The new lease holders of the captain cook Hotel Bistro have really made the place look and feel great. Their bar meal prices are very cheap and if you waited something more upper market their main meal menu just suits a real Aussie Pub. Good on you Guys keep up the good work.
This place is a regular due to being a short walk and great value, however, the food and service is so inconsistent it can either be a fantastic dining experience or a complete disaster. They seem to have a lot of changes of staff in the kitchen. Overall its definitely worth a try as its only $8 for a steak and sides so its no great loss if you pick the wrong time to go.
This place is great if you'r looking for a healthy meal (steak, veg & salad) at a great price. There were times when the steak was tough, and was either overdone or underdone (rarely cooked the way I liked it being medium-well) but all in all it wasn't inedible. I think there was a change of cooks that was the cause for that problem. This place is great for the uni student, backpackers and those who like value for their dollar. I never left hungry or unsatisfied.
You can get a decent-sized steak here with chips and vegetables for $7 any night of the week. So the price is right but somehow - and I've dined here a few times -I've always found the meat to be a bit on the tough side. Sure, I like my steaks well done but that's no reason for it to taste like dried out leather! Had better luck with the $7 pastas on a Wednesday night. Service isn't a problem and we've never had to wait long for our meals but then we tend to go around 6.00-6.30pm on a weeknight before it gets too busy. The ambience is pleasant and it can be quite cosy on a cold winter night. The wobbly tables though, need a bit of attention! Getting there ain't a problem. The 373 or 377 buses stop close by. Parking is quite easy in Moore Park Rd or around the corner in Paddington but I guess I'd avoid it on a big sports night!
I have been bringing my wife here for years, it really is a fine example of gastronomic excellence. Only the Coogee & Randwick RSL is close to this kind of no nonsense pub grub.
The staff were friendly (maybe there has been an attitude adjustment given the feedback below), decore was simple, ambiance was good and the food is certainly value for money.
How bad is the service in this place! I was greeted by a little stocky angry waitress who all but sneered her contempt at having to serve people. Cheap meal but unless you want it served with sarcasm and spite, best to go to the Forresters or any one of the many pubs around and have an enjoyable experience. Shame really.
$7 steaks with mash and salad are great value and really tasty, my plate is always empty. Have been there on busy Trivia nights and have no complaints with service. Andrew behind the bar is really nice and friendly. I'm surprised about the negative comments about staff.
