Overview
Cheng's On Fitzroy is a cosy, intimate restaurant that hits the spot in all the right places. Calling themselves Modern Chinese, you have classic dishes that have been twisted to create a unique and delightful taste that you can't find anywhere in Sydney. Some of the signature dishes include a mixed fried rice wrapped and steamed in lotus leaf, a sweet and sour pork delicately touched with a hint of strawberry, chicken wings stuffed with glutinous rice and also cold rice noodles with chicken, red vinegar and chilli. The restaurant is open for dinner only and has a stunning interior design that will make you feel right at home.
So, you are sitting at home looking on the internet at these reviews, like I was only a few hours ago, so you can treat your partner to a great treat tonight... here is a tip, skip this place. It's very, um, mediocre.
The value is not great, contrary to what other people have mentioned earlier or their idea of value is very diffeent to mine. When mains are nudging $30, entrees in the $12-15 range, you expect something to be perfect - nothing here is perfect. The food is not described well and the presentation is poor.
Tonight, we ordered soft shell crab San choy bou, roast duck, vege rice and dumpling. The bill was $70, or $80 if you include the required stop off at Maccas. The duck was not as hot as it should have been (not far off room temp) with the inluded 'salad' consisting of a marinated slither of cucumber. The soft crab entree was visually boring and tasted like, well, lettuce. Our dumplings were plain in taste, lacked any filling or taste (I am serious). Vegie rice was quite dry and tasted mostly of egg.
They must have a special deal with Macdonalds because they seem to smother everything in BBQ sause, probably straight from the sachet. The Chinese tea was nice, though overpriced $6. We did not hang around for dessert, though I imagined it would have been fried icecream, one scoop or two.
Having been a fan of the Pork Ribs at the SeaOracle the restaurant that used to be housed here I was keen to try Cheng's to see if the ribs lived on.
I asked to see if the owners were new and was assured the chef owners and decor were all new and there are no ties to the old Sea Oracle or the fantastic ribs.
The restaurant was half full on the Friday night we visited and we were allowed to choose our own table. The waiters were attentive and eager to please going as far as informing us to duck next door to the liquor store to get wine as they are BYO.
We ordered dumplings to start and they were fresh and presented in an interesting manner. My main concern was the size of the portion. Very small serving for a rather pricey dish. For mains we had the Chilli King Prawns which were not spicy at all and the size of the prawn had me debating it's King label. The prawns were not amazing so we were hoping for more from the crispy duck and once again we felt it was average and nothing more.
Certainly not worthy of the price tag or a return visit. The special fried rice was good but again the prawns were those tiny prawns that turn up in a cheap takeaway standard fried rice not a house special fried rice that costs nearly 20 dollars. Upon leaving the owner/head waiter came up and made us tell her that we would come back, which could be taken in good humour but certainly not after receiving a bill that was well over the 100 dollar mark for two people with no drinks.
Overall some nice ideas and nice sounding food but very pricey and to be honest I would prefer to spend the extra money on petrol driving to Ashfield for some Chinese food that leaves me full and happy.
This was our first visit but unlikely the last. The welcome was warm and the service excellent throughout - the chef even came out at the end of the meal to check that we had enjoyed the food.
We ordered two of the specials for entree - mongolian lamb pancakes and san choi bao (deep fried crab) and pork ribs and salt and pepper tofu for main. Every dish was delicious and a little different to the normal fare - one of the owners described the food as Chinese fusion.
The value was very good - bill worked out at $75. We live in Kirribilli and are delighted to have such a great restaurant on the doorstep.
Foodies unite! Finally Chinese cuisine with the innovation you've never dared to dream of before from a Chinese restaurant and a dedication to quality produce that is only equalled by the variety of flavours and ever-attentive wait staff. As a group of six people across a broad age range, we were richly rewarded by being able to order from all over the menu, with plenty of helpful advice from the Host on a good combination of dishes.
This is not the restaurant for you if you are looking for your typical Aussie-fied Chinese beef-in-black-bean and prawn crackers. We feasted on everything from scallops with Chinese funghi, crispy lamb, mini wantons in a sublime consomme and the duck pancakes were the best rendition we have tasted to date of this Chinese tradition.
Our evening was completed by the sweet dumplings for dessert which are beyond description, just make sure you have the white one first because the second dumpling will leave a lasting final impression.
Surprisingly it wasn't packed on the Thursday night we visited, but it has only been open for a couple of months so in time I'm sure a booking will be required for any night of the week, just like it is already on Friday and Saturday nights. A new entry on our top five list ...
We visited Cheng's last week after reading the reviews on here and we were definitely not disappointed. We arrived at 7pm and were the first in but there were a few more tables in by the time we left. All the food was fantastic, service was efficient and friendly, and we also had a visit from the chef which was a nice touch.
We're going back this Saturday night with friends so hopefully we'll have another great night.
A friend introduced me to this new restaurant. We were all very impressed by the food. Classic Chinese dishes with new taste, very unique and different, more importantly very yummy!! I personally like the crispy lamb with the dipping sauce, the lamb was very crispy and tender, together with the special dipping sause, very good matching. Thumbs up for their sesame sweet dumpling and Lychee sorbet. We also had some veges that was very fresh too.
A very warm and comfy environment, not squashy at all and they also have a balcony, will try to sit outside next time. Maybe some candles will make it more romantic. Service was very good too. The chef even came out and ask for feedback of the food. Overall, very impressed and will definitely back again.
Very enjoyable night at new restaurant. Dishes are very different, and well presented. The owners will bend over backwards to find out if they can improve on what they are doing. I had a beautiful crispy lamb dish, the freshest sweetest bokchoy, and some good salt and pepper tofu. Go before the crowd waiting outside stir crazy find out.
I went up the other night after reading about it's donations to World Vision on their Grand Opening night. Requested to sit on the balcony because it was a bit more intimate for my date and I. It was great because they have outdoor heating and the balcony is surrounded by plastic sheets to block the wild wind and rain. It was a very enjoyable evening with everything just right.
The food was interesting and nicely presented, the service wasn't invasive, and the atmosphere was relaxed. The chef also came around to every table at the end of the night, which I found to be a lovely gesture. The hosts are also very friendly and I urge people to give this new restaurant a go.
We live locally and visited Cheng's after reading about it in Good Living too. I am a fan of good chinese and I wasn't disappointed, everything was wonderful, very flavoursome and well thought out and presented.
It is BYO and there is a bottle shop conveniently located around the corner. We had the steamed dumplings to start, which had a divine sauce/dressing. For mains we had crispy salt and pepper tofu, which I personally think was better than my previous favourite salt and pepper tofu from Superbowl. We also had a fantastic boneless duck, with a nice crispy skin. It wasn't too oily and had a great black vinegar sauce.
This restaurant is only three weeks old, so don't be put off if there isn't many people around when you enter, they're still building up their client base. Try it and see, then spread the word!!
All in all, a great evening, the chef even came out and introduced himself and asked how we liked everything and was very humble and lovely. We'll be back!
What a surprise! Haven't been able to find another Chinese restaurant like this ever! Cheng's on Fitzroy, a modern Chinese restaurant I just discovered tonight at Kirribilli. We had boiled won ton as starter, absolutely delightful. Following with ling fish fillet with brown vinegar dressing (tonight's special), golden pumpkin (omg! I've never come across such a dish) and the lotus fried rice.
They were all very yummy! The dessert was a black sesame dumpling. The service was fantastic, the decor was stunning especially the effective lighting they had at the stairway. We will definitely be back!
