The steamed black mussels in garlic, chilli and tomato are worth a visit alone. Pizza and pasta's are pretty good also [I quite often order the filetto pizza which has fresh tomato, rocket, prosciutto and parmesan]. The lamb shanks are pretty good also if they have them on the specials list. The only thing that lets this place down is the service, while we have never had any particularly bad service, it is sometimes clumsy and a bit haphazard. I do like, however, the fact that they give you an ice bucket even with byo wines. One of the better venues on King st.
We stumbled in here by accident, it was the nearest restaurant that wasn’t packed at the time and we have no idea why because this has to be the best Italian I have ever eaten. We ended up going way over our budget because it was just too yummy and the cocktails were great too, can’t wait to bring friends here. It’s become a regular for us and even the take away never disappoints us.
Very disappointing. The service was dreadful with rude and inattentive waitresses who made us feel uncomfortable and unwelcome. Instead of providing a jug of water to go with the meal, we were given a bottle of expensive still water which was opened before we had a chance to send it back. We were not asked at any point if we wanted any more wine and were rushed throughout the entire meal.
The mains came out about 5 mins after we finished the starters, and seeing as 2 of us ordered risotto, that was not a good sign, suggesting the risotto was pre-made. Based on the taste, they certainly seemed pre-made. I ordered a wild mushroom risotto - which turned out to be a 'button mushroom' risotto that had the texture of old glue and it was absolutely flavourless.
My friend ordered the seafood risotto which fared just as badly. The mussels that she put in a bowl to eat separately were taken away from her within 2 minutes, despite the fact that she has not even made a dent in the mussels. After the meal, we were not asked if we wanted any coffee. Instead we were made to sit there for about 20 minutes with nothing but an empty table and a glass of water.
Not one of the waitresses acknowedged our existence until I finally had enough and asked for the bill. Even after we paid and were leaving, the especially grumpy waitress who was clearing our table did not say goodnight or smile... just continued scowling. Very disappointed, I would not recommend this place at all.
I ate their the other night without a booking and the place was pumping
But they still managed to get us a table we were given some olives and bread complementary and the barman made us some cocktails, which were spot on
Waitress was very efficient and friendly although she didn’t have a lot of time. They were pretty busy food was great, I had the hot pot, which was fantastic, and my girl friend had the eye fillet, which was melt in the mouth. The place is buzzing. I think over all, the price with the quality food they are serving you can’t beat it. Best steak in Newtown by far.
Terrible ambience, Awful service by that stage I wasn't enjoying the food, so any price made the value Dreadful, possibly the worst dining expirence I have had.
The wait staff were less than friendly. Food was average for the price. I had the seafood hotpot. About 5 minutes into the meal I asked about the bread. The grumpy waitress bought me a burnt piece of toasted herb bread. My partner had the veal, portion size was small and tasteless. This place is nothing to rave about. Will not be back.
1st time diner with 5 other girl friends, we were celebrating, but after all I had read I THOUGHT it was a nice place to try.
FOOD - My Chicken pasta was dripping of oil and the pizzas are missing that woodfire oven flare and the rest of the dishes were nice but for Newtown and other restaurants near by, its mediocre.
The SERVICE was ok, we had champange which in celebration the waitress 'popped' for us, then the senior staff yelled at her for doing so, making us feel awkward. The other staff didn't announce our food as it came just plonked (with a smile) in front of us, staff have this efficient pleasant feel (great for corporate, but they don't do lunch) but no warmth or friendliness, and the acoustics were terrible I felt like I was yelling at my friends all night.
VALUE for money... being in the middle of Newtown, poor.
Overall experience was "Ok", nothing memorable and there are Plenty of other (better) italian restaurants, sorry, I won't be going back. Disappointed.
It's probably not the cheapest Italian in town, but consider the cut-above-rest service, fresh seafood sourced and freshly made pizzas make this place an absolute gem in the Italian eatery world. Leichhardt eat your heart out. Make sure you do not miss out on the chargrilled calamari which is one of the best I have tasted in Sydney. Bravo!
I have visited Cicciolina about 5 times over the last year, twice in the last 2 weeks, it is currently my favourite Italian restaurant on King Street. The food is pretty good at a decent price and the service staff are probably a cut above some of the other places in the area.
I guess my only gripes with the place is that it can get very loud in there even when the place is only half full. If you go on a weekend when the place is packed out, you have to scream across your table to have a conversation. Secondly who charges $3 corkage per person at your table? I found that a bit rich, if you have over 4 in your party it is cheaper to buy something off their wine list.
