We are very keen Indian food fans, and were excited to try a different Indian restaurant last night. The $27 banquet menu (possibly the "bronze" from the website, but it seems to be more expensive than advertised) was chosen, which consisted of a papadum, an onion bhaji and a seekh kebab each for entree, a lamb rogan josh, aloo matar and chicken korma for main with rice and naan.
Also supplied were mint raita, mango chutney and lime pickle. Of course the price was low and maybe this will seem harsh in the light of that, but the food was extremely bland, the sauces (especially the korma) were runny and lacked any aroma, one of the great things about Indian cuisine. Also the quantities were very poor, and the food was cold after a long wait for service.
Strangely all the food (especially the entrees, were under-seasoned, which is a heinous crime for an Indian chef (that is why you never see salt and pepper on Indian tables). As everyone in our large group was still hungry, we asked for some more. They happily supplied rice but later told me that we had unlimited rice, but no more mains would be served, as everyone was still very hungry I again asked for some more mains which eventually came (to accompany our now cold rice) which were quickly consumed by the group.
We didn't leave any food, but this was no reflection on how much we enjoyed the flavours. The décor, complete with flashing lights is strange but we wouldn’t have noticed if we didn’t have so much time waiting for service. The staff are very friendly and would be better served by a chef who makes the dishes fresh and authentically. Regrettably we would not recommend this restaurant to anyone who likes real Indian food.
With a name like Chilli Chimney I was a bit apprehensive of what to expect of this restaurant. Thought the mixed entree would be a good place to start, but was disappointed with the dry kebab and chicken tikka. The stuff up (!) naan was really nice, and the goan fish curry was fantastic.
However a classic like the Dal makhni was stuffed up with the dal being undercooked and watery. I wish they would switch off some of the brightly flashing lights, it ruins the atmosphere.
Having travelled through India and lived in East London, we consider ourselves curry connoiseurs. The Chilli Chimney doesn't disappoint. Great chicken tikka masala. Divine Palak Paneer. Dal Makhani is good too. Do a bargain thali for lunch. Lovely decor, great little cushioned seating for groups too. Had home delivery too which was superb. Abi and his wife Shivani are fantastic hosts, very willing to please by personalising dishes etc. By far the best Indian in Manly for all the above reasons.
I have been living in Manly for near 6 months and have eaten in many of its restaurants, this little place has by far the best indian food and is GREAT value for money! I'd recommend the fresh and aromatic dishes to anyone visiting Manly or looking for take-away. These guys deliver free for any order over $30, which will get you quite a bit of food delivered straight to your door. This place was great!!
My wife and I have eaten here heaps of time and it is always fresh and tasty and excellent value. The owner, Abbi, tries very hard to please and is a very pleasant guy to boot. He also doesn't mind experimenting with new dishes and if you ask him, he may even have something in train that you can try that has not yet reached the menu. Best Indian in Manly.
Been there twice now after having it recommended by a friend and I've got to say we haven't been disappointed. The food is lovely, ambience authentic and service prompt. They are always happy to see you and you always feel welcome. To explain the earlier comment, we spoke to the owner about it as we use eatability all the time and he said that comment was fair enough, they had a rough time initially and some dishes weren't up to scratch. His honesty was refreshing rather than blaming a 'grumpy customer'.
However, the quality has certainly improved since then and it really is a first rate restaurant with very reasonable prices. My new favourite Indian in Manly without a doubt.
Visited here for the first time on a Sunday evening and had a great meal. The service was excellent and we were made to feel welcome and were very well looked after. The food was excellent. As a pair of self confessed curry ologists we are picky about our curries and these did not disappoint, exactly the right amount of heat, ferocious for my partner and sensible for me, with great flavours even in the mild dishes. My personal recommendation for everyone to try regardless of whether you like it hot or not is the lamb cutlets, they were just delicious! Highly recommended.
