The number of Hungarian restaurants in Sydney can be counted on 2 fingers. So my real issue with this recently opened café was, perhaps I was expecting too much. The owners are lovely people and extremely friendly. But it was a surprise to walk into a restaurant in Norton Street on a Friday night and be the only patrons. Not a good sign. And be warned, no BYO, a serious mistake for any restaurant.
The entrée’s were the high point. I started with the langos, a deep fried yeast bread, like a savoury donut on which you rub minced garlic @ $6.50. My lady had the pancakes filled with feta cheese @ $7. I had to try the cabbage rolls @ $18 so I ordered a medium to be shared by both of us. Just didn’t taste right, there was none of that lift in taste from the sauerkraut and there was no delicate balance between the bacon and paprika, just an overbearing taste of paprika.
Somehow the order for the mains got stuffed up so we only got 1 plate. I ordered a medium ($18) and a large ($25) schnitzel, and only got the large. What a lucky mishap the meat was awful, the mountain of thick cut chips inappropriate as was the ‘salad’ of sliced lettuce and tomatoes. You can get better schnitzel, chips and salad at most RSL or leagues clubs. If you want authentic and tasty, try Corner 75 in Randwick.
This restaurant in the heart of Norton Street conveniently has its own parking lot !! Received a very friendly welcome from the owner Joe. Food took a while to arrive, but once it did, I absolutely drooled at the authentic Hungarian cuisine.
From starter through to dessert, it was all utterly delicious. I recommend their home-made cakes; my girlfriend and I tucked into a single piece of zserbo (layered pastry with nuts, chocolate and jam ). Delightful. Thoroughly recommend it.
