I used to be a regular patron of Concrete Cafe before it changed hands in 2009. Since then it has been a huge disappointment each visit.
Service is generally slow and when your order eventually arrives is not uncommon to receive the completely wrong order, or to find sugar has been added to your coffee when you expressly asked for none. The quality of the coffees has taken a noticeable turn for the worst and the hideous decor, coupled with the awful sound of metal leg chairs scraping on bare concrete floors and the incredible noise levels inside created by sound continually bouncing off hard surfaces makes the whole experience a rather unpleasant one.
On the whole I strongly dislike the changes that have been made to the menu, one thing I can commend them for is retaining the chicken and walnut sandwich.
I had chorizo scrambled eggs for breakfast just two days ago and the eggs were oily and cheesy. The chorizo was shredded like some sort of pizza topping. Very second rate for a place that I see as being quite busy in a tourist precint. I'm a local and don't think I would go back in a hurry.
I went here for Italian fried eggs and they were absolutely delicious. Excellent portion sizes and certainly cant' complain, wasn't hungry until very late in the evening! Chai latte was perfect frothiness too. Get a seat early as this place fills up. Could do with a few more magazines for their staff to read but that is the only criticism.
The good: Great coffee – Karmee brand. Creamy, smooth, full of flavour. Great food. Love their pasta. Garlic bread is smothered in butter and fresh garlic. I always enjoy the pancakes with soaked strawberries for dessert. Roast pumpkin and haloumi cheese toasted sandwich is another favourite. Mint tea (made with fresh mint) is lovely if you can’t take coffee. Wait staff are normally efficient, friendly and remember you and your order after only a couple of visits.
The bad: Servings are a little small. Traffic noise can get a little loud.
Overall: One of our favourite places for brunch or lunch. It’s always packed.
Unlike most diners we went here for lunch on a friday. It's a wonderful spot to while away the hours in the sun, but I was disappointed with my salad of roast pork, rocket, chat potatoes and onion rings. I know, it sounds weird and it was weird. Would go back but would probably stick to something less exotic. The crab linguine was good apparently.
Not as good as I had hoped for. Had brunch on the weekend, coffee was quite good. Baked egg and chorizo was a bit bland and dry. One of the other egg based dish had bacon, corn and other ingredients which overpowered each other and didn't really work well.
Great food (best breakfast in Sydney imo), the works breakfast is always a good introduction. My personal favourite is the Pumpkin Goats Cheese Spinach and pine nut Fettuccini, very tasty.
Fresh juices are great. Very fresh and a wonderful start to a day. I've been here at least 10 times and have never been disappointed. Recommended for anyone that likes good food. Prices are (imo) fitting. You DO get what you pay for.
Good menu selection, interesting variations and great value compared to so many breakfast places around Sydney. The leek & goats cheese scrambled eggs are great and a huge serving.
Pleasant, unobtrusive, but lacking in wow factor. I tried the Italian fried eggs as recommended by a previous reviewer - different, but I don't think I'll go for it again. It's not that is wasn't good - it was fine but I was looking to try something new and it didn't really hit the spot. Maybe good for you though!?
My companions had very nice breakfasts. On the whole, not bad but there's better about.
