I've been coming here for years. It's top value, especially for lunch and brekkie, and I keep coming back for the $7 lunch special, especially vegie lasagne on Tuesdays, and the veal parmigiana on Fridays (spag with meatballs also good). Sweet treats also excellent value. My work place also uses the catering regularly, so I can attest to the quality of the food and efficiency of the service.
This is located right near Kopystop, so I'm sure they get a fair slice, you know, of the Kopying Krowd. No-one can deny that this place is good value. Very cheap lunch options, and specially geared to students, offering a free drink. However, while it's regrettable and thoroughly inelegant to resort to a cliche, the age-old adage you get what you pay for is perhaps apt.
The food is by no means inedible, but it's also not spectacular and I'd much rather get something a little bit better for a few dollars more. A fistful of dollars can go a long way, stomach-wise. I had the char-grilled vegetable salad. There was far too much fetta, which was not marinated or flavoured in any way (this is by no means a fatal flaw but would have made the copious amounts of the stuff more bearable).
Moreover, the vegetables were cold, which was a bit surprising given they were billed as char-grilled, and suggests, of course, that they were not freshly prepared. And beyond that, they're much nicer warmer. The kumera in the salad was particularly problematic, as it was not roasted, or at least not very well, so was quite hard. Also, the distribution of the balsamic dressing was quite uneven. By no means a terrible meal, and at the price I guess it was pretty good value, but could easily have been a great deal better.
Service was a little slow at getting what seemed to be three relatively simple meals all out at once, and accuracy with fork and knife placement was a little poor! Moreover, they failed to heed my perfect company's request for no avocado in her meal, even though she had already had to settle for a croissant rather than the prescribed bagel! Considering avocado at best a wholly unnecessary and unwelcome addition to any dish, and at worst one of the wickedest scourges of our culinary landscape, I would really have been rather livid, but she was far too gracious to make a fuss.
Pleasant, friendly staff, good service, nice atmosphere. Most menu items below $10 with a good range of choices. I have breakfast here at least once a week and would recommend the light breakfast. Lunch special is now $7 but still represents outstanding value. Fantastic smooth coffee. Also some low fat and gluten free menu choices.
I eat lunch at this cafe several times per month. It's a nice place. A good range of menu items, with the most expensive options about $10-$15, and a set daily special lunch for $6.00. Steak sandwich with fries is yummy, as is the chicken in pajamas (chicken parmigana!) for $6 on Fridays and the bangers and mash for $6 on Thursdays. Nice and cosy, never too crowded, service is polite, prompt and hassle free. Nice place.
