Located opposite Capitol Theatre, the 'Thaitown' Chat Thai is another busy spot in Sydney's CBD where a swarm of people will be waiting outside for most hours of the day (it's another "take a ticket and wait" restaurant). They offer up a large selection of familiar Thai dishes at pretty cheap prices, and introduce a few that you won't find at your local Thai takeaway. Serving lunch, dinner and supper (open until 2am), Chat Thai is also a great place to visit as an alternative to Mickey D's or KFC after a night out.

Inside, the space itself is pretty small and very cramped, with tables separated by approximately 10cm on either side. Be prepared to listen to the conversations of those sitting directly next to you, and to share yours with them too. Overall Chat Thai is a solid takeaway option that is easy on the bank balance, but like Mamak, it's not really worth waiting in line for 30-60 minutes to eat in.

Just rating the food: Average Thai

Wanted to try this place because it was one of the few Chinatown area restaurants that made it into the Good Food Guide 2012. Ordered the Green Papaya Salad with dried shrimp, possibly this was the wrong selection. The dried shrimp were rock hard and almost inedible. The salad had a strong garlic aftertaste that remained in my mouth almost 24 hours later. Pity the colleagues of anyone who eats this at lunch and has a business meeting afterwards. Wow, so much garlic!

Also ordered the chicken satay which came with peanut sauce and was delicious.
This Thai food definitely has interesting flavours. They are doing a roaring trade with diners queuing up to get in even before 12 midday.

Poor customer service, asking for customisation of dishes was not allowed (ie, replacing chicken with beef and was specifically told that the chef could not do that, also asked for my dish to be mild instead of super chilly, waiter said spicy-ness levels could not be adjusted.

For the dessert menu, there was approximately 50 items to choose from and only 7 items were available. Very disappointed as I had heard great things about this place, Chat Thai is not as fantastic as everyone puts it out to be, just an ordinary place with mediocre food and prices.

Best thai restaurant in Sydney so far for me. Food always consistently good. But the service is just good. The place is bit cramp for me, considering not much space between each table. Overall, very nice restaurant.

A beautiful Thai restaurant in Thaitown. What amazes me is the fact that there is always a que of atleast 10 people waiting to get a seat at this awesome Thai restaurant. I have been to Thailand 3 times now and thanks to my Thai friends I have been to some of the best restaurants serving Thai food in Thailand. I have to say the food served at Chat Thai has to rank amongst them. Beautiful Thai food. They serve true blue authentic Thai food. Be it the Entreez, Stir Fryz, Curries, or the noodles.

The food is brilliant. I have been to Chat Thai more than 30 times and I think I have tried pretty much their entire menu. And I must say never once have I been disappointed. Food full of flavor, true asian herbs and simply delicious. Their portions are generous too.

The Wait Staff are not bad considering how busy the restaurant is at all times. The seating in the restaurant is a bit squashed up. Not a place recommended for a romantic dinner or a special occasion because its always full of people and can get extremely noisy. Perfect place with a bunch of friends or a family outing. Considering the quality of the dishes I think the menu is appropriately priced.

The only issue for me is having to que up which some times can go upto half an hour. But the true food lover that I am, I do not mind waiting I know that I will be served with some superb Thai food.

There are many thai restaurants in Thaitown. But the food served at Chat Thai is definitely is a notch higher. Highly Recommended.

What a great place to come. Been here a few times and the food and ambience is amazing. Their desserts are delicious and we love the different menus that they offer. Must tries for chilli lovers are, larb gai, dtom saap and the barbecue chicken. Yum. Also, go for their yakult ice blend. Delish.

Delicious food, however, we had to wait quite a while outside before we got seated. Nonetheless it was well worth the wait.

First timer here, nice interior walls but it is noisy, it's good 'western friendly' food and fresh. This is surely the best value fish cakes in Sydney,
even asked us if we need more rice - that's +++
