Having lived in NY and London I'm quite spoiled about Indian Food. The Clove is living up to almost any Indian Restaurant I have been too. We have been there several times and the food was always very tasty without being to oily. The spices are very fresh and the curries are just delicious. Same for the meat with the tender lamb being my favourite. You just feel great after a dinner there, even hours after.
Ambiente is ok, although a bit noisy. The service is good and attentive. Certainly my favourite Indian Restaurant in town!
I was introduced to the Clove by an English friend whose mum was a chef in a high end Indian restaurant in England. I'm a passionate curry eater, so passionate I refuse to order/eat butter chicken.
The Clove has exceptional service, the old church surroundings give an unmatched ambience. Most importantly, and the reason I return to the Clove (or any restaurant for that manner) is for the food, and its authentic herbs, and quality trimmed meats that are always tender. As an example the chicken dishes is of breast only and cooked to succulent perfection. The goat has no goat odour, indicating hand picked quality by the owner of young goat only.
None of the dishes are oily, and the herbs within the sauces leave one of the most memorable Indian flavours to the palette I've ever had in Sydney. If you ever find yourself in the Clove and are unsure what to eat, the owner is always willing to customise a dish, a positive point for those with special dietary needs.
Highly recommended for any curry eater, a must for those seeking to expand their curry horizons, and not to be missed by any curry snob!
One of the best Indian restaurants I've been to in Australia. The food was fantastic. The Balti was just like an English (indian!) one. Quality of the meat was excellent and the staff were friendly. This place was recommended to us by another pommie mate and I'm glad we went there. I'll be a regular from now on. Excellent!
The service was quick, friendly and personable. I have read the other reviews and thankfully the woman staff member mentioned in other reviews was no where to be seen. The male manager/owner (not sure who he was) came over and asked us if we enjoyed the meal, and we replied honestly - yes! The food was yummy, and very filling. The atmosphere was friendly and cosy in a renovated church. I would recommend the clove for sure and will go back.
I have eating been at the Clove for many years returned last night after a long absence. The food was still good however the service was awful. The place was pretty empty and we were harassed by 3 waiters within 5 minutes of being seated pressure to order alcohol, extra pappadums and raitas etc. I asked to take away my left over food and was informed that would cost me $1 for the container. Finally when we paid our bill they didn't bother to bring the $5 change back, when we questioned them they argued there was no change and finally gave us our $5 change in silver. I will not be back, there are too many other good Indian places to patronise.
Last night, myself and a group of 13 friends decided we'd try out The Clove, as it had been highly recommended as one of the best Indian Curry houses in Sydney. It was a celebratory affair, for the citizenship celebration of one of our wonderful friends.
So I guess I can start with the quality of the food, because quite frankly, it is the only thing I can commend The Clove on. As Indian food goes, the flavours were excellent. Now to the reason I have been compelled to write this review. The service is appalling. The absolute worst I have experienced in Sydney.
The moment we got there we realised the layout of the long table had the individual seated in middle actually opposite a pillar, thus dividing the table in two essentially. We requested we move the table down, to ensure we were not a group divided in two, and actually came up with solutions and suggestions for the service staff, but they were having none of it, and the seating planned remained.
The poppadums flowed from the moment we sat down, we thought 'wow this is a great start' but at the end of the night, it came to light we were charged for every basket that came out. We ate $30 worth of poppadums, we enjoyed them, but when they are continuously replenished, the instinct is to keep poppadum loading.
We decided upon the $32.90 banquet for the table, as it offered a variety of the popular dishes. There was just enough for all, however, when we got the bill, we had been charged for the original number of 14 (one cancelled last minute), and informed we had been served for a table of 14. This was frustrating on principle, 13 people eating was generous group, after all we filled 1/3 of the restaurant.
They tried to charge us for corkage for 14 people, even though there were 13 of us, and only 6 had wine, the rest had to make do with wine glasses for their water, which came out of the one jug on the table. I must add, the non wine drinkers bought beer and lassi.
We are a group that eats often together, and are more than happy to pay for a good meal with reasonable service, but due to the questions around the bill, we had to query it. This met with much debate, and resulted in them deducting corkage for the 7 that didn't drink wine, but the charge for 14 and $30 poppadums remained the same. The staff didn't seem to understand the issues, or didn't want to, and informed us that 'they didn't mind if we didn't leave a tip', probably cause they didn't get it. So we didn't.
Bottom line, this restaurant has good Indian food, but if you are after nice pleasant service, reasonable and honestly priced, and some ambience, please do not go to The Clove. There are far too many other quality restaurants in Sydney to spend your cash at and enjoy with your friends and family.
The food was good and we have the attention of the wait staff because we're sitting close to the bar but the management (especially the woman sitting beside the bar with her back towards us, that might be one of the senior staff...) was awful. When we order the bill, because the original reservation was for 14 but a friend couldn't make, we had to pay for a ghost that didn't eat and for 10 serves of papadams, just because the senior staff decide to keep bringing it instead of telling us that those weren't complimentary from the restaurant, once we got there and a few pieces were at the table already.
When confronted, the woman decide to ignores us, put us to discuss with the other guy and the waiters and in the end we left paying 45 bucks for food we didn't have and papadams that were not even that good. Awful service! Shame on them. Will never go back.
I absolutely loved all the food at Clove and I have been back on several occasions. The food is so consistent and has great flavours. The prawn korma is amazing and is a huge favorite of mine and even when you know you are going to be bursting at the seams you cannot avoid ordering a garlic naan, Mmmmmm! The service can bit a hit or miss, I think mainly due to the language barrier but this really isn't a major problem, the owner is always wandering around and taking orders and this really nice to get his recommendations. The best indian in town I reckon!
We were recommended this place by a pommie mate. They told us that it was the best indian in Sydney and I must agree. Meat was excellent quality and curries were all superb. If you like "pommie style" indians, this is the place to go. I read some complaints about the service on here but I don't go to restaurants for good service. I go for good food and this is exactly what we got. I'll be a regular from now on. Fantastic!
