Booked dinner Friday night, simple food, the goats cheese salas was the best entree, lamb shanks very bland, wild mushroom risotto not much flavour. The only excellent part of the meal was the dessert, excellent panna cotta and delclious creme brulee.
Service was OK, will try again but I will wait for a different menu.
This was possibly my worst breakfast experience in Sydney! The website link on this page is a complete farce! What looks like a fine dining experience is an absolute shambles.
My partner and I went for breakfast on the weekend, and I ordered what sounded like a superb dish: potato pancakes with prosciutto. Unfortunately I received what appeared to be pancakes that had been unable to be flipped properly, and resembled hardened chunky scrambled eggs, topped off with bacon and not prosciutto! When I questioned the dish I was met with a condescending 'darling, it's mashed potato pancakes'. This should not be reflective of the consistency of the pancakes though! Also, while the chef agreed that 'yes, that is bacon' when I asked if it was supposed to be prosciutto he asked how he should know and it was up to the waiter to tell me that yes, it was meant to be prosciutto.
My partner's big breakfast was bland bland bland. I have never reviewed a restaurant before, but I walked away from that cafe knowing that I would come on this site and warn as many people as possible not to waste their money!
It is such a shame when a cafe can't maintain its standards. We went to cafe Niki for dinner about 1 month ago. It was quite a surprise..the bistro type food had been replaced by perfectly cooked Mod Oz cuisine. The wait staff were laid back yet wonderfully efficient. We had the best meal and were surprised at the low cost of such a good meal.
So happy were we, we decided to go back with friends. Unfortunately, this time, the whole evening was a fiasco spoilt by a waiter who was so " in your face" that it was quite uncomfortable and whose English was quite challenged by the blackboard menu, which he insisted on reading aloud to us in its entirety.
The entrees were undistinguished but uneventful. The mains were a disaster area. I was brought the completely wrong chicken dish - even though I had even pointed to it on the menu when he seemed to have some difficulty with my request. I sent it back. My husband's veal dish was badly cooked and the accompaniments were not as shown on the menu ( they eventually didn't charge us for this). Our friend's tuna was dried out and served on a risotto that was tasteless. The fourth main, a steak dish, was OK.
My corrected dish finally reappeared. It was the same main that I had eaten on my first time there. Then it had been a perfectly grilled chicken breast beautifully arranged with superbly prepared vegetables and salad. This time it came with some ghastly creamy sauce and overcooked vegetables. We decided to give up while the going was good and did not choose to stay around for desserts or coffee.
It was such a disappointment. especially since we are locals and have been going to Cafe Niki for coffees and lunch for many years. I don't understand how an initiative to create another great dining experience in Surry Hills could have fallen so flat after such a short time. What a shame.
A note to those people looking to use the Entertainment Book card at Café Niki. We were told we couldn't use the Entertainment Card for breakfast or lunch and that we should go home and check the book. I in fact did this and there is nothing stated in the book or the Cafe Niki page that states the promotion can't be used for breakfast or lunch.
This was disappointing as we specially drove over the Surry Hills to dine at Cafe Niki. I called the cafe later that day to advise them the book mentions nothing about the "buy one main get one free" special not being available for breakfast or lunch. They weren't interested. Very disappointing. They won't be seeing my dinner business now!
I have been to Cafe Niki a few times now and every time I am more impressed. The food is delicious, the ambience is gorgeous, the staff are so friendly and the prices are so affordable. Their wonderful chef whipped up an extraordinary vegetarian option for me, and was so willing to be flexible and creative which is much appreciated. We both loved our meals and couldn't believe how cheap it was when the bill came. We'll definitely be back.
I second Captain Tofu's opinion. And whilst I always have time to ride Captain Tofu's sail, I will still throw an anchor Niki's way. I've been in a long term relationship with Niki for a while now. She was my neighbour for a few years and like any girl next door. Her poached eggs and oversized coffees have gotten me through many hangovers. Like any long term relationship, you can forgive a myriad of wrong doings for the sake of the relationship. I will continue to visit Niki with or without Captain Tofu.
One would think that a simple Sunday morning breakfast at the local would be charming and uneventful. Sadly no, the smiling assassin who served us thwarted our food choices at every turn. We were not allowed to mix and match side orders for the full breakfast, nor were we allowed having a small fruit salad, "it's full serving or nothing we were told". We got the wrong water and the wrong toast and my favourite, butter for my muesli... mmm tasty! When our waitress jokingly said, "I am the food Nazi," we felt like goose-stepping out of the restaurant, but alas the weather was inclement and we stayed.
To the staff - as paying customers, you need to give us what we want. At the end of the day, there are plenty of other restaurants who will and your inflexible and dictatorial service ensured Captain Tofu will hoist up his main sail and move into more inviting waters. The food was OK, but really drops the attitude already!
Have been here several times for breakfast and dinner and each time gets a little more disappointing. On my last visit, I had the bacon and cheese pie which was bland and flavourless and I haven't been back since. Service is friendly enough.
I found cafe Niki by accident having tried to get into El Baretto but failing. Glad I didn't. The food was amazing and I had one of the best steaks I have ever tasted! Try the white chocolate dessert too, it's to die for! The actual restaurant isn't as fancy as some of the Surrey Hills spots but still has a great laid back vibe! I would definitely recommend!
