Overview
Situated in a sleek open space with exposed brick walls and wooden beams, dark and sleek lines and lofty mezzanine dining level overlooking the main floor. The front kitchen is bustling and opens for all to see and smell.
Yum. I can't wait to go back and try some more. A great mix of the more well known favourites such as green curry or mussaman curry, with a few not so well known dishes. I can't wait to try them all.
One of my favourite Thai restaurants in Sydney, favourite dish is Ship and Shore, delicious! Staff are friendly. Only recommendation is to book beforehand, they're always busy, even on a weekday!
Be prepared to wait! As soon as you arrive, get your name onto the waiting list, and be prepared to wait fifteen to twenty minutes for a table. Even when we left at 9.45 pm, there were crowds milling around outside.
Is it worth it? Yes! The food is absolutely amazing. We had crying tiger, pad thai, and a few other dishes. We also had the meat skewers, try one of each. For drinks, people on our table had the lychee drink, the strawberry drink and the watermelon drink, all incredibly delicious.
And for five of us, we only paid $100 for five dishes, two bowls of rice, and three drinks. Incredible value. I'll definitely go there again!
Chat Thai is awesome! Everything mentioned about excellent tasting food is true. I did not find anything too sweet, salty, oily or spicy. In relation to other complaints about the restaurant. To reduce the probability of anxiety and ensuing disappointment, take the following into account:
Book before going. Go in a small group at most. Drink a glass of wine (or two) before going to stay calm. Have no expectations of service whatsoever, I'm sure to make up for the cheap food they keep staff numbers (and costs) down. Go along with people you know (i.e this is not first date territory) so you don't feel like apologising for lack of service mentioned above.
Do not customise orders (i.e. "I'd like the curry without the ______." It just won't happen). Food will come when it is ready, not in the order you specify. Have plenty of time. There is also a chance you will be hurried along should you be there at peak time (but it always seems to be peak time, so...)
If you eat seafood, please do not leave the restaurant without ordering a whole fish. I shared the Snapper special with lime, cashews and galangal, and this was some of the tastiest fish I have eaten in any restaurant for quite a while. Chat Thai, I'll be back!
Definitely authentic raan ahaan Thai. Always busy, be prepared to wait for at least 15 minutes most nights. Once inside, service is impersonal but usually friendly and efficient. It can be very noisy, especially when there are groups, + tables are v close together.
Great for vegetarians, veg dishes are only $10. I go regularly for my cha yen fix (thai iced tea), it's pretty good but is pre-made. The som tum and green curry chicken are excellent.
It was busy. I understand a large group can throw things off in the kitchen and on the floor, but we had booked in advance the $25 per head banquet for a birthday.
The entrees arrived and there was not nearly enough for everyone. The vegetarian entree never arrived. When asked, the staff couldn't tell us what was in each dish. The mains arrived at various times and were demolished before the next one arrived. I missed out on some dishes because there just wasn't enough. The vegetarians missed out again.
The food was delicious. If there was more of it, our vegetarians were looked after and it came out on time it would have been a fantastic birthday dinner. For some reason we had to pay $32 per head which was a ripoff! I will definitely try the new Coogee Chat Thai, being a local, I'm sure a smaller group or a couple it would be fine.
Another favourite Thai restaurant. Spicy food is spicy (hot). The boat noodle is great, and fresh (if they still had it), paw paw salad is divine, just like in Thailand.
