At Chedi Thai Restaurant we cater for large groups and functions or private dinners for two. Our seating plan can be arranged to suit parties or individuals and we are delighted to welcome family groups and kids of all ages to experience Thai food.
Elegant and sophisticated, Chedi is all about quality. With a menu that blends traditional Thai cuisine with modern fresh flavours; a carefully selected wine list that offers both value and taste; and a beautifully designed restaurant with impeccable table service, Chedi delivers a true fine dining experience well beyond its mid range price.
Carefully prepared, beautifully presented dishes of note include the Fish Soufflé Steamed in Banana Leaf and the succulent Musamun Beef Curry - the standard and the value of these dishes sets Chedi apart from the many Thai restaurants situated on busy King Street in Newtown.

Lately I've found Thai dining a real letdown; the food is either too sweet or just 'noodle-bar' quality. However, a visit to Chedi is enough to renew my love affair with Thai cuisine. We started off with a superb entree: Fish souffle steamed in banana leaves. I've never seen this dish anywhere else and it is a real must-have; in fact I didn't want to finish, it was so tasty! We then had the Green Chicken Curry, a well-loved classic, and at Chedi it was as good as any I've ever had. The Chicken with Chilli and Basil was delicious, and I'd also highly recommend the mussaman curry.
We indulged in dessert: gelato and great coffee (an usual thing at a Thai restaurant, in my experience). Nice ambience and decor, we enjoyed sitting in this pleasant environment. Greg, the owner, is a great host. Knows his food and wine, and is a funny bloke and a real raconteur! We felt very welcome, comfortable and relaxed; add to all that, superb food! Will definitely be back!!

I found the food quite nice and authentic, althought the portions smaller than surrounding Newtown Thai restaurants and more expensive. But it's clear that it's a Thai restaurant you'd visit when you're looking for a calmer (and romantic) place to visit. I found the owner a little annoying though, as he came up to us for a chat a couple of times in the night. While it's a nice gesture and creates a friendly atmosphere, I can't imagine that we'd return unless we could be bothered to face having a chat to him. Particularly as that night we were looking to have a quiet romantic night together. Good service though.

Back in the early 90's, I used to visit this restaurant every Friday. When the prices went up and the meal sizes became smaller, I then only went for special occasions. It was at this time that the restaurant changed hands, following the allergic reaction and lawsuit from a customer. The restaurant changed hands again approximately a year or so ago. The new owner, Greg, who is in the process of re-branding the restaurant, has maintained the exceptional quality and taste of the food and great service. For those persons who enjoy the flavours of Thai, this restaurant is a must. However, I would like to qualify this review, by noting that many mains are laced with chilli; if you're not a chilli fan, remember to ask for the dishes to be adjusted accordingly.

Great night out, not at all expensive, food was excellent with noticeably fresh ingredients. The service was very good with extremely reasonable prices for wine and mixed drinks, we loved it.

Party of 10 dined here on a busy Friday night - the service was faultless and they even kept the table for 45 minutes as we were very late. Lovely dark furniture and Asian ornaments add to the atmosphere - but OMG - the sitting on the floor nearly killed us! Leg cramps and numbness, as well as carrying a plastic bag with your shoes to the table really detracted from the whole experience. Even if we were among the lucky few tables that actually had chairs, the food was still a big disappointment.
Mixed entree was bland vegie whatever wrapped in pastry to form either spring roll or moneybag or triangle. Portions barely made it to bite-size (1 bite, not 2) and they are very stingy with the miniature bowl of dipping sauce. The fish cake was very rubbery in texture - maybe it was fish-flavoured tofu (shudder!). We had a mix of curries, Thai salad and noodle dishes that was really uninspired. The only memorable dish was the duck curry with lychees - great balance of sweet and spicy but the few shreds of dried up duck were pretty lonely swimming alone with only 2 lychees for company. This just about sums it up for our Thailand experience. Will go to my other Thai favourites (down the street) before I ever come here again.

I went to Thailand with a large party to celebrate a birthday and even though the restaurant was packed, the service was faultless in every detail. Make sure you order the massaman curry as it is exceptional. Highly recommended.

Although I was not encouraged by reading the menu displayed in the restaurant window, with offerings consisting of the norms "Thai green chicken curry" and "chicken and cashew nut stir fry", I was really very impressed with the quality of food. Brilliant fresh flavours, excellent ambience, good service except the staff are really good at interrupting converstion.

My first impression of Thailand was good. Spacious, prompt and polite service. The restaurant's claim to fame seems to be that you can sit on the floor while enjoying the food. This is perhaps more uncomfortable than it sounds. When wine was poured into our wine glasses, soap suds seems to come up on top of the wine. Not a good start to a meal. Mixed entree for $10 was extremely small with 4 pieces each able to be consumed in a mouthful. When the mains arrived, each was served in an entree sized plate. For $16 each, I would not have minded if the food was excellent. Unfortunately this was not the case. The duck with basil was made from a peking duck, probably left over in the morning. Skin was soft and fat, and the meat was dry. The sauce was peking duck sauce without any hint of basil. The charcoal pork was flavourless and stringy. In summary, disappointing food in uncomfortable surroundings.
