This is the reincarnation of what was once the “Star of Thailand”. But not much has changed.

The best thing about this place is still the venue and location. It’s a roomy and airy place and pretty much wherever you sit you’ll have views onto the streetscape outside.

The carpeted interior makes for easy listening acoustics and I like the smart looking table settings with silver cutlery and crisp white napery. Tables are large enough to fit everything too, which is another plus.

Being on the busy corner of Penshurst Street and Vic Avenue it’s highly visible and easy to find. Whenever we dine in that area we are usually able to find a park in nearby Macmahon Street.

When we arrived at about 6.30pm on a Wed eve the place was empty. Obviously they weren’t expecting any early diners as they were still vacuuming! (It did fill up as the evening wore on so happily we weren’t the only diners for long: But being in such a prime position, it would be hard for this place to remain empty for long unless it was truly appalling!)

After seating us promptly, the polite waitress disappeared (possibly to supervise the cleaning) and then re-appeared about 10 minutes later to take our order. We ordered a couple of drinks, 2 starters – money bags and beef curry puffs – and two mains with rice. The money bags were a little too sweet for my taste but we enjoyed the beef curry puffs. Our mains were a lamb curry and a Pad Thai with chicken.

Both were pleasant enough: fresh and filling but nothing spectacular. For dessert we had a sticky rice and ice cream. I found the rice a little too sticky and hard! It was the kind of dish that you could break your teeth on if you’re not careful. We paid $75 for that lot: A bit on the expensive side for what is really average food.

Service though was swift and polite. Toilets are reasonably clean and well provisioned but a little too close to the kitchen for my liking (look the other way) and to access them you need to go through the dodgiest green door I’ve ever seen!

This isn’t the kind of place I’d be rushing back to unless a serious discount voucher finds its way into my inbox.

Chang Ton Thai is the best thai restaurants. In the restaurants it's has a big picture looks very nices. The service is very good and the food very yummy.

After they changed to Chang Ton thai, the quality has become much more mediocre. The service was not too bad, however, and this was even on a busy night.
