The only real pub left in Sydney. Nice ambience with an edge of alternative lifestyle on display. Window seating provides not only an excellent view but a good sniff of Sydney traffic as well. A short walk to the famous Eros Cinema provides a full afternoons entertainment well into the night. Here's a a tip; if you bing on the condom machine in the men's room, you get free frangers. Jukebox play list has not been changed since 1992. One of Sydney's hidden treasures.
The Old Century Tavern was just an incredible Pub - right in the middle of the worst God awful back-packer and other various pseudo - trendy pubs.
Because the Century always stood tall but in the background you always had a sense of being a local whenever you made the pilgrimage up the stairs. In the old, old days there would very rarely be a doorman, the place would largely police itself - of course being a chosen Goth pub (Top Bar) meant that it was usually quite peaceful and I don't think I ever saw a Blue in there in 14 years of drinking attendance!
I first started going when I was working at a hotel on Oxford st - it was a perfect wind down place after work and especially on the nights off - you couldn't shoe-horn us out of there! Frequently we could fall out of the door at 6am on a wednesday morning and shuffle round the corner for a McMuffin and a large diet coke; then sit on the steps of Hoyts watching the early birds walk their way to work. We would sit and laugh for a bit then go home for shut eye and detox (about 8 hours or so.....)
The New Century was a shock to the system - I knew the management was planning something but as that revamp which so effectively cancelled out the best Pub in the west of the city. I still remember turning up at the century for a quick drink with a mate and seeing the closed 'til further notice sign and realised that the renovations, as threatened, were about to take place. I needed a hug. My mate dragged me round to the mighty critey and we d(r) owned our sorrows - of course the Critey is all gone now as well.
I was hugely satisfied when the new Bar Century fell flat on it's well coiffured face - thank God people didn't flock to it - I had one drink in there when it first opened and vowed to never return....Schmiddies in the Century!! Blasphemy! I think the main prblem for the new guys was that people still couldn't readily find the pub up the stairs and if they did, they would go into the pokie room and turn around and leave ASAP - thus never finding the pretenious, crappy bar upstairs.
I occasionally fantasise about buying back the lease and returninhg the Century to it's former glory - or best impression thereof - but it's not too hopeful. Pity.
Anyway, I have a couple of suggestions for a good fun drinking hole for former locals; check out:
The Macquarie Hotel - Good fun in the back bar and open late
The Clare Hotel on Broadway - Excellent place for a drink with real atmosphere but avoid saturday as it is dance night and the pool table gets turned into a dj booth(!!!!)
The Hollywood Hotel in Surry Hills - great little pub but oftened hired out for private parties
The Excelsior Hotel in Glebe - Live Music, cheapish drinks and great fun every night of the week(end)
Thanks for reading - i hope I found a few former Fans of the Irrepressible Century Tavern out there.
The Century Tavern was by far the last best standing pub in Sydney. Now that it is gone there is absolutley no point in visiting the city. And if you do have to go there, there is nowhere to ease the pain. Christmas time is the worst when there is nowhere to go for a beer to take the edge off. The bartenders were always welcoming and warm, the clientle was always varied, ecclectic and friendly. It was my favourite place to drink and i miss it dearly
The Century has been renovated (Jan/Feb 05), and completely butchered! Turning what was a great pub into another crappy pokie palace, with all the windows covered , on the first level (rule 1 in pokie handbook, but what an unbelievable waste of potential), and a yuppie haven on the second level. It's really sad to see a great character filled pub get the old yuppie stainless steel and polished wood treatment, it's a tragic loss! Still, I reckon all the punters should continue to go there and try to maintain the Century as that great pre or post Metro gig (or instead of, as has happened!) watering hole. RIP the Century
The Century is home...lighters and beernuts...so many trashy but enjoyable times. It is a gem in the corporate world of the CBD. There is always a friend waiting there for you. The charm of the place, and the charm of the bar men will have you coming back for shots and the delicious cosmopoliTOMS. There just isn't any place quite like the OLD century tavern.
This place is pretty fun on a week night. On the weekends is can get so packed that you can't even move! which would be pretty fun but people in the pub never seem approachable. It's fun and the steps are at an AMAZING incline. So when you are pissed and leaving it's like a game ;-)
