OzChinese: Winner No.1 Sydney Restaurant
The first Chat Thai restaurant, founded by Amy Chanta, opened its doors in 1989 on Liverpool St, Darlinghurst and was immediately a roaring success. Since then four more Chat Thai restaurants and takeaways have opened throughout Sydney. The name “Chat Thai” simply means “Thai Nation”. But the English meaning “to converse in a familliar and informal manner” is also what Chat Thai is all about: casual and relaxed dining with authentic Thai food made to be shared with friends and family.
Over the years our principle aims haven’t changed much - we still try to serve great, fresh and authentic food in an elegant, yet simple environment, and to also provide a helpful friendly service with excellent value for money.
Chat Thai is committed to excellence in Thai cuisine. We adhere to the strictest safety standards and are fully audited by Foodcheck.

This is my reliable Thai local and despite my patronage over the last 10 years, it occurred to me that I had never written a review.
The food here is an absolute delight if you're in the mood for something quick, cheap and tasty. For me, the standouts are:
- fresh spring rolls
- ginger fish
- massaman
- kana mu grob (pork belly and chinese kale) and
- sticky rice with custard
Thankfully, the menu also acquires additions somewhat regularly, which keeps the regulars interested. I'm currently in a gastronomical love affair with the kao soi (stewed chicken in a curry broth with noodles) and the goong opb woon sen (grilled king prawns with glass noodles).
I want to stress that there isn't anything pretentious about this place. You may need to wait for a seat, it's cramped during peak hour (from 6.30pm) and very occasionally you do have to remind them about your dish (if it's taking >20-25 minutes, ask!). Be that as it may, I always leave here full, with money left over in my wallet and I know the staff are always trying their best.

Hard to get a seat but well worth it if you can. A bit fast paced to pump the customers through but the food is great.

Authentic great food with prompt service. We had dinner and were served our meals within ten mins. The restaurant is tiny and very popular.

Surely this is the most overrated restaurant in Sydney's East?! And that's saying something.
Upon arrival my girlfriend and I were seated at the wall-end of one of those long communal tables and it soon became apparent that if you want any service at this 'restaurant' this is the last place you should sit. We ordered 2 entrées and 1 main and it took us 3 hours to get out of there. This is certainly not due to it being a fine dining experience, nor is it the cheap and cheerful, quick bite we were hoping for.
The 3 hours included 30 minutes before they took our order or even looked in our direction, an hour before they responded to our numerous requests for water, and when they eventually brought our main they failed to bring with it the essential rice we had ordered to accompany a curry. We waited patiently for about 10 minutes before making the first of our 4 requests for the supposed Thai staple.
Forty minutes later, when our curry was stone cold the rice finally arrived. This possibly only occurred because I eventually took it upon myself to disrupt and squeeze past the overcrowded rows of fellow dinners on my way up to the counter to demand it. Adding to our frustration during this 40 minutes we had watched the waitress we tried repeatedly to appeal to serve numerous other rice orders. What the?!
Needless to say, by that stage we were famished but sadly noticed that the people beside us had also ordered the Massaman curry and had left 4 large gristly chunks in their bowl. Mmmm, appetising.
Obviously, we had no intention of tipping after this frustrating experience but the rude and surly waiter took in upon himself to keep the change. I don't think so buddy!
Please do not bother with this place. They are clearly profiting from their captive audience in the middle of suburbia. Do yourself a favour and take the 10 or 15 minutes walk down to Coogee Bay Road or up somewhere else. To say this place disappoint is an understatement!

Extremely poor service, very rude waitress!
I had dinner with my friend tonight @ Chat Thai Randwick. We ordered a papaya salad, red curry chicken and Chargrill pork shoulder (no. 15 in the menu).
We expected the salad would come first. However, the red curry chicken arrived First! The curry sauce was excellent. The chicken in there tasted like cooked in salt water prior putting into the curry. There is a large room for improvement!
It took about 25 minutes for the salad to come. It is very unusual. The salad was tasteless except chilli sauce.
Another 10 minutes, another waitress put down a dish. It was chargrill squid! I asked that waitress Politely as we ordered chargrill pork shoulder. However, the waitress who helped us to take the order dashed to us saying that we did order chargrill Squid, no 51 on the menu and she had repeated the orders with us!
We did not argue any further but only asked for the menu to have a look again as we are sure we ordered no 15, chargrill pork shoulder. At the time she passed us the menu she still kept saying that we ordered no. 15 the squid. We then pointed out no.15: chargrill pork shoulder. That rude waitress just took away the wrong order. She did Not apologize or say a word to explain what was going to happen. Another 15 minutes, our pork shoulder came. To be honest, it was delicious.
We were really disappointed to the service, esp from that very rude waitress.
I got my doc. The server is SaiChon and the cashier is Kae. That rude gal took our order and sort out the bill for us.
Response from Management:
Dear Peter,
I emailed you regarding this incident on July 25, but you did not reply. Did you get my message?
In my email I said that I would like to thank you for bringing this problem to our attention. We place a positive customer experience as our highest priority and constantly review staff performance on a daily basis through live training, and on a weekly basis through after-hours training programs.
Nevertheless, sometimes things go wrong and when they do we try our best to put it right as quickly as possible. On this occasion we identified the staff member responsible for the incident and it has been dealt with internally. Her conduct was completely unacceptable and does not represent the standards that we train our staff to uphold. We trust that you have eaten satisfactory meals at Chat Thai in the past and we can assure you that we will continue to do our best to ensure that our standards do not drop from the level you are accustomed to.
Kind regards,
Chat Thai Team

I don't usually write after a bad experience at a restaurant but I felt I had to with this experience. After calling to try book a table and being told by a rude man on the phone to just come in. My friend and I went to chat Thai only to be told there was no seats he then found us a seat outside and told us he would move us in when a sea became available which he of course forgot to do. When we were ordering we ordered the lemon grass fish and some noodles we asked for some extra lemongrass and the man started yelling at us in front of everyone tapping the sign asking us if we knew were we where , then when we asked if the food could come out at the same time he flat out said no. Good food horrible service maybe only for take away from now on.
Response from Management:
Dear Marina,
Thank you for alerting us to this incident. This type of attitude from our staff is completely unacceptable and does not represent Chat Thai. We have worked hard over the past 25 years to create a warm and friendly atmosphere for all our customers so they can enjoy their food and their service. This is the key to our success and we will continue to work hard to produce that type of service for all our customers.
Wee identified the person responsible for this problem and they no longer work for us at Chat Thai.
Kind regards,
Chat Thai Team

Food was good, but I would have liked a bit more of a generous serve of duck in my main course. It was full of veg. But yes I would happily return.

While Chat Thai do some nice, slightly edgy dishes, the portions are a bit small and on the pricey side. My main issue with this place is frustrating inconsistency in service (possibly due to heaving activity out of such a small premise. Dining in can be very noisy and cramped (it was intended as a takeaway originally). The last two take away meals I have ordered have both been missing dishes, and the second time was over 30 mins later than specified for pick up. There is too much competition to put up with this inconsistency, especially on the thai front.

I love this place! I've been here 4 times already and so far I have not been disappointed. The food comes quickly and tastes really good too. My only problem with this place is that only half of the desserts ever seem to be available. Of the remaining desserts, however, the coconut ice cream is amazing!

Take away, rude on the phone, asked for little oil and the food was dripping with it. The food looks much better on the web than in real life, never again.
