Best Yum Cha in Sydney. If you are unsure about the yum cha experience, do yourself a favour and make this place your first. The wait staff all speak English and are very polite. Can get busy but the ticketing system is great. Enjoy!
I went here once a month ago and was impressed with the food and the experience. The BBQ pork bun was tasty. All the dumplings are freshly made. On the Sat 12pm I went again with 3 other mates. Everything went perfectly normal except the food didn't come around much (probably we were sitting further inside) and when we asked for the bill.
When my friend passed the note to one of the ladies with the traditional Chinese dress, the lady was taking it in the way she was ready to rip it apart from my friend's hand rudely. With her frowned face, she didn't say anything and went to the cashier. We were so shocked that everybody including the cashier lady not far from our table could see our shocked faces. We were stunned. That was not the service everyone including myself knew about this place. Even worse, when we got our bill, this same lady threw the bill in front of our face.
We were again stunned as we were charged with 6 tea (another 2 friends joined our table just before we asked for the bills but they didn't drink tea nor touch the food at all). My mates and I thought it was fine to pay just a little much as we were satisfied with the food. But as we were annoyed with that lady's service, I asked for the staff. A lady in a tie came and asked me what happened. I explained how rude of one of the service ladies and how we were charged 6 teas while there were only 4 cups on the table. I even pointed her the rude lady. The 'staff' was kind of enough to review the bill and charged us with 4.
During the time the 'staff' went to rework the bill on cashier, the rude lady came to our table ready to take our money which was held by us as we knew what the re-worked bill would be. This lady did not even ask if she could take it. As she was ready to grab it, our emotional hands were ready to prevent her to. The staff came back with the new bill and we paid and guess what, the rude lady came to our table with the change.
I have to add, threw the change tray rather put. Again, we were stunned for 3 seconds there. In that 3 seconds, she thought we would not take the change, she again grabbed the tray with the full change. We were shocked with this. I had never experienced in my dining experiences where the waitress standing next to me ready to take the tip. At least, a little more subtle is appreciated.
We are still in shock as every other waitress were friendly and appreciative. All other waitress were saying 'thank you' on our way out. Too bad for a new place with such a good food. We were tipped off by one person with such service. We certainly will not go back.
If you are lucky and served by smiley waitress then you'll get a fine yum cha experience and leave happily. But that rude lady should be ashamed and China Grand should not afford losing their customers just by one grumpy rude waitress. I would assume if you were not pushing the trolley and you were responsible with the bills, you should know better of how to appreciate customers! We are very much disappointed.
Arrived here around 11 on a Sunday, place was pretty full got in straight away. Went because of the reviews on this site. I would say this is the best Yum Cha I have eaten. The service was great, can't use chopsticks they had cutlery for me within seconds, the trolley ladies were always smiling and even when hard to understand made a point of explaining dishes. Go there you won't be disappointed.
After hearing that the old restaurant here, Dragon Star Seafood had closed down and hearing the praise this new place was receiving, I had to check it out. The service is very impressive, i.e. ticket system outside, waiter will continually refill your tea even though it’s not be empty yet, cart ladies speak Chinese and English and are very friendly. The food was very appetising and after a very large and filling Yum Cha meal (tasty dumplings!!) the bill between 3 of us was about $38. Such great value!!! I'll be going back again.
Located on the top floor of the Market city complex China Grand has good yum cha and is very busy on a Sunday but the wait wasn't long - they have a ticket system at the door so there is no queue jumping. The spinach and prawn dumplings were particularly good as were the egg custard tarts. Not too expensive. Afterwards you can browse the factory outlets or get your fruit and veg from Paddys downstairs!
My God, I have been to yum cha but went here today and had the best experience. The food melted in your mouth and the ladies were so friendly, the service was fantastic, the best Mother's Day experience. The scallop dumplings melted in your mouth, the prawn dumplings divine, the mango pudding always a favourite. What an atmosphere, clean, fresh and delicious. Definitely a must and definitely will go again.
Went here on a jam packed Sunday for lunch, it had a great atmosphere, really buzzing and the trolley ladies were polite even though they couldn't speak very well, they always smiled. The value was great we ate so much. The food was hot and tasty. We will be going back.
Went to China Grand for yumcha on a Saturday. Busy, but not really full house. This is the old Kam Fook/Dragon Star. They have renovated the place, looks quite nice! Service really good all round, from the trolley ladies, to the floor staff... one of the best we have experienced in any yumcha places. Food, normal I guess, more than acceptable, though the "tau foo fa" (sweet bean curd) was sub-par.
Around $20 per person (11 items plus tea for 3).
Exceeded expectations. Went there early on Sunday morning, around 11 am. And didn’t have to wait for a table. It was nice to be shown to the table rather than just pointed inside and getting slightly lost. It was already quite busy and the food came out thick and fast. Good selection. The steamed dumplings were bulbous and the fish porridge was tasty.
The service was excellent. Everyone was so polite and appeared so grateful for every single dish ordered. The desserts came out in a timely manner. The mango pancakes weren’t bad. Overall the food was good but not exciting. The service was incredibly good. And when the bill came, it exceed expectations, it was so much cheaper than expected!
