an anniversary. My partner and I chose to dine at Copper Tiffin. Indian food is one of my greatest loves and with 50% off mains I was keen to try it out. I was not at all dissuaded by the reviews on this site where people state that the mains are small. I have eaten Indian food in many cities of many countries (sadly none of them India), so I know that it is not uncommon to have the meals served in small copper bowls, as the idea is to go for VARIETY of dishes.
This way, you get to try a variety of different tastes! We ordered 3 mains between us, with rice and naan each. We shared an entree... We left STUFFED and with enough for lunch taken away in a doggy bag. All for less than $35!! AMAZING value. I really love the decor in the restaurant, its tasteful, warm and inviting. The waitstaff are a bunch of sweet guys, and a candle on your table is lit for you as you are seated.
The over all lighting of the restaurant could be dimmer, to add to the intimacy. Now the guys are sweet and the food is served promptly, the gap between courses is spot on and everything is served at the right time, very important to me, but the staff were not attentive with us. We had a long wait to order, and then a long wait once we had asked for the bill, which also took us some time as they were not paying us a great deal of attention.
When we did manage to lure them, however, they were warm and gracious. We tried to tip them, saying $5 change is fine, but after we left we counted the money that had been returned to us and it was the full amount!! Hopefully when we return they don't curse us as the non-tippers!! Highly recommended.
I took a taxi to this place tonight to get some take-away. I ordered a selection of dishes for my flatmate and myself. When I got back home I was really angry because they managed to get all of my orders wrong!
I couldn't be bothered taking another taxi back to the place so we ended up eating what we got. The food was pretty lousy in fact, it’s probably the worst Indian food we've ever had!
I ordered takeaways from this restaurant based on recent reviews. It would have to be the worst butter chicken I have ever had. It even had the glad wrap still on the container - obviously having just microwaved what appeared to be reconstituted chicken which had been no where near a tandoor. Awful - Avoid
Response from Management:
We pride ourselves in our refreshingly fresh and different Indian cuisine, quite a unique offering in the Surry Hills area. We take every review on the website very seriously and improve on a day-to-day basis. So thank you for your feedback.
As these are the exact same wordings from you for the second time in the last 3 months, that means you have visited Copper Tiffin at least twice - thanks for that as well.
As per your review:
- We are not aware of any such thing as 'reconstituted' chicken;
- All take away food orders are individually cooked fresh and packed in the take-away containers, we Glad wrap the individual container to avoid any leakage of curries such as butter chicken. This ensures that the food reaches its destination intact.
We take great pride in our food quality and service. Next time you find the take away food unsatisfactory; please do not hesitate to bring it back to us for a 'No Questions Asked' replacement.
We look forward to your patronage and thanks once again for your (second) feedback.
Update: I have been to this restaurant twice since submitting my first review and I have to say that if the quality and value remain consistent, this will become the best Indian restaurant in Sydney. Okay, there may be the odd Indian restaurant that has a couple of outstanding dishes but they will probably be expecting around $18 for a chicken curry, and that is the problem! Curry is not an expensive dish to prepare, the gravy is almost always made in large batches and the meats are most often pre-cooked (boiled lamb / beef, or leftover chicken tikka). So it’s not time consuming for the chef to put together multiple curries, just dish out the meat, add the meat and that’s it. No wok, no delicate slicing, nothing, just the right blend of spices in a good curry sauce and that’s it. So why are the mains at many other Indian restaurants getting expensive? Simple, Indian is becoming more popular over here and why not rip-off the punters.
This is where Copper Tiffin stands out, in its value. The mains are half price except on Saturday night. They probably only break even at that rate, but with the mains at such a reasonable price and of such good quality, people buy more, they eat more entrees and visit more often. In fact if I lived closer than the 35km I do from this place I would be there at least twice a week. This is what sets them apart, they have gone out on a limb and offered their food at a great price without compromising quantity or quality and word is getting around. They only have to maintain that consistency and they will have a reputation that people will travel for. True curry lovers go for the food, not the price or décor. I would much rather pay $5 for a good curry and eat it in my car than pay $20 for the same thing and sit amongst pretenders.
Service is okay, a bit slow, but you have to remember that you’re not paying for service because at the prices they charge you would walk to the kitchen yourself! I highly recommend this place because even large groups can fill themselves up and leave plenty left over for some nice wines. You will also notice that this isn’t my first review so it will be obvious that I’m not writing this on behalf of the owners or against them on behalf of another restaurant. If only they opened for lunch during the week, because at the moment Sydney has virtually no Indian restaurants open at lunch except the from the jar north Indian diner style places. Hang in there Copper Tiffin, you are on a winner.
Previous review: I had no idea that the mains were half price when I went there with a mate, so when the bill came and it was about $25 for both of us, I thought they had made a mistake so I left a very generous tip and left, realising after seeing the sign on the window on the way out that the mains were 50% off!
Okay, so the servings aren't huge and the Lamb Balti isn't really exciting and hot isn't hot even when you get them to add more chilli a second time, BUT, the chicken tikka masala is excellent and the naans are great, they bring water without asking and the food was presented well.
I will absolutely be going back there so that I can try every dish on the menu, because you can when it is that reasonably priced. A very good tactic considering the competition in the area and it has won me over. Highly recommended, a great value, clean and friendly restaurant with fast and pleasant service. I'm hungry just thinking about it.
