Had a fantastic night at China Doll. We went there with our best friends to celebrate my wife's birthday. Everything was perfect. A great table, swift service and fantastic food.
Lets start with the drinks menu. If you like top quality cocktails you will not be disappointed. The rose and lemongrass martini was simply stunning. The wine list is also impressive and we soon located our favourite Grosset Polish Hill Riesling. We actually located three bottles of the aforesaid wine but hey it was a birthday bash!
We shared 5 starters and 4 main courses plus rice between the 4 of us and there was more than enough food. The Kingfish and Yellowfin Tuna Sashimi and Pork and Peanut San Choy Bao starters stood out as did the main courses of Crispy Pork Belly and the Duck Pancakes. We also had the steamed fish on the specials menu which was delicate, fragrant and cooked perfectly
We finished the meal with banana fritters and coconut ice cream for dessert (thank you China Doll for remembering it was my wife's birthday when I booked and sorting out the sparklers!). A fantastic night, we have already booked to go back for a pre Christmas dinner, not that we needed an excuse to go back!
A really delightful restaurant along the Woolloomooloo Wharf strip and a great choice if entertaining out-of-town or corporate guests.
In 4, we enjoyed a variety of the entrees and mains including the Peking duck, Penang Beef, Chilli Salt Squid and Pork Belly. The food was great and the service was pretty good, although for a busy Saturday night they all seemed extremely rushed and forgot a couple of wine orders so, perhaps, they need to re-think the number of wait staff required. I have also been here during a weeknight and it's much quieter and the service appeared better.
Went here with my boyfriend for our one year anniversary and the ambience was perfect. The service was excellent, being approached by 3 waiters while pondering what our meal would be and at the end of the night everything we ordered was delicious and exactly what we expected it to taste like.
Went here for dinner on my birthday on the weekend. Food was divine! we had 5 mains (portions are big so it's ideal to share) and 2 bottles of lovely SA wine, ordered scallops, flounder fish, penang curry, tempura chilli & lime prawns and steamed rice.
Waitstaff were super attentive and had excellent knowledge of all the dishes. Pricey but absolutely worth it. Great location - I'm sure it would be lovely in summer on the outside deck. A definite must!
Absolutely beautiful food, everything was a taste sensation, service was excellent and first class. The cocktails were sensational and food amazing. Worth every cent.
This is a great place if you're looking to impress business associates or out of town friends. Fantastic location and excellent food. An extensive wine list but you'll need to be prepared to ignore the right hand column...it can make you flinch. Serves are deceptively large so don't over order. Staff have an impressive knowldege of the menu and are mostly friendly.
I ate here midweek. We shared an entree of stuffed zuchini flowers. It was very nice. I think it was stuffed with enoki mushroom, crab and something else. It all went together beautifully. I had a salad for main, chicken and asparagus I think, first 8 mouthfuls nice, then pure glugginess. Not very creative. My husband had one of the days specials which was steamed sole.
It was nice, however, definitely not as fresh as expected. Nor was this dish a 'standout'. We also shared some fried rice which was average. I think that unless you get a seat outside, it is very average. The service was ok. I had sparkling H2o my other half had tap water cause he doesn't like sparkling and the waiter forgot and poured sparkling into his glass. Waiter was helpful, not quite genuine though.
Price wasn't too bad considering they would have high rent ($100). No reason for me to go back, however, I have a friend who loves the place.
Warning - do not order the banquet - it is too huge!!! Overall, generous and very tasty entrees - standout was the Hiramasa Kingfish & Yellowfin Tuna Sashimi with Blackened Chilli Dressing. Mains tended to be on the enormous side and definitely oilier - especially the pork belly and duck (I know they are fatty, but it was way more than expected). Also extremely & inexplicably oily were the Asian greens (?!).
High quality modern Chinese food at typically high Wollomooloo Wharf prices, but this restaurant excels at service and was packed on a freezing friday night when all the neigbouring restaurants were half full. Fairly decent wine list, but the cocktails were much better - recommended the Shangrila Slipper.
Lovely dessert platter - sorbets, sago pudding with passionfruit and Spiced Black Sticky Rice with Pineapple. Yum! Arrive hungry and bring your wallet. Would come again in a heartbeat.
Service - great (until the jibe)
Setting - fabulous
Entree of Trout and Kingfish sashimi - amazing. Chilli salt squid - average and too large a serving.
Main of Pork Belly, almost inedible. it was like eating lard, I know pork belly is fatty but we were advised this special contained half the regular fat. Not recommended!
Second Main - Drunken Beef with Brocollini and Snake Beans - Inedible. We could taste nothing but lemongrass to the point that we just couldn't eat it.
The waitress was kind enough to take it off the bill but couldn't resist the jibe "The Chef tasted it and couldn't taste any lemon grass'' cheeky thing! Pinot - Delicious
Dessert of Star Anaise and orange cake - average.
Overall a very expensive and overrated dinner! The only way I'd go back is if work was paying.
Went to China Doll for our Anniversary and was not disappointed. It was just lovely. Booked online and all worked well. Had cocktails at the place at the hotel next door which was lovely then had a fantastic Pinot with dinner. Had the squid which was awesome!, then the duck pancakes then the Panang curry. There was way too much food and we eat like 'normal' people!
Service was lovely, busy and bustling atmosphere but not too noisy. Highly recommend it for something a little different and a little special.
