We ate here on Saturday nite. I had the pan fried Barra, which was quite good. One of us also had the fish n chips. Pretty damn good. The (cooking) oil seemed pretty fresh too. I dunno what the go is with the previous reviews, they either were very unlucky or there is new catering. The service was fast and friendly too. Its not the flashiest pub in Balmain, but I don't think it wants to be anyways..
There 'was' new hope for this place under the Owners, with a new menu, new staff and a fresh approach to family eating. The first time we went a few months ago it was great. The menu was simple and had some nice traditional options for pub food including the 1kg pot of mussels with three optional styles.
Unfortunately, we have been three times since and it has been progressively worse each time. The menu is the same but the quality of the cooking has become disgraceful. The mussels were way overcooked and the risotto included gluggy re-heated chicken pieces. To top it off the chips came greasy and tasting of old frying oil.
For a pub they could also look adding some decent wines to the menu. This place has such great potential but, unfortunately, it keeps slipping back to poor standards of food. We will not be returning.
This joint seems to have new faces, new manager. New girl doing a tuesday trivia night. I got treated pretty politely. Have not had a feed yet, wine list looks cheapish but I was on the schooners .
Thoroughly disappointing. The courtyard was in a filthy mess overflowing with dirty ashtrays and glasses and it was only 6:30 pm. We moved inside to get away from it all only to have the overpowering stench of bleach waft past us every time someone opened the toilet door, YUCK! Food was below average.
As a local of East Balmain, I would really enjoy being able to visit my local, however, this enjoyment is overwhelmingly marred by the poor food, stodgy, fatty, uninteresting, the filthy state of the courtyard, where tables are not wiped down, ashtrays left unemptied; glasses not collected, paved area not kept clean and overgrown, garden.
An outdoor chair had been thrown up onto the brick wall and had not been retrieved. It is such a shame that the character and charm of 'the local' should be ruined by uncaring and inattentive staff who seem to enjoy hanging out the front having a smoke. Commercial, clean up the place and employ a better kitchen staff.
I hate to say this about my local pub but feel I must as would love to see improvement made. Firstly the staff are very good and drinks are reasonable but the food is fatty and stodgy and worst of all the whole of the lounge area smells like a public toilet, everytime someone goes in or out of the toilet the smell comes drifting into where people are sitting trying to enjoy a drink or worst eating their meal, what a turn off, come on hotel owners surely you can get the ventilation right in the toilets and please try to improve on the food, how about quality ingredients as it is everything tastes the same.
IF you want good Aussie pub food, then this place is for you. The place is full of locals and is friendly and warm place to eat or drink. The food servings are huge and very cheap, steak for instance is around $15, there is schniztel and hamburgers. Food is ok, but its a bit stodgey for my liking.
There is jazz on a Saturday night to. Good place if you want a quite drink and a cheap night out.
The old Commercial has indeed been renovated. I went there recently after nearly 2 years (I've been away), sadly it has fallen victim to the scourge known as "modern pub decor"... streamlined walls and fancy downlights everywhere, this classic little oasis, once such a 'home away from home' now feels so sterile and bland. Gone are the lounges and the library. Gone are the characters at the front bar. Indeed, the entire front bar has gone! When I asked one of the staff where had our old pub gone, he too admitted that the new atmosphere was very bland. However, on a much brighter note, the food here is now very well priced and I can highly recommend for choice, quality and cost. Average main is about $15 and of a good size. This is a good little pub for those trying it for the first time. For us old timers, we'll just have to remember the good old days.
Don't listen to any of the old reviews as the pub has recently been renovated and is now very cosy and plenty of plasma screens to catch the news or latest sporting events. Also on Thursday nights they have an Australian Poker League event with $50/$25 vouchers for 1st and 2nd and $100 cash draw for players who buy drinks during the night.
Ok - but only if you have low expectations for this pub as full of drunk old balmain locals, sticky carpet, pokies, smoke etc. bar food is good - don't bother with the restaurant out the back.
