So nice to see a restaurant with a menu offering dishes that stand out from the humdrum of the usual suspects elsewhere on Norton St. The restaurant has a hip fitout, but happily this has not translated into pretentious food to match.
Orders were taken quickly but food delivery was, perhaps, a little slow considering there were few diners when I was there. The switched-on waitress, however, sensed the situation and kindly kept me informed on the progress of my dish without me needing to ask each time she walked past.
My pan-fried gnocchi with sage and braised rabbit and mushrooms is the sort of rustic Italian food I love, and was both filling and delicious. A few small bits of gristle and bone seemed to have slipped past whoever stripped the rabbit meat but a minor stumble nonetheless.
Prices are overall higher than other places on Norton St, but it's obvious from its looks and menu that the restaurant is aiming higher than say Bar Italia. Most importantly, quality squares up to match. Carpaccio is definitely one of the better restaurants on the strip.
We stopped in here on a spur of the moment choice and couldn't have been more pleased. They accommodated us outside with no hassle considering we came in quite late.
We started with the salmon and john dory carpaccio and the blue cheese stuffed mushrooms. Both were delicious and we could not fault the flavour or presentation. We could definitely have eaten more carpaccio as the flavours were so delicate and moreish.
We ordered the lamb and pasta de mare which was scrumptious. I have never had such perfectly cooked pasta (al dente) with a generous amount of seafood since Lygon Street Melbourne and the sauce was gorgeous. My partners lamb was cooked to perfection (rare) and the saffron mashed potatoes complemented beautifully.
We caved and had desserts as all the meals were so good and the crepes with berries did not disappoint. Overall the service and food was brilliant and such a nice surprise. The waiter went out of his way to explain all the dishes and wine and considering there were only 2 staff members, the service was great. Compliments to the chef and the restaurant , we will be back!
The salad I had here was delicious. Definitely my favourite. The pear was lovely with balsamic vinegar and there were plenty of walnuts amongst the rocket and fetta. I forget what pasta I had but it was also very good. Just the right amount of sauce and not overly tart. I love the water feature at the front!
We arrived here on a wet Sunday night after being caught in a downpour. It was warm as was the welcome. We started off with a couple of cocktails and the olives, brilliant. For mains we had the Linguine with Morton Bay Bugs and the Sausage and Black truffle sauce Pasta, both of which were the best we have had. The service throughout was just the best, attentive, friendly and informative. We finished with the cheese platter and a couple of glasses of Muscat and great coffee. We will be back.
Went there a couple of months ago on a very quiet Monday night and there was only one other table occupied. I ordered the duck & my friend ordered a steak. My duck was inedible, really awful and I did not eat very much of it at all. This went completely un-noticed by the waitress - although to be fair she was very friendly and efficient. The friend's steak was tough. I would not eat there again, there are much better places to eat in Sydney and for much better value.
Response from Management:
We were concerned by the poor experience that this diner had. Eatability helped to contact the diner with an offer of a free dinner for two but it was unfortunately rejected. We'd like to let other patrons know that we are constantly complimented for the quality of our meals and can assure you we use nothing but the freshest ingredients. In 12 months of operation we've not had one single complaint about the steaks or the duck and in fact am regularly complimented on them. Our steaks are from grain fed cattle and melt in the mouth or they are free!
Update: Not being great fans of Leichhhardt, we had our third meal here last week. It has improved since last visit with a more diverse menu, with better quality ingredients. The new chef had just started, which concerned me when I ordered a blue steak but it was cooked superbly and would be one of the best steaks I have had in a long time. A lot of it, I put down to the time that the staff have to work with your food when you go during the week, which are typically the less busy times.
Having tried a few places in Norton Street this would now be my pick, however I must stress I am not a regular here except for French in Marion Street.
Previous review: Went here on a Wednesday night and was impressed to no end. The service was attentive and very well focused. The wine list has a reasonable range of wines with good coverage. The menu had good diversity and offered all tastes a number of choices. I personally believe that going to Leichardt is best reserved for a week night as there are less crowds and less reason to be disappointed. This is a fine restaurant.
This is in a great location, and it's a beautiful restaurant. The service is reasonably attentive and there's a pretty good bar with a nice range of pre-dinner cocktails and quality spirits. The food is of a high standard, some nice pizzas which are great to share as entrees, great duck and some good pastas. Although the duck ravioli seems always to be unavailable, which is highly distressing!
Great food. I especially enjoyed the Zappaliogne coffee which was quite different. The atmosphere was nice especially when they started the live music. It is more a place you go for a special occasion though because of the price.
This place is quite simply fantastic!!! Have been here several times and have never been disappointed . Took my parents there last week for dinner and they were so impressed (my dad is a very hard man to please). The food and the service were great. Even on a Saturday night we were so well looked after and were greeted by the manager and staff, very friendly atmosphere.
I'm not too sure what some of the other critics are talking about. For four of us, we had three courses, including coffees and two bottles of wine and only paid $168 (just over 40 each, I think that's bloody good value for an awesome meal/night and awesome service. I certainly did not need anymore food.
Recommend all the pastas pretty much. I love the Gnocci with the edible parmesan basket and the duck ravioli. Don't forget the desserts. They have all sorts of cakes.
---- I just want to note that 'pollyglenn' obviously did not read the menu properly. It is actually 'Italian sausage with black truffle sauce' and it's great. If you want a cheap nasty meal there is always restaurants up the road. This place is the real deal Italian.
I have been to the cooking classes at the restaurant and shown how to make the sausage thats served with the pasta and the black truffle. If it was any fresher it would be walking! Its supposed to be served as a mince not as a whole sausage. That is a classic dish thats been around since my great grandmothers day. You do need to have some appreciation of what it is you are eating to truly enjoy it. I guess its the old story of the silk purse and the sows ear as far as polly is concerned.
