How this restaurant remains open given the level of quality from other restaurants in and around Darlinghurst area is beyond me. This would have to be the worst meal I've had in quite some time and for the price an absolute rip off. You've been warned. Disappointing ! The other 'good' reviewers must have shares in this restaurant. The only good thing was the baguette.
Spent Bastille Day at Sel Et Poivre and all I can say is Vive La France! This place is a little gem right tucked away in Darlinghurst and is truly worth a visit. The food may not be the best French cuisine in Sydney but it is simple, honest and rustic.
We began our gastronomic journey with a glass of Kir Royale & a basket of warm, fresh bread and butter to take the edge off our hunger which was followed by my roasted goats cheese salad and my husband's duck terrine - both were absolutely scrumptious. We ordered a bottle of wine, joined in a chorus of La Marseillaise before being greeted by our super friendly waiter serving our mains. These comprised of a bunny casserole (so soft and tender - just divine) and a steak with blue cheese & fries on the side. My knife cut through both with great ease and the wholesome flavours just danced on your tongue... YUM!
As dessert was part of the set menu we finished off with tart tartin and profiteroles and a coffee. Both were equally as good and a perfect size after our main.
All in all our evening here was one of the best in Sydney as the food, staff and ambience made this a thoroughly enjoyable, yummy experience. Can't wait to go back,
Stumbled upon this with a friend on a Friday night. The place was bustling but managed to seat us within 5 minutes. Loved the dim lights and the overall ambience. We had escargots for starters which did not blow us away but the mains were divine!!
My friend had a chicken dish and it was deliciously tender to the bite and I had duck confit which tasted like heaven. Although the portion looked small, I was terribly stuffed after my main. Will definitely come back again for the good value and to try the desserts!!
Great French cafe in Sydney, more so for dinner than lunch. I was in a great rush last night, got dinner here with a friend. The place is always filled to the brim on a Friday night and we waited about 20 minutes without reservations, but staff were kind to offer two glasses of complimentary champagne.
Once seated, it was quite difficult to get orders taken as it wasn't very well staffed and all wait staff were very busy and weren't most polite. I only tried the mains tonight. The beef cheeks ($24.95) are the most highly recommended item on the menu. The cab sav sauce was brilliant and went well with the frites, I would have preferred beef tenderloins/fillets as opposed to the beef cheeks which have more of a brisket like texture.
The other dish tried was the chicken ($22.50) in a cream based sauce, not too heavy/rich, while it is comparable to chicken dishes offered at other French restaurants, it was inferior against the beef cheeks.
Pricing against portion size is very good here. I will come again without a doubt, maybe not on a busy Friday night, despite the lacking service. (I have been here for lunch many times before, above average cafe fare, baguettes, approx $8-10 and salads, approx $12-15, are lovely and come loaded with brie cheese).
I love the relaxed atmosphere here, which for a French Cafe in Sydney is rare.
Service here is excellent, both friendly & efficient. Food is the real deal French, great quality and fantastic value.
Wonderful serivce, exceptional food, and quaint decor. Our group of four ate here last night and we were all very impressed. The cuisine and service could not have been surpassed.
Being french I can tell you this is a typical bistrot, french style, not pretentious, just basic cuisine that's simply delicious. I love the cosy interior which reminds me of a typical french cafe, and from the moment I am entering the premises I feel like home! Great choice of french wines! (try a red "cote du rhone" with a "confit de canard" et voila! This is where I go when I miss my food.
