We've been to Cafe Steyne a few times years ago and it was OK, but our experience there yesterday certainly was not acceptable. We asked for a bottle of (tap) water. The waitress bought us three classes that looked dirty - mine was filthy and had a lump of gunk stuck to the side. She took it away but came back with the same glass and told me in a very surly way that the glass was scratched (the gunk had disappeared, who knows how). Then we poured the water - it smelled liked a dirty fish tank.
We had an old friend with us so I didn't want to make a scene but he was worried about the water. The food was lousy and overpriced. I ended up having to drink the water because I was so thirsty thanks to the salt they'd put on the chips that (I hadn't asked for salt - why do places do that?). There were pigeons walking around the floor of the restaurant but the wait staff weren't doing anything about them. We both woke up during the night feeling off and with bad headaches - we couldn't put this down to anything other than the water from this place.
My advice - don't go to Cafe Steyne. It’s like all the other restaurants along to the Steyne that rely on the location but don't make an effort to provide good service. How dare they treat us like that and disrespect our health. That waitress should have apologised and got a new glass that wasn't scratched. And why do they have glasses that are that badly scratched anyway? Also, the place was dirty. It would be a good candidate for Gordon Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares.
Good value, good food, generous portions, great spot. Very slow and surly service. Impossible to get their attention, they forgot orders and never cracked a smile. The tomato sauce (served in diner style clear squirt bottles - one per table) was watery, which is neither here not there, but did annoy me!
Have been here several times, and sadly won't be returning. Not sure if they've had some staff turnover, but, the quality of food and service has declined. On two separate visits our coffee has been burnt, poached eggs more like hard boiled, and service quite slow. Time to move on.
I went here for 3 years straight, moved away and returned to find it the same as when i left!! best toasted banana bread and mocha i have ever had...staff very friendly...ENJOY!!
Well what a pleasant suprise. I have not been in the cafe for 3 years due to returning to UK but it has not lost that special feeling of home. Always made to feel welcome and the food was nice, big portions and full of flavour. Staff can't do enough for you and last but not least, the view WooW say no more.
This cafe is the most digusting one I have ever been to. I personally witnessed my wrap being dropped on the floor by one of the cooks who simply brush it down and replaced it on the plate ready to be serve. I complain to one of the waitress and she assured me that a new one would be made. Within two minutes she came back with a wrap saying that it belonged to another customer and decided to give it to me first. We sat there for another 30 minutes and no other customer was served a wrap. We had to pay full price for this meal and no apology was made. To top it off my sister's pancakes was under cooked as well.
