I have eaten here a number of times. The food is excellent and the staff are good but the old trout who works the till is really annoying and I won't be returning any time soon.
I absolutely loved all the food at Clove and I have been back on several occasions. The food is so consistent and has great flavours. The prawn korma is amazing and is a huge favorite of mine and even when you know you are going to be bursting at the seams you cannot avoid ordering a garlic naan, Mmmmmm! The service can bit a hit or miss, I think mainly due to the language barrier but this really isn't a major problem, the owner is always wandering around and taking orders and this really nice to get his recommendations. The best indian in town I reckon!
We were recommended this place by a pommie mate. They told us that it was the best indian in Sydney and I must agree. Meat was excellent quality and curries were all superb. If you like "pommie style" indians, this is the place to go. I read some complaints about the service on here but I don't go to restaurants for good service. I go for good food and this is exactly what we got. I'll be a regular from now on. Fantastic!
I've been here quite a few times (maybe 10-15?). There's loads of yummy vegetarian options and every single one that I have tried has been really good.
None of the dishes are oily like you'd get in some other Indian retaurants. This is probably the best Indian I've had in the city area and it's consistently good. The service is pretty good, the waiters come over regularly to check that you're happy and to re-fill your water and wine glasses. Highly recommended.
It's the Canberra lad back to tell you that I had dinner at this restaurant on Saturday 25 April. Here's what I think.
The food is quite good and clearly the kitchen staff is talented. I chose aloo chop as my entree and it was something like a potato croquette, far too fiddly to make at home. Very tasty with its mint sauce. Then chilli lamb with Peshawari Naan and some pullau rice. All washed down with a pretty good mango lassi. The lamb was spicy and wonderfully tender-someone in the kitchen really knows his stuff. The Naan was fine, but not especially outstanding.
Service was okay. Here are my thoughts, it took a long time for the lassi to arrive, almost when I was halfway through my entree, a shame because it was a wonderful lassi, quite different from the good, but sort of mass-produced, drink you tend to get elsewhere. This restaurant is trying to push the Kingfisher Indian beer from some reason because I and other diners were all asked if we wanted some.
The restaurant opened for dinner at 5:30, but for at least 45 minutes after that they still had track-suited staff walking though the dining room with buckets of this and that for the kitchen-not a good look and one that I don't think would be tolerated in a fine French restaurant. Way before my entree was ready, a small bowl of tasty mint sauce was put on my table without any explanation as to what it was for.
Happily, it went well with the aloo chop, but a little explanation would have been welcome. I was asked if I wanted some more pappadums (I was given some free to start with) and when I asked for two more was told that the minimum order is four, so gave it a miss. I couldn't finish my dinner so requested that it be placed in a container to take home. Extra charge there-$1. And the Peshawari Naan was placed (neatly) in its basket, but in such a way that once you took a piece the sweet stuffing fell out.
However, I really enjoyed my meal at this fine restaurant and hope to return the next time I visit Sydney. I think they have a very talented kitchen staff, but need to work on the service and presentation side of the business. Afterwards I dropped into Jaipur Sweets nearby for a masala tea and it was pretty good. And hello again to the lovely lady I chatted with at the Oxford Street supermarket late on Saturday afternoon, it's your admirer from a few weeks ago making this report.
Best curry house in Sydney. We are from the UK and love indian curries and have really struggled finding a good curry restaurant, but this is it! I have now been 4 times and the food has always been superb. The lamb is always tender and all the dishes are full of flavour. Definitely give it a try.
We stumbled upon this place while trawling through Darlinghurst on a quiet Saturday night. The Clove is just off Oxford Street, in busy Crown Street but we were easily able to get a table at around 8.00 pm. The place was about half full. The wooden tables are small and cramped, but well spaced out, so noise is not a problem. Ambience is pleasant and relaxed, despite the location.
Four of us dined and the bill came to a $115. For that we got two shared starters, vegetable samosas and vegetable pakoras, four mains, rice and two servings of naan bread. We brought our own wine and were charged a hefty $3.50 per person corkage, but Clove is licensed and byo of course.
The food is fresh and tasty and served in generous portions in nice little silver pots. The samosa starters were delicately flavoured without being too doughy. My beef Bombay ($15.90) was deliciously aromatic and the meat tender and full of flavour. The vegetarian dishes were a little bland but the lamb shanks went down well.
I’d say that this place has been around awhile as it’s professionally run with quick and efficient service. It’s when you descend a flight of stairs to the toilets that you get a sense of just how long this restaurant has probably been here. The toilet doors and handles are black with grease and grime and look like they’ve never been cleaned and the walls are covered with graffiti. There are no handtowels and the dryer doesn’t work. This spoiled what otherwise would have been a pleasant dining experience.
After realising the Mad mex down the road was not a restaurant that could seat 30 people, we walked up to the Host and asked if we could get a table for 30 and they were only too happy for us to dine there.
Food was great! Service was ok as it took 45 minutes for the entree's to come out (we ordered the banquet @ $32.99 per head) but we did have papadums and various dips (mango chutney, mango pickle and the mint sauce). After the entrees had come thru the main soon followed there after.
Their chicken Tikka was excellent, it was moist and tender and full of flavour. The curries were great and yeah I will definitely be back there again.
Best Indian Food since a long time. Food very tasty and not greasy. Lamb shunks were super tender. The breads are beautiful. Service was very fast and attentive. Toilets clean. To sum it up: highly recommended for an indian night out. And the best unlike with other nights out, that we all fell great even the next day.
We went here based on one of the reports saying that it was "like a british style curry". it was. Fantastic flavors and the murgh makhani was to die for. The best korma I've had for years and the lamb balti (as someone else pointed out) was quality meat. All in all a great place and we'll be going back. Oh yeah I agree the toilets are dirty though.
