A great local! The bar is a bit old and dingy and the bar staff seem a little disinterested most of the time but the bistro is great! The meals are good value, tasty and relatively quick. Quite a few vegetarian options available and the burgers are fantastic. Try the haloumi and chickpea salad $14.50 Very yummy.
This is my local & I am wishing I could say better things about it. I have eaten and drank here extensively. Since the new management & food opened we have been a few times & it has got increasingly disappointing. Went last Sat after maybe 6 weeks since our last visit .
The bistro part was packed with kids & I mean every table, they had a section with kids toys & pictures on one wall of kids drawings. I mean what's the go ? They are obviously catering to this crowd now & it is not what I want in my local pub. It seems word has got out amongst the local parents & it has become the meeting place.
Anyway they weren't too noisy so no huge deal, what was a gauge deal was paying 23 bucks for a bit of pan friend snapper as big a a ciggie pack and some mash, I was shocked. The sheer size made me feel ripped off & it was down my hatch in less than 2 minutes flat. My partner had the pie & it seemed OK. If this was just a one off ok but we went there to eat after seeing a steady decline since the new management came in & we won't be eating there again, it's just not worth the $ & the eating ambience is all kids games & hoping no one has a tantrum.
The front bar is still a great bar but better for day drinking. The staff are mediocre, I shouldn't have to ask for a bucket after I buy a bottle of wine & pay the premium for drinking it with dinner. The waiters also seemed in a bit of a daze & walked around with plates trying to catch the eye of the person whose food it might be.
Overall pretty disappointing & it could be so much better as this is a great little pub, just needs to work out what it's doing. I recall the first time I ate after the new food came in & I was approached by the staff & asked my opinion, long gone are those days.
A pleasure to do this review. I had heard that new management (from Oscillate Wildly & Codfather) had taken over the running of this place and I was keen to try it again after the previous disaster. It really hit the mark, busy on a Friday evening with many families making for a casual (loud) atmosphere.
Food as a-one, pub food. All 8 of us were happy with our fare. Service has come up a few notches too, all this while being busy too. Value is first class. Well done to them, another great option in the inner west.
Food seems to be very hit and miss, my husband had lunch here and said salt and pepper squid was fab. Then we came for dinner and its awful, prawn linguini had five tiny shrimpy prawns and not very much pasta and my friends fish and chips was disappointing.
Had possible the worst pub meal of my life here, fried gnocchi literally swimming in about a cup of oil, totally inedible, the staff quite rude when I asked if I could change it for something else.... after much deliberation in the kitchen eventually one staff member replated it to get rid of the pool of oil... this took about 20 minutes. I used to come to this place all the time and the food was fab, not sure where and when it all went wrong, such a shame as it is a really lovely pub.
Unbelievable! Food was of restaurant standards at pub prices. This has to be the best kept secret in Newtown, if the restaurants on King street were ever to find out about the Carlisle Castle, they would surely band together to shut the place down. I believe everyone needs to know about this place and rate it for yourselves.
Great pub food. The portions are big and the menu is varied. A really nice place if you want to go to a relaxing pub to have a few beers and a good pub meal. No nonsense and good value.
Went here for the first time yesterday. Friends remarked they'd been there and were impressed with the food from the new chef. Well, that was news to me as I didn't even know they had food here! Glad we went - usual pub-grub menu but seems the new chef has added a touch of his own skills. Had the pork fillet with sweet potatoes (kumera?). Yummo! Husband had the gourmet version of bangers and mash. Verdict, delicious all round.
A great little pub, been going there for years. Unfortunately, the new management are not as friendly as the old team but the good news is the kitchen hasn't changed staff!! Best steaks in Sydney bar.
