This venue had that speak easy vibe written all over it. The knowledgeable staff a great range of classic and signature cocktails, quality products. I wonder what happened. Oh well.
A great bar with great drinks and fantastic staff - let down by its complete emptiness.
If they dropped their prices and increased their activities for a while to get more regulars, this place would be a hit. Getting into the downstairs bar itself lends an air of mystery as you walk through well-decorated corridors and past pieces of art. The interior is well-designed with the name going straight to the decor, as one would expect.
Drinks-wise, the assortment was excellent with an imaginative mind behind the cocktails and mixes. The Gin came with something special - and a kitsch book to describe the background (albeit with dubious reliability). A slice of cucumber as the stirrer, and I was sold.
The staff are, as mentioned above, excellent in both manner and ability. Friendly and warm, they charmed our socks off and made drink recommendations - a brave but important point in a good bar person.
Indeed the only detraction is the emptiness of the place that makes it permanently feel like closing time. There on a Thursday night, the hollow void rang loudly - especially when the music accidentally stopped playing. The staff at first tried to convince us that it was just early, but eventually relented to the fact that it's quiet unless their weekly cabaret event it on.
My suggestion is to visit and stay for just one drink. If it doesn't improve, then come back on cabaret night. This place has all the makings of a star attraction - just add patrons.
I went there on a Thursday night around 6pm. Thinking it would be crowded we walked down the stairs to find...no one. We were the only two people there for 1.5 hours. Its such a gorgeous underground space - sandstone, crystal lighting etc but I think no one in Sydney has a clue that it is there. What a shame.
