Well I should have read the reviews before I took my partner out to this place for dinner, being an old local I had dined here several times when the Mex at Nite theme first started (2007), the food (Mole) and service were always brilliant, best Mex I had eaten for sometime in Syd.
Having recently returned from an O/S posting I was keen to hit this spot for a fix of good mexi but was disappointed to notice the original folks (Tito and Pat from what I read in the other reviews) weren't running the night anymore, needless to say the food wasn't a patch on the wonderful food I remembered before I left town.
However, fyi and many thanks to a good mate (amigo!) of mine I've just learned that those original Mexican by Night folks are back in Newtown!, supposedly at a new place at the very top of King St. Definitely gonna have to hunt that joint down.
Oh and as for the review of the Dog, as I said, food was nothing to write home about, service was ok but not a patch on what the original gang had going there. Let me track down Tito and Pat, I need that Mole!
I had been looking forward to coming to this restaurant for a long time, the ambience and lighting did not disappoint and the staff were attentive and brought the meals out in a very timely manner. Choosing 2 vegetarian bean based meals was a big mistake. The filling was solely refried beans and cheese with no attempt at flavour. On my way back from the toilet through the kitchen I was surprised not to see old el paso packets lining the shelves. I won't be coming back here in a hurry.
Disgusting food, rude service and over priced. We wanted to run a mile (without paying) after receiving what seems to pass as 'food' to these people. We caught the chef returning from the toilet without washing his hands. Yeww!
I have been following this thread for a while and keen to try this restaurant for myself expecting a complete disaster of an experience. Of all occasions to risk, it was my partners birthday, talk about rolling the dice! Just to summarise, I was completely and utterly impressed. In my opinion this little mexican restaurant is better than Newtons Cocina both quality and value wise.
Let me explain further. We brought our bottle of wine and we were seated at a nice table (not even the one they had reserved for us, they could see we weren't happy so suggested we could chose from a few others, nice observation). They cracked the bottle for us, and brought over two nice wine glasses. The atmosphere was quite mexican and did the job nicely. Nothing too tacky, just some subtle decorations etc.
My partner and I were impressed to find wine glasses after hearing the stories on this thread of being given tumblers to drink wine out of etc. We were a little concerned they didn't provide us with a wine cooler for our bottle, but after we asked if they had one (expecting to hear them say no) the young man serving us said 'I'll just go check' and came back promptly with a cooler and filled it with ice for us.
After about 40 minutes I noticed a couple who got there just after us were being served their mains and we thought 'here we go, let the disasters begin'. But bang on cue the next thing to come out of kitchen was our entree, disaster no more.
For entree we simply ordered a chilli based dip and corn chips which was quite tasty and a good amount of chilli. No problems with helping size, was if anything a little more than we needed (1 dish shared between two). Large amount of dip and lots of corn chips.
Feeling like a test we requested some extra 'hot chilli chopped up in a dish, or hot chilli paste'. They came out with a small dish full of chopped Jalapeno's. Not exactly the killer heat we were hoping for but it showed intent to please and we enjoyed dipping them in the sauce once the corn-chips ran out.
So far so good. Determined to give this place the full workover, we ordered 3 of the mains to share between us, the beef burrito, chicken enchaladas and the infamous mole poblamo.
The beef burrito was a large helping size with salad and rice. The rice seemed to have some flavour/spice mixed in with it, the burrito was very tasty and had nice shredded beef in it contrary to the stories mentioned here. The cheese was well grilled and overall was a very tasty dish.
The chicken enchalada filling came out on the sizzling hotplate with wooden base and caught me completely by surprise. It appeared to be very similar in appearance to Newtons cocina enchalada and was also acommpanied with guacamole, sour cream and a salsa. We rolled our own and were completely blown away by the flavour of the chicken. It had a rich smoky texture and was possibly one of the best mexican dishes we have ever tasted, period!
The mole poblamo, well what can I say. I was expecting some badly cooked chicken with a box of cadbury roses chocolates melted over the top (if these reviews were anything to go by). As the dish was placed in front of me, I was amazed at how good it looked. Well presented with sesame seeds on the sauce and a small helping of rice and salad. I had to try it straight away so I promptly broke away a piece of the thigh chicken meat and it flaked away, the chocolate sauce ran down to cover the hole and after adding a bit of rice proceeded to consume it.
No over-sweet chocolate here, it was more of a cocoa-gravy with spices and was fantastic! I could have easily had this main on its own without getting over the sauce. I now understand why all the fuss over this traditional mexican dish. Overall, the experience was a complete surprise. I'm not sure if the place has changed owners again but there wasn't a female staff member in sight, the chef/ kitchen was visible to the main restaurant and there was plenty of fire and sizzling dish tossing going on in there, a far cry from the defrosted old el paso and microwave action people were referring to here.
The manager was a nice man and the waiter was a young man, possibly of mexican origin who seemed in-experienced but capable and got everything right. What I expected to be a horrific dining experience and one for the amusing stories book, turned out to be one of, if not the best mexican food we have ever tasted. And all for only 67 dollars where at Newtons cocina we have been known to go over 100 dollars for two people. Highly recommend the new and improved chocolate dog mexican!
I picked up takeaway tonight, the first time since it changed hands, and it was not nice at all. I got a bean tostada, and the beans were flavourless and dry, just like they'd gone from the pressure cooker to the food processor, and then to the plate, without any added spices. I make far better Mexican at home! I used to love the Mexican at the Chocolate Dog, but not any more. Not nice, not recommended, and overpriced.
I am not too sure how anyone below has been able to give a positive rating. Unless you are on a supermodel diet and love bland food then don't bother.
It all started going down hill after I asked the waitress if we could have some tacos (without looking at the menu) and she asked me what a taco was. After realising that she was not joking I had a look at the menu and saw that they weren't on there and ordered some Nachos for entree and the mole poblano for main.
The nachos are the smallest serving I have ever received. No worries about leaving room for the main meal there. Add to that a lack of flavour and I was off to a really bad start. The mole poblano that arrived was nothing like I have ever been served. It looked like think gluggy gravox and tasted pretty much the same. The fajitas were bland and the burritos only got an OK.
Unfortunately we must have had a bad night as a group of friends and I had a bad experience here. In short, the service was very average with our main meal coming about 45mns after our starter. When it did finally arrive, my nachos had about a teaspoon of guacamole and sour cream on top of it. It was that noticably small that others at the table laughed at it.
Upon mentioning the extremely small size to the waitress, she laughed and said that the nachos was big enough to warrant small side servings (?!). Asking again for more she said "ok I will order you more as a side order" and she started writing it on the bill!
A conversation followed which ended up with us receiving a free serving, but still, after a 45mn wait the least they could do was give us a bowl of guac and no arguments. The food in general was good, but nothing overly special. Best Mexican in the city? Not for me.
The meals were large and tasty. They are very filling. We all enjoyed our meals but I do have to say my tequilla prawns were not as good as they used to be. I just realised after reading the reviews that it has changed hands from the lovely lady who used to run it. Service was ok in general.
Having only had coffee here before I was a little daunted by some of the reviews but I finally tried the Mexican last week and was pleasantly surprised at how good it was. I was part of a large group (14 people) and everyone was satisfied with their food. My chicken tostada was tender and tasty. I must particularly mention the waitress who was one of the most courteous and professional I've ever encountered, especially at this price range.
She remembered everybody's order with none of that "who ordered the burrito?" nonsense. I also liked the corn chips which were more like those you get in the US than the highly flavored ones that tend to be used here. We had proper wine glasses too.
Well, I used to go when the Chilean couple owned it and I got take away the other day for the first time since they left and I must say it was really good!!! I was expecting it to be bad 'cause that's what usually happens when there's a change of hands, but I must say I was not disappointed. Being Latin American myself I was very happy with my food. Give them a go and don't get nasty!
