An extraordinary good place to have a dinner. I found the staff are welcoming and very helpful. You should try the chicken primavera. I would recommend to you.
A wonderful place for an afternoon drink on a balmy summer's afternoon. The outdoor setting is just perfect for this. Staff were incredibly attentive and eager to please. Try their warm marinated olives. An absolute delight.
Cafe Otto used to be a favourite amongst me and my friends but recently their service and quality of food has gone down tremendously, and with so many other and cheaper options available on Glebe Pt Road I would not recommend you eat here.
It took 15 minutes just to get served, and even then the girl forgot our table water. Our food took over 30 minutes to arrive. Both my friends ordered burgers which came out rare, and when we questioned the wait staff about this we were told that "if we wanted our burgers done well, we should have asked when ordering" which is just audacious considering a burger should always be prepared medium! And the amount of chips they were served was laughable, wouldn't even pass as a handful!
When the table water finally did arrive, the glasses were filthy. The food was overpriced for what you got and I really regretted not deciding to eat down the road instead!
Visited Cafe Otto for a Monday lunch a few weeks ago. Although prices were a bit high and service was a bit slower than expected for a quiet Monday lunch time, the food was delicious and had generous servings. The marsbar cheesecake is the best I have ever tried, nothing but taste in every mouthful! I would like to return here although I wish I was a student as they receive 20% off the bill, that would make their pricing a little more competitive.
I frequent Otto but have my own rule, I will not go there on a weekend. So many times I have had excellent experiences with bright young waitstaff on weekday mornings and evenings when the place is relatively quiet, but after giving it 3 chances on a saturday I just can't do it anymore. Glebe gets ridiculously busy on that day with the markets, so why on earth are there no (or not enough) extra people working the floor?!
I have waited 10, 15 minutes for first contact with a waiter, had to collect my own drinks from the bar, and on one unfortunate occasion not been approached by staff at all. (I gave it 25 minutes.) Otto has a great position and atmosphere, with the rustic feel and the fireplace, along with rain covers and heating outside so you can still sit there even when it pours.
If only they could get their act together when it comes to busy times. The food is expensive compared with other cafes in glebe and doesn't seem worth it when you often receive less than professional service. I have noticed on these times that the staff are polite and running around but simply unable to meet the demand, why is the girl behind the bar also running the drinks out?
On a saturday in glebe when the orders must be coming in incessantly? It appears there is something wrong with the organisation of the place and I feel for the staff struggling to work under so much pressure. Having said that, when it is good it is fairly good, I love the eggs benedict and pancakes and order these often-if there is a waitperson available.
The kitchen "forgot" my order and staff was least apologetic about making me wait to be served while everyone else on the table finished their meal. They offered to "not charge me for coffee" pretending it was extremely generous of them to offer this as compensation for me going without lunch! Am never going back for sure.
Wandered into Ottos off the street a little while ago, having not been there for a couple of years. Just like it was before, a pretty good eatery. Nothing to flash, good staples really. Will drop in again.
My partner suggested Otto's as we walked past (4 of us). I thought we had eaten there before and couldn't remember why, but was sure we didn't enjoy it. I was assured I was wrong. Got the menu and it looked a little pricey for some things, service was very good, then the food came out and I remembered we had been here before and why I didn't like it. Absolutely the worst food served in the smallest portions at the highest prices.
I had the Nachos which was really a dipping bowl and a scattering of corn chips, for which they were asking $17+. Then my partner was served the Gnocchi Gorgonzola, count them, 12 whole Gnocchi for $19. The best was the Shepherds Pie that came in a tiny bowl with some veggies on the side (frozen not fresh), $25.
I sent mine back and refused to pay. Others were unimpressed to say the least. The staff were very helpful but couldn't do much. Keep walking along Glebe Rd, there is better fare to be had.
