Cha for Tea is one of those places you go to just to have a nice quiet chat with few of your friends. I would not recommend ordering any of their hot food, it is tasteless and quite odd. True, they are known to make everything with a green tea flavour, but in my opinion some things should just be left with its natural flavour and not be made into this wierd concoction with green tea.
It would be best to choose a table outside where it is better aired with nice green trees surrounding the cafe area. The service is a little slow and on several occasions, the staff had forgotten what we ordered.
Good service and attitude, drinks are excellent. However the food needs improvement - dumplings seem to be the frozen ones straight from the Asian groceries further down the road. For the price they charge they should make a greater effort.
For the same reason, they should actually upgrade the seats' upholstery a bit- they are cream coloured with lots of black marks (not sure if they are shoe prints or dirty fingerprints) on them- it is a major turn off (together with the cigarette smoke blowing in from the courtyard) despite the nice ambience.
We were surprised by this place, which has a lovely courtyard full of pot plants, arranged so that you can have your food with an illusion of privacy. There's a huge range of teas and cold tea based drinks, plus an intriguing array of tea flavoured foods.
Though the tea flavoured noodle soup I had didn't taste noticably of tea, it was very good - rich pork broth, good noodles. The Taiwanese meat dumplings were bit of a disappointment as they came swamped in a thin sauce and were soggy rather than the crisper looking menu photo with thick looking sauce. Good range of Chinese teas on sale here too.
Something different, taiwanese cuisine in chatswood, most of the specialty dishes are flavoured with tea, it is quite subtle, bland compared to nearby Hong Kong style cafes but it should be healthier for you. The menu sets are the best value, you get tea jelly and a tea drink. Anything with pork mince is quite nice. Some nice vegetarian/tofu based selections for the omnivores.
The drinks are expensive but they sometimes use real fruit with a little syrup, not like the easyway type of teahouses which uses an all syrup base. Rear garden courtyard is ok but you will cop a lot of cigarette smoking teenagers after 4 pm together with the background asian pop music. Mosquitoes are a problem during summer as well. Best to dine during the offpeak meal periods for a relaxing meal and better service.
A great relaxed atmosphere with a good variety of tea choices, the drinks here are all very good and the service is also fairly good. The food is reasonably priced in comparison to the teas (which are quite expensive.) The outdoor sitting area gives a nice alternative to a cafe style setting. Overall an enjoyable experience everytime I have been there.
Food is great but can be a little bit oily. Dishes are decent sized and cheap. Hand made noodles with mince pork is highly recommended. The only disappointment kitchen ran out of rice by 8 pm, and couldn't deliver any rice dishes to us.
Specialty drinks appear overpriced. Waitresses are polite, but don't know the menu that well and have to refer to kitchen staff when queried about menu items. Outside courtyard, upstairs dining available.
If you've never been to a Taiwanese tea-house before, what the heck are you waiting for?? I'm happy to say Cha for Tea (aka Ten Ren's - the global franchise) is slowly becoming a Chatswood insitution. Go in the front door, the go straight out the back to this magical plant filled courtyard with glass tables. Talk about hanging gardens of Babylon! The menu is definitely one-of-a-kind IE: greenbean slurpee and tea flavoured noodles. Personally I stick to the bubble tea / QQ / tapioca drinks and the frozen slurries... I like this one called "Eternal Love" it's a citrus slush with two raspberry heart ice cubes on top!! woo-hoo!!
This is a good place to have some tea with friends for a long chat (esp: the outside area) but as a place for a meal, it is not recommended. The food is awful!!! but saying that the teas are quite nice. My recommendations are green milk tea with qq, hot taro milk tea and the chysanthemum and cinammon tea. The prices are a bit on the high side but if you want to relax and enjoy tea it's a good place (avoid times when the teenyboppers hang out, they are loud and distasteful and ruin the tea experience).
