Love the renovation & I had an excellent seafood noodle there a while back. Always seems nice & relaxed. The staff are friendly & I've gone back several times since for a drink when I haven't had time for a meal. Would eat there again though.
The food is mediocre, we found the barramundi to be over cooked and dry. The renovations are great, however, its a pity smoking is still permitted in an area where customers eat.
I've been to Coopers several times for a few drinks downstairs though last week, 4 of us made a last minute decision to pop in for a bite to eat upstairs. We shared a mezze plate which is made for two but was massive. It had delicious dips, flat bread, fried haloumi, kebabs, marinated veges etc etc... it was all snapped up so quickly!
We also shared a dozen of oysters done 3 ways, natural, kilpatrick and fried, heaven! They were plump, fresh pacific oysters and were so fresh, surprisingly so for a pub. They were so tasty that we had to order another dozen. Decor is warm and inviting and the service was quick and friendly. It was a quiet weeknight so we were able to enjoy a cosy dinner on the banquettes, will definitely be back.
We went for a friend's birthday dinner on a Tuesday night and the place was still pretty full. We were seated upstairs in the undercover beer garden area and the only downfall of this area is that it is still a smoking area although food is served. Apart from that the renovations are great and it certainly attracts a different clientele upstairs than downstairs. The meals were great, a little more expensive than your usual pub grub and definitely more gourmet that your usual chips and gravy affair. An extensive list from gourmet pizza, pasta, Asian cuisines, fish and seafood and vegetarian selections
We ordered a variety of meals including the Caesar salad, the Cajun chicken burger, with salad and fries, the Steak sandwich which came with sweet potato wedges and a Rump steak with pepper corn sauce and fries. All the meals were a great size with side salads or chips. The steak whilst ordered medium rare, came out more like well done and didn’t taste like the best cut of meat for $20. Then again, you are at a pub. It's pretty much self service with ordering at the counter and grabbing your own culterly and number.
Will probably be back to try some of the other meals and maybe sit inside away from the smoke next time.
Good pub grub! This place has a nice feel - an extensive blackboard menu, so none of that same old. The portions are huge, so be careful what you order! Make room for other courses ... i.e pace yourself.
The dining room can be busy on Thursday through to Sunday, and so can be very noisy. The room is next to the open air smoking section (when is smoking going to be banned in public places?), which doesn't have any effect on the food, but adds to the busyness of the place.
Service is good (you order at the bar, but table clearance is good and done in a friendly manner). Value? This is very good quality pub food and very affordable.
Excellent seafood platter for two! Fresh oysters, BBQ prawns & scallops, grilled swordfish, spicy callamari, avocado & fresh prawns, lobster in herb butter, Thai prawn wantons, fish & big chips and a great salad! Bargain at $48!!! Highly recommended!
I went there for dinner on saturday night with my best friend, and had great food and drinks there. We were only stopping by to eat before a show, but it was good. I had the roast pumpkin and rosemary risotto, and it was delicious, maybe a TINY bit runny, but it came out really quickly which was great for us. Drinks reasonably priced, friendly and fast service, will definitely go back again.
A great feed in Newtown! The food here is excellent since they opened last year. You can't go past the Soft Shell Crab which is the chef's speciality. Nice and cripsy with a beautiful Asian salad - highly recommended but anything here is great.
I had SSC at a Thai place on King St recently and it was soggy and tasteless.
The Creme Broulee is heaven and a perfect ending to a great meal. The atmosphere is great although on really busy nights it's uncomfortable and too noisy.
Service is generally good depending on the person - a bit too much attitude from one or two for my liking. Can't beat the Sunday roast for $12 anywhere else in Sydney.
My partner had the crab, great. I had a roast chicken dish that was not so good, dry chicken and average sides. No gravy, not as good as similar dish that would be cheaper at local chicken shop. Next time we'll both go the crab. Upstairs is a nice spot.
We go to the Coopers about once a week for dinner or drinks with friends. The food is always excellent. The squid salad I had last night was divine. The wine is well priced, as is the food. Great atmosphere in the bar upstairs, it has fast become my favourite local.
