I dined here on a Monday night with two friends. We arrived without a reservation, but this was not a problem. We ordered a nice Margaret River sem sauv blance and some garlic foccaccia to start. All very nice. We then shared an antipasto plate which was most enjoyable. Lots of interesting goodies to sample.
We each ordered a pasta dish for our mains. I had the rigatoni boscailo and it was sensational. It seemed to have just the right combination (and quantity) of ingredients that made it interesting and moreish. My friends were equally as pleased with their choices, which were a rigatoni piccante and the vegetarian lasagne.
We shared a dessert, which was lovely. We also ordered a hot chocolate each (which was probably overkill, by this time we were terribly full). I couldn't drink all mine. It came laced with honey, which was a bit too quirky for my liking.
All in all, a very enjoyable dining experience. Not overly expensive, it came to $210 which equates to $70 per head.
I went to this restaurant with a group of friends and the service was absolutely shocking. The waiter was very unfriendly and the senior staff was so rude and hopeless. They should take care of the customers instead of insulting them if there is a problem! I’ve never had such a bad experience in Sydney and I go out for dinner regularly every week. And the food is really overpriced and below the expectations. I had the vegetarian lasagna and I could do it better (and I can’t cook!). I wouldn’t definitely go back.
Was not too happy with the meal ordered, I ordered the chicken and mushroom risotto, I think there may have been 5 pieces of chicken and the rest was mushrooms. Besides that the rest was all good.
We went to this restaurant for my sisters birthday, there was about 15 of us. It was so awful! I had pre booked and paid a deposit for the set menu so it should have been easy. The waitress didn't put all the orders through to the kitchen, and we were two plates short, the birthday girl being one of them! they finally bought the 2 missing meals out, 30 minutes after everyone else had finished eating.
The senior staff was so arrogant and I had to argue with him to get any sort of compensation (which was a miniscule discount off the bill which was over $500).
The wait staff were rude and hopeless, and that is 15 people they lost who could have been repeat customers had the experience been better. Do not waste your money here, there are so many other places on the wharf that are worth your while.
The food certainly smells and tastes great, but service is not. A couple of my friends ordered veal and steak. They asked for medium-well and well-done, but the meals came out medium-rare and medium, which I would have loved but some people are averse to pink meat. When one of them asked for her meal to be recooked, the waiter was very stroppy.
At the end of the meal, the bill was unceremoniously dropped on the table as the waiter whizzed by the table. The prices were also a bit on the high side at $60 a head for a piece of bruschetta, a main and a couple of glasses of wine each.
I don't know what the fuss about this place is. It's overpriced Italian food with so-so service. The dishes were boring and nothing really stood out. The waiter for our cocktail and mocktail orders mixed up and our coffee/hot chocolate orders. The pasta dishes were almost too bland. I expected a lot better. You are probably paying for the location. There are a lot better restaurants around.
With so many dining options to choose from along King St Wharf there is one reason I'd return to Casa di Nico: service. If you're served there by a tall, young man with curly brown hair, you're onto a winner. He knew his stuff. He didn't keep us waiting. He came back within reasonable time for our order when we weren't ready, twice. He discussed the specials and answered a question from our party about where beef cheeks actually come from without blinking an eye.
One of our party asked if she could pop her new pale grey handbag on a chair and pull it up to the table and he not only earnestly agreed, he recommended she check the chair first to make sure it wasn't wet, as it had been raining earlier in the afternoon. Several trips to the chef were made by this waiter to determine which dishes were safe for a garlic allergy. There was never any expression, attitude or tone to suggest that he found this painful or outside of scope. He was friendly, interested in his customers and interested in his work. My only disappointment is that I didn't ask his name so I could include it here.
The pizza chef was fun to watch, spinning the bread on his fingers like a Harlem Globetrotter with a basketball, above his head, flipped behind his back and the result was a delicious pizza base that you could eat from centre to crust.
And not bad value considering our table overlooked all of Darling Harbour: $70 total for 2 people sharing a pizza bread starter, a fig and bocconcini entree and a pizza main, with a glass of Italian red each.
Reading some of the reviews on this site, there is no pleasing some people ("watch out for 10% surcharge" ). Also the reviews are skewed - obvously all reviews aren't by customers. Watch out for ones that don't go into too much details - other than "great food!"
But take it from me - this is one of the best restaurants you will ever go to. My husband and I took our 3 yr and 7 month old here for lunch twice. The service was fantastic, the kids meal was $12.50 for the best cheese and tomato pizza you will ever get (what he didn't eat, we gladly finished) - and huge! plus drink and vanilla bean ice cream and topping. They gladly heated up my baby's food, and even stirred it for me and offered to clean the spoon after.
The dough is made fresh and tastes it too so soft we even ate the crusts. The pasta dishes we had were divine (lobster linguine for $39?? bargain! they weren't stingy with the lobster either), as was the wine. The final bill was $200 but who cares!! It was worth every cent, I have paid more than this and had much much worse.
My partner and I took a friend I hadn't seen in a while out for dinner. We arrived and were seated promptly, we were seated near the toilets in a dark corner, that was ok we could handle that. It took ages for the waitress to take our drink order but when she did the drinks were very quick.
Then it took ages for the waitress to come back for the food order, but that was ok cause the food didn't take long to come so that was cool too! The music was terrible!!! I love italian food and I'm used to that kind of music but it was slightly up too loud and was opera so it wasn't soo great. Food was great! For the 3 of us with 2 entrees, 3 mains, 2 desserts and 6 drinks (2 were cocktails) it was $190 not too bad at all!! We'll be back!!!!
